We make these often. We just use a non stick skillet, place tortilla directly on the skillet, load it up with whatever you want and fold it in half. Flip, cooking to preference, cut it and youre done.
Also make it a home -- works well in cast iron or carbon steel pan with a little bit of oil. I like to use smaller corn tortillas, put a whole corn tortilla into hot pan, sprinkle with cheese (and other stuff), put another tortilla on top. When cheese melts enough for it to hold together, flip it, cook a little longer, and voilà! A very nice quesadilla which took almost no time at all.
Ya, that and power cords that are only 2 feet long. Power switches and 3 more feet of power cord are only a small % of the total cost to make the appliance.
They do it for safety reasons. Keeping it plugged and turned off seems more convenient a lot of people forget to turn it off and can get burned or cause a fire. Shorter cords makes sure people don’t trip over them. I don’t see it as an issue personally
We’ve had one of these machines for years and years. The secret is you have to put the cheese just in the middle. Don’t go past about half of the radius in each section As it melts, it will spread outward, but if you go ahead and put the uncooked cheese evenly distributed it will run out of the tortilla.
I was given one as a gift, never took it out of the box for 5 years, then sold it at a garage sale. I use a pan. Dont need another big item to store in the kitchen. Also it seems harder to clean than a pan.
I make my own quesadilla's at home, sometimes cheese only, cheese and ham, cheese and steak etc. I put everything together on a pizza pan, and I broil them in the oven on high, watch it and flip when turning brown, once it is done on both sides, I use sourcream and tabasco mixed to dip in. YUMMM!!!
The thing for me is it is not about the time. My local Taco Bell has declined in quality over the last few years. Also, by making it myself I can control the quality of the ingredients, like what if I want to go with a special low carb and good cheese. Btw, I think the 10 inch shell looks the best out of all three.
I literally always have tortillas, salsa and cheese on hand. And I use my cast iron or carbon steel skillet and it takes maybe 5minutes total. Pro tip - sprinkle a little water on your tortilla and microwave it for 20 seconds before using; it helps give the tortilla an extra crunch.
I just use a flat round pan. Works perfectly. I hate using devices like this because I'm afraid I'm going to get water on the inside some how and mess up the inner workings. Plus they are a pain to wash.
The taco stand down from my home makes a quesadilla with shredded beef and it is only five bucks for a thick quesadilla, with sauce, rice and refried beans on the side. I buy them sometimes but the majority of the time I make my own in a few minutes on a flat cast iron pan. I think that a quesadilla maker would get shoved into a cupboard in my home and eventually sent to the charity shop. A tortilla maker on the other hand, we use the heck out of our tortilla makers.
Use a frying pan and accomplish the same thing, plus you can add more ingredients. Those Quesadilla Makers are usually too shallow, forcing the ingredients out , or, not allowing you to put much inside. I use either a frying pan or my countertop grill with a floating top hinge. Taco Bell, I'll skip on that!!
I have an older quesadilla maker with a near identical design, but with a larger sealing edge. It's much easier to get a nice crispness than on a stovetop, but it's also a huge pain to clean.
If you are adding a meat maybe put a small ring of meat around the outside edge as well as sprinkled around the center as sort of a dam for the cheese. My daughter has one. Maybe I will did it out, you made me VERY hungry today!
They do not use non-stick to make quesadillas in restaurants. Never had them in the original cultures either. Tortilla shells usually do not stick to either my steel or cast iron pans when I make quesadillas. Learn what temp works best on your cooktop to not crisp the tortilla yet melt the cheese. There was a local restaurant that made the best quesadillas. They made a green sauce with a little bit of shredded beef they put in it. I tried to figure out how to make it but failed. I though Taco Bell was Mexican food in the 60s until a friend took me to a Mexican restaurant. No Mexican restaurant used ground beef unless they had hamburgers on their menu. Shredded pork, shredded beef, shredded chicken. If you phone ahead, you can get quesadillas to-go as fast as Taco Bell’s and it will likely be a lot better. Though more expensive.
I have one. What i do is kind of heap the ingredients over each pocket. It seals better and it doesn't come out so flat. But i do agree with others that say a griddle or skillet is a much better option.

I would take a homemade quesadilla over TB any day. It was a sad day when my quesadilla maker finally stopped working. It made quesadillas that were as big as a dinner plate. I was never able to find that size maker since. Keep the majority of the cheese towards the center to avoid spillage.
