- Known as one of the top machinist apprenticeship programs in the state, Engineering’s Apprentice program teaches entry-level machinists the technical skills and provides the safety training they need to be certified machinists at LLNL and in the State of California.
During the program, participants learn advanced manufacturing techniques from highly-skilled veteran machinists and former machinist apprentice graduates. Giving guidance and instruction to the next generation is a strong tradition in the machinist trade.
The Machinist Apprentice Program began in the 1950s, and has a long history of providing education and training in the machine tool trade. The four-year Machinist Apprenticeship Program is very selective -- typically hiring two out of 100-plus applicants.
Selected candidates are provided with a mentor in every shop and required to complete eight 1,000-hour training periods. If they're able to show mastery of all training and education objectives, they are rewarded with a state-certified machinist certificate.

Knowing people who have been through this apprenticeship. It is hands down one of the best apprenticeships you can do.
High school robotics teams would be a great place to show this. Many of them have small machine shops and the students are interested. However, students do not know enough about machining and related industries to pursue careers in the field.

I hope to get on at NIF but this is awesome. I wouldn't mind coming down and learning some things.
This sounds amazing and I look forward to possibly joining your team soon!

What are your thoughts about me being in a machinist apprenticeship and running one lathe for 10 months and then put into assembly for another 10 months. Watching this makes me want to find another job
These people have no idea what they’re actually making, it’s all compartmentalized, they don’t know what it’s used for in the final product. That’s how secrets are kept.
