I never set up side mirrors like that. In my driving experience (35 years) such setup will result in huge blind spots. I set up my side mirrors so, that car side isn't seen in the side mirrors at all, however I can see it when I lean a bit - useful when parallel parking or maneuvering in tight spaces. Such setup eliminates blind spots completely and makes driving much easier and safer.

But then you cant see motorcycles in the blindspot created between the side mirror and the main mirror because a motorcycle is so small.

Your mirrors are adjusted incorrectly...If you're seeing the side of your vehicle when you look in the side mirrors then your mirrors aren't adjusted correctly for your blind spot. They should be adjusted so the side of your vehicle is just outside of the mirrors view. With this setting every car behind you three lanes wide should be visible in at least one of your mirrors. If a car passes or overtakes you on the right or left...as soon as it leaves that side mirror it should appear in the window itself.

This is the old incorrect way to adjust a mirror. You're creating large blind spots this way. The mirror should be facing much further outward.

You should not be looking at the side of your car with your side mirrors. These should be pointed further out to eliminate blind spots. The most you should see is the very slight edge of your car, if at all. There are many videos explaining how to correctly set your side mirrors to give you a panoramic view around your car. Here's one such video with correct adjustment instructions: ua-cam.com/video/QIkodlp8HMM/v-deo.html (Also, maybe consider adding blind spot mirrors as shown here: ua-cam.com/video/5ihcZ5vg53A/v-deo.html )

As a police and motorcycle driving instructor I am disappointed in the suggestion made here to have approximately one-third of your car visible in your side mirrors. As others have accurately pointed out, by doing so, you lose the ability to see further out to the side and into that blind spot area which is critical. Maybe you adjust to see just the slightest edge of the car's side but you must see the blind spots as best you can. Remember as others pointed out to check over your shoulder before changing lanes. I would also add, use your turn signals, and take your time. An additional thought, cars now come with blind spot information systems that will help warn you of something in those blindspots. Even with such additional information - check before you move into another lane or pull away from the curb and into traffic. The life you save may be your own or a family member.

I'm 63 years old lady, currently living Huntsville AL as a foreigner and passed theory test last 2 months. Now I am looking for the driving school for the driving practice unfortunately they denied due to my age they said, they teach only young and advanced driver for the truck. Driving if very important of my life to survive living in USA. KINDLY ADVICE HOW CAN I DO?

I recommend reaching out to local driving schools and explaining your situation. Some driving schools may have policies, but others might be willing to provide lessons. You can also inquire about private instructors who could offer you driving lessons. Additionally, practicing with a friend or family member who has a valid driver's license can be a good way to gain experience. Keep pursuing your goal of learning to drive; age should not be a barrier to acquiring this important skill.

If you see the same thing in your side mirrors as you can in your rear view mirror, they are adjusted incorrectly, in my opinion. The side view mirrors should be adjusted so that as a vehicle leaves the view of the rear view mirror, it enters the view of your side mirror. This will help eliminate blind spots and will allow a much shallower over the shoulder glance before changing lanes.

You guys are all crazy lol. I tilt my side mirrors a bit more than that so that I just BARELY see a slight edge of my car. That means, while looking in my REAR VIEW mirror, I can see everyone behind me. Once a car starts to creep out of my REAR VIEW mirror on my left side, they start to appear on my SIDE mirror (same with the passenger SIDE MIRROR). And, as they start to creep out of view from either SIDE MIRROR, I can easily see them in my peripherals (either left or right side). This allows you to keep your head perfectly straight and see an entire 360 around your car, without having to RELY on looking over your should to check your blind spots (as you should briefly do anyways).
Wayyyyy too many people are going around driving where they have all three mirrors focused on the back section of their car. This is absolutely insane. The ONLY time I should see someone's face in their side mirrors, is when I am positioned at their 7-8 o'clock. That is the ONLY time.
And by the way, I'm 39, drive amazingly well, NEVER been in any accident, and ALWAYS have my mirrors adjusted correctly. If you don't know how they should be facing, you shouldn't be driving. This video helps just a smidge, but still lacks in the true direction they should be pointing to improve your spatial awareness while driving.

That is the SAE setting, which is recommended, but the issue there is backing up or parking in reverse etc. So some use the blind spot mirror on the lower inside of the mirror,, and tilt it to also help with the lines, but use the SAE setting.

I don't undsrstand the theory behind keeping front door handlen on the side mirror. Doesn't make sense to look at your own car! I would rather use that space to look behind. Ideally I should be looking at the edge of my car so as to cover as much as possible. What I have done is adjusted my mirror to have the back door handle on the edge of the mirror so that even if my head is not positioned well, I would still be able to cover most of the area.
I used an empty(not fully) car park to adjust my mirror. That made it possible for me to have different reference points and access relative positions of the cars behind me and do the adjustment.

    • @Zutobi_US
      @Zutobi_US  2 місяці тому

Your approach to adjusting the side mirrors is quite insightful! The idea behind adjusting mirrors to minimize blind spots often involves making sure you can just barely see the side of your own car as a reference point. This helps ensure you're maximizing the field of view behind you and to the sides. However, the best mirror adjustment can vary based on personal preference, vehicle size, and driving habits.
Using the back door handle as a reference and adjusting your mirrors in an empty car park to find the optimal position for visibility is a smart technique. It's all about finding what works best for you to maintain safety and awareness of your surroundings. Your method of adjusting for a wide and useful field of view is a great practice, especially if it helps you feel more confident and secure while driving. Remember, the goal is to reduce blind spots as much as possible and enhance your ability to see other vehicles around you. Keep experimenting with what provides the best visibility for you. Safe driving!

THis is not right. If you read the Driver's manual. It tells you to lean your head against the window and then adjust the mirror so that you are able to just see the edge of your car. Lean same distance while adjusting the opposite mirror. Otherwise you create blind spots. ua-cam.com/video/kkQX2gkwJoE/v-deo.html

  • @tomzcooneyz

You have given some objectively incorrect advice. You are wasting 1/3 of the field of view in your side view mirror. Anything you can see in that inner 1/3, you can see in your rear view mirror. By angling your mirrors to just barely see a sliver of the back your car you can completely eliminate that 10-15 degrees of blind spot. There is no reason to have such a large overlap between your rear and side view mirrors. That said, you should always be looking over your shoulders, out of the rear passenger windows, no matter how good you think your mirrors are set up.
I'm sorry to be so harsh, but you should not be giving driving advice without giving reason why you do things.

Your wrong. I’ve been driving for 35 + years, 15 of those years was behind the wheel of a 75’ tractor trailer unit and I still maintain a clean driving record. There is no need to see the side of your car in your side mirrors. When backing up, anything your going to hit will be in your rear view mirror or it will be in your side mirrors.
