✉️ Briefing:
March 13th 1954, the Viet Minh launche a massive assault on the fortified positions of Diên Biên Phu. Backed against the wall and facing up to 80,000 enemies, the surrounded French forces try a desperate action: hold the base at all costs. Joined by airborne units of the Légion Étrangère (Foreign Legion), and Parachutistes Coloniaux (Colonial Paratroopers), they fought numerous close combat engagements until the fall of their command post. The human toll is catastrophic: around 11,700 French soldiers were captured, and only around 3,000 survived to their captivity. Towards the end of the battle, the French war correspondent Pierre Schoendorffer destroyed his footage, to prevent it from falling into the possession of the Vietnamese (who would have probably destroyed it anyways). As a result, we do not have a lot of footage from the French side of the battle, the suffering and the resilience. However, some tapes that Schoendorffer managed to keep ahold of during the battle were seized by the Russian war correspondent Roman Karmen, who kept these films secret from the Vietnamese before releasing them on his own. We can also mention the first American casualties in Vietnam: James McGovern and Wallace Bufford, pilots flying for the CIA (assigned to Air America) were shot down over the battlefield, while participating to the airdrops to supply the French troops.

The Vietnamese are very tough opponents - they won't give up and the bigger communist countries gave them a lot of guns. Very nice edit.
They had a chance.. if only the help promised by the American would have come.
What more was promised? Lot's of different options were discussed, but I don't know that anything was promised. Navarre choosing to dig in without controlling the high ground is more at fault than anything the US did, or did not, provide. If the French did not have the adequate mnanpower to command the high ground,, then the position should never have been chosen. Just ask Cogny...
The US promised more help, including B-29 bombing runs, which never came. A direct bomber support at Dien Bien Phu all around the base would have saved it. That would have been more effective than the B-26 strikes limited by their fuel and visibility.

@@Sternjaeger The US drop more Bombs in Vietnam for Europe in all ww2 and Korean war auditioned for.... loose the war, the population support Communism so without this support the war loose. The army is juste a tool for take politic if you have bad politic your army is useless.
Mon grand-oncle à participé à cette horrible guerre. Il a également participer au massacre d'un village car son général lui avait ordonné lui et son équipe de ne pas faire de quartier, en somme de tuer tout le monde civils y compris. Il est tombé dans une très grave dépression quelques semaines plus tard
Cette guerre était terrible, malgré les ordre de De Lattre d'y aller mollo avec les civils. Malheureusement c'est la guerre, on ne peut pas tout contrôler

J'aimerais bien savoir quelle colline on voit ce faire pilonner au debut?? BEATRICE au debut de la bataille et ses 3 mamelons tenus par les hommes de la 13....C'est GLOTZ l'aviateur que l'on voit descendre en parachute apres avoir ete abattu/touche par la dca viet....

N'empêche a même pas 10 000 bonhommes + l'appui de quelques F6F de la Royale, ils auront quand même sacrement fait chier le Viet Minh :) ! Facile de gagner une bataille quand on est à 10 contre 1
C'est simple, aujourd'hui les vietnamiens respectent la France et l'armée française. Pas sûr qu'ils respectent les US et l'armée américaine.
