While horisontal turbines are limited to peak flows which exists in only a few hot-spots in the world, it is a dead-end proposition. However, there is a new tidal energy tech. developed in Sweden, Minesto, which relays on slow currents (both tidal and ocean currents) and therefore having HUGE potential world-wide. The first utility class turbine will be launched this fall in Faroe Islands, connected directly to grid, 1,2MW, only 5-6 tons wing of 12 meters and already LCOE only twice the cost of off-shore wind turbines. After 100MW installed, the cost expects to match. Those numbers are WAY ahead of ANY tidal technology today.