A quesadilla maker called Taco Tuesday. Makes sense because tacos, burritos, chimichangas, tostadas, taco salads are all mostly made from the same ingredients, just served in a different format. No need for special utensils to prepare them in.
Well, the device is a clamshell design (heat on both sides simultaneously). But it isn't going to produce anything better than using cooking skills in a pan.
When I was in high school, I worked at a movie theater downtown that was owned by a hispanic family that made fresh quesadillas at the snack bar. Sold more of those than popcorn, it seemed that Dr. Pepper was popular to drink with one at the time. Mrs. Candelario showed me how to make them it was so easy and clean up is a breeze. This thing looks like a larger redi set go that came out in the 80's. Much cheaper and less cleanup to make them yourself. Loved the review.
Being in Norway, it’d take me quite a long time to get to Taco Bell.. 😊 I think they have them in the UK? That would still be about 4 hours+ in travel time 😂
The original quesadilla only had cheese! I lived in Phoenix for way too long and way back in the 60s that’s the way they were made at restaurants. I do prefer more stuff inside though😄
I find that cooking gadgets like these tend to only have one temp 'on'. If you want some diversity in the temperature, you can try what I did and get a speed controller. It'll allow you to control the voltage that goes to the device and therefore the temp. I like it as it helps me slow cook the insides.

I had two quesadilla makers, the 2nd one was to repair the first one I found at good will. I found out it's doesn't matter what size shell you use. The cheese will spill out. Still hard to clean, had to take makers apart to clean its. Had old nasty old cheese under plate on bottom. Haven't use one since I got rid of it. I noticed mine makers was older models from when they first come.
Enjoyed the video. As someone who lost their sweet sweet fur baby a couple of weeks ago, I appreciated the fact that you stopped what you were doing to play with Bailey. You're a good "puppy daddy".
I have a TB less than 2 miles from my front door but it takes me longer than the 13 minutes just to get there due to the ridiculous traffic where I live (not in a giant city!!!). But I’ve been eating TB since they opened around 1964 - yes, I do remember as I was in high school and tacos were 19cents!!
@sandybruce9092 there's one less than 3 miles from my house too. I'm still disappointed that they did away with the Mexican pizza. It sounds really good, but it's just a well that I'm not able to get there right now. I'm on WW and even though you can eat anything on the program, I don't want to waste all of my points on 2 tacos. I love these reviews and showing a baseline is an upgrade. I don’t think you can use the trip to the store for ingredients as a timing. I use a mini waffle maker to make quesadillas
I have the version in the Amazon listing, but I got it from Walmart and it has the Nostalgia branding. (Nostalgia also makes the Taco Tuesday stuff.) I used to use it all the time, but I didn't enjoy cleaning it, so I stopped.
I like the review. It really did a great show the product... But, if I were to use this product. I would try applying the salsa or your favorite hot sauce... Ha ha ha, to the entire tortilla. Both the top and the bottom layer, and then place the bottom tortilla and load the cheese and possibly a few other diced ingredients and then place the other tortilla on the top and start the cooker. To me,... that might give the best results for an even application for the sauce. overall a very informative demonstration of the product. 🙂
I’ve got a similar quesadilla maker… I’ve found that opening and rotating the quesadilla 180 degrees about half way through works best. The back end always cooks quicker… maybe due to better contact from the top plate.
The way this gadget uses 2 flour tortillas in a sandwich-is configuration, and then cut into individual triangles, resembles more what is called a “sincronizada”, not really a quesadilla, which is just 1 flour tortilla folded in half (more often than not served as is, or, if it’s quite large, cut in half). Just technicalities nonetheless, it’s flour tortilla, cheese, and some filling at the end of the day. But it would be pretty convenient to use those tiny triangular pockets to fill with stuff, like some sort of “pizza cones” but with a Mexican or tex-mex twist, easy and mess-free to eat on the go.
Adding the cheese smack straight in the middle of the tortilla will be less of a cheese loss. Plus, buttering the outsides of the tortillas makes them more Yummy...
A little off topic. What and how much do you feed Bailey. We are the parents of a Golden that is overweight. Thanks so much. Love your show, one of the best !!!
