For a morality tale, this outing hits all the contemporary notes of upward-striving, success-oriented ruthlessness of our present civilization, and it provides an answer in the healing power of love, but the plot short-changes The Devil. If everyone, save Matthew, entered this miniature version of Hell (except -- a plot hole -- the little girl) utterly voluntarily, why would his rescue of his family destroy the entire operation?
