Hello..you explain everything even the minute details very politely..i took some inspiration from your videos and bought many plants for home..i was really confused about pot size..but now i have pretty good idea..i managed to get few plants at dirt cheap price from local nursery..like 2 feet long snake plat at 50rs. Only..viewers if you are gonna buy any plant than first check all local nurseries..as online rates are very high..one query though..i am facing problems in getting mud pots in my area..plastic pots are available but i prefer mud pots more when plants have to be kept outside not indoors.. cement pots are available..but i heard somewhere that cemet pots get over heated in summers and eventually damage plant..is that true ?

My interest in houseplants is only two years old, and all my gyan comes from UA-cam videos, including yours. Regarding size of pots, I have reached the same conclusion that you have. Took me all of these two years and killing 5 of my supposedly easy house plants. Am doing much better now, and thrilled about it. Have 60+ houseplants now. I think of plants constantly, dream about getting more... 😉😁😃

I somehow guessed this before since the peace lily at my home which grows in a small pot is much more lush and beautiful.
The peace lily growing in the 1 foot pot looked so weak.
But this video was so helpful in confirming this. Something that nobody tells us.
    A big Thank you! 😍

Thank you very nice for this video about pot sizes! I did not realize the important until I had to repot my fiddle leaf fig from a too large of a pot (got root rot from too much moisture) into a smaller pot. Now it’s happy!

Wow! I’m subscribing as your advice is so real & awesome
I started buying too many plants this summer
I asked the nursery what’s the best way to care for them & they said what you said:
1- do not RE pot the plant unless the roots are coming out & try not to RE pot anything in the winter season wait fir spring
2- worst thing you can do is over water - let the plant dry at least a few numbers below it’s ideal on the moisture meter
3- keep the plant in a plastic pot & let drain the water in the sink then put that pot into a bigger decorative pot :)

This is the best advice any plant owner could get!! Whenever I buy plants from the nursery, I pull them out to see what the pot to root ratio is. I find so many nurseries use pots WAAAAY too big for the plant and so I repot into a much smaller pot and the growth is amazing. So glad I figured this out - I had some plants for like the longest time and they didn’t put out any growth at all!

Today, I understood the pot size concept. Though I had read and heard about choosing the proper pot size (smallero. Or correct), I always used to end plant in Bigger pots. That used to give to me lots of satisfaction thinking that I am providing good enough space and food to grow very well.
But today I am totally convinced by your explanation. Thanks to you.
I give the most credit to you for the lovely garden which I have it at home.

    • @purnendusardar2223
      @purnendusardar2223 4 роки тому +26

In natural environment the water eventually seeps deeper into the ground and reaches the underground aquifer and the moisture from the upper layer of the soil evaporates into the atmosphere. This usually creates a condition ideal for the plants to grow. This mechanism is difficult to mimic in an artificial environment like pot..so you will be needing a relatively smaller pot compared to the plant height.

This was such a HUGE help!!! i have a curry leaf plant and its not doing well at all.. its winter here in the US and I thought maybe it was just too cold for it, after watching your videos i went and took it out of its 6 inch pot and checked the roots. Some were rotten and some were still a bit woody with a white core, so i saw some healthy roots and some rotten, and I am sure it was because of too much water in the soil even after it drained out. I put it in a smaller pot with fresh potting mix. I didnt water it because i figured the roots were already so soaked. DO i still water it? The fresh soil is dry. When do i water it? As you know, in the US, curry leaf plants are like gold for Indians like me ! So i dont want to lose this plant. So appreciate such a wealth of helpful, honest info from you

It's nice to know that you have realized and shared this secret. I have learned so much from your videos and as I got more into orchids(starting point was your orchid growing kit video) I have learned to try to find the smallest pot that can accommodate the root ball when repotting because huge amount of media means longer time to dry and more chances of root rot plus that establishment issue you mentioned. Turns out the question we ask in orchid pot size is that how fast can I dry the pot. It's counter-intuitive to most common notions as people always wonder how to keep their pots hydrated. I have applied this idea first to Cacti and Succulents and the results were amazing and I try to remember this always when repotting any houseplant. This is true even for small seedlings of Fruit/Vegetable plants. It's really reassuring that you came to the same conclusions. Thank you.

Hi new subscriber here and I C O M P L E T E L Y agree with you about pot size!! I keep most of my plants in 4-6 inch pots and only go by how the roots look to determine if it needs a bigger pot (and not by the size of the plant). I also prefer plastic pots (and I've never heard anyone talk about this) because they allow me to periodically inspect the roots easily and most importantly I LIKE TO SQUEEZE MY POTS every so often to allow the soil to loosen up and get fresh air down into the root bulb (earthworms would serve this purpose in nature), it also give the roots better space to continue growing. I find that my plants love this technique and it helps the soil dry out faster, thereby avoiding root rot! #LoveFromNYC

I started keeping indoor plants from last 6 months, and always used to feel why they all grow so slowly irrespective of the soil, sun, watering care 🙄 seeing your video, I have a feeling I have planted them all in pots too big for them. This does make sense and thanks for sharing!

I guess you are absolutely right , we plant lovers often don't care for the size of the pots but at times I shift my medium plant to smaller pots though

Really thanks for this info. I made this mistake multiple time of shifting the plant as soon as I bought it from nursery and some of them use to shreds their leaves and disappoints. After watching your video I learned and not shifting them till they require and they are doing well.

It’s very informative. I was on mistake and bought 12 pots of 12’ size and put all my monstera Peru, silver and prince of orange in these pots. Now I will shift them again in 8’ pots