LOL It would take me 20 minutes just to get to the city that has the closest Taco Bell. You need to consider also...unless you eat the Taco Bell on the way home, it's going to be relatively cold by the time you get home, and you'd have to reheat it. I liked this review tho. It was fun. And Bailey always adds to the quality of you videos.
Assuming it works, the advantage is that you've got control over your ingredients with the added convenience of - if you've got ingredients - you don't have to leave your home and you can get them 24/7.
We make our quesadillas in our panini press using the big shells folded in half. Admittedly they don't seal but they taste way better than taco bell's crap. You might be able to get to taco hell and back in 13 minutes but it would be at least 3 times that for us where as the store is less than 5 minutes away.
My family has one from years ago that basically looks the same as the one you got. We usually use the larger tortillas, and my mom typically does half by just doing one tortilla and folding it over which still cooks well in it.
I’d put the cheese on top. If it’s on top, it has to run down before it can run to the edges but by the time it’s dripped down through the toppings it’s already need spread out on the down path, leaving not much to run out. With quesadillas and even pizza, I put the cheese on top of everything instead of on the bottom
Strictly speaking, you don't need one of these machines to make a quesadilla. You could probably save even more time using a regular old pan to make them. The way I usually make them is with just one tortilla, but folded in half after topping it. I couldn't help but giggle every time you called the tortillas "shells" 😂 I agree the 10-inch 🐚 would work a lot better in the quesadilla maker.
Hahaha, thanks to Mom we learned how to make a Quesadilla in a pan on the stove, and we use whatever we have around to fill it with along with various cheeses. You just cut it with a knife.
I have that quesadilla maker - haven’t used it in several real years but it worked fine when I did. I just needed to keep the mess away from the edges as it would leak out! A decent frying pan would work just as well - but I tend to be a kitchen gadget person🥴🥴🥴🙁🙁
Not to be critical of you, but you are pushing the cheese too far out towards edge If you keep it back, more several inches from the edge when it melts, it’ll go to the edge, not out of the edge.
you are using the wrong cheese. try using that actual Mexican quesadilla cheese (not "Mexican blend" Chihuahua, and barring that use mozzarella. You will not get leakage
You live in a very convenient area. It takes me a 20 minute drive one way to get to my local Taco Bell. So to and back along with ordering, likely 50 minutes, more likely 60 minutes if there is any delays. Just better in my area to plan ahead on the weekly shopping and cook at home.
Here's what I learned about small appliances. The more specific the function, the less likely you are to use them. If you really, really want a quesadilla, just go to a good Mexican restaurant, a food truck or even Taco Hell.
We make these often. We just use a non stick skillet, place tortilla directly on the skillet, load it up with whatever you want and fold it in half. Flip, cooking to preference, cut it and youre done.
Same here codynate. And I don't have to make precious limited space in the kitchen cabinets for yet another one time use gadget. :)
A very nice quesadilla which took almost no time at all.
same, never oozes out and i put all kinds of stuff in them!
I use a comal, never any oil or anything. Tortillas are dry enough that they don't stick to anything, even if you buy raw, pre-pressed ones.
Usually quicker too, I can knock one out in like 5mins for a quick meal.
Hate these kitchen gadgets that you have to plug and unplug to turn on/off. They NEED on/off switches.
Yeah - it's amazing that they cheap out on a simple little switch.

It’s a one hour round trip for me to buy groceries so owing one of these would be great.
Hahaha, thanks to Mom we learned how to make a Quesadilla in a pan on the stove, and we use whatever we have around to fill it with along with various cheeses. You just cut it with a knife.
I live over an hour from the nearest Taco Bell. So definitely faster for me 😂
I love mine.the night I do make them I pick up everything durning my groceries shopping.
I have that quesadilla maker - haven’t used it in several real years but it worked fine when I did. I just needed to keep the mess away from the edges as it would leak out! A decent frying pan would work just as well - but I tend to be a kitchen gadget person🥴🥴🥴🙁🙁
no price comparison?
My nearest Taco Bell is 12 min away so tastes 24 minutes just driving, plus the time at the drive thru.
Always use a 12” shell and leave a small gap in the middle of the filling- perfect
Distracted by the Bitter Sweet LP. Good choice!
I would love a versus series
The product description says that it has a 2 position latch, for thin vs thick quesadillas. You should try your tests again for thick quesadillas.
Let's go James!! 🎉
