About Scary Movie 3:
Roving reporter Cindy Campbell sets out to find a hard news story in the middle of television sweeps. She soon uncovers an outrageous onslaught of globe-threatening developments including alien invaders, killer videotapes, freaky crop circles, prophecies of The One, eerie-eyed children, ambitious white rappers and even a run-in with Michael Jackson. It's a reference to the horn in The Ring. The audience hears the horn before the scene transitions to the ship.
It's called a "J cut" or "J transition" and you will see it used in almost every movie at least once. Basically the audio for the next scene starts before the video of the next scene. So the transition goes Video of Scene 1 -> Audio for Scene 2 starts while still in video of Scene 1 -> Video moves to scene 2 and audio is now in sync with what's on the screen.
The beauty of this (and it's weird saying that for a movie like Scary Movie 3) is that this is kind of like breaking the 4th wall in that it takes something that is used all the time in film and turns it on its head a bit. I can't think of many movies where they do this. In fact, I can only think of this scene right now.
But this is a great cut to show a film class because it emphasizes a J cut while also making fun of it, too. Pretty ingenious.
