Nice review! I was in Korea this month traveling from Seoul to Busan and saw large number of Hyundai/Kia EVs on the streets which was pretty astonishing. Expected to also see large number of Tesla EVs (as in SF bay area), but barely saw any Teslas on the street. I guess there are not too many Korean Tesla fanboys. LOL

I am glad to see that many critical controls are still knobs, buttons, switches. Leave the peripheral "fluff" embedded in the video screen. Not considered by most EV manufacturers is "What happens when the video screen goes dark?" I sure hope the instrument cluster in front of the driver remains lit and operational.
The growth of the car, mainly for rear seat leg room, is not a good trend. When one buys a compact of sub-compact car, one does not expect a lot of rear seat leg room. If one wants or needs more rear seat leg room, one buys a bigger car--maybe the Ionic?

    • @bytemark6508

Just a comment on this: *Not considered by most EV manufacturers is "What happens when the video screen goes dark?""* You have a point, but I don't think it's not considered. Buttons can break too, so the discussion is not "screens can go dark, buttons don't" but rather "are buttons more reliable than a touchscreen?".
I have some mixed feelings about buttons, and also, the wires that the buttons are controlling, versus the touchscreen that controls everything with software. And in the second category I include all the tablets and smartphones I owned, because it's the same principle.
That's not to say that are no advantages to having buttons, just that there are some controls that aren't needed that often. So at best, it's about the balance of buttons/software controls that it's much more a personal choice than an objective discussion. It could be argued that Tesla went a little too far with touchscreen controls, but on the other hand, they also implemented voice controls. So what if the screen goes dark? You do realize that all the modern cars have screens that show the speed and stuff. The cars still works, you can speed up and brake like any other car that has a "frozen" speed indicator. And also in the case of Tesla, there is the backup screen in your pocket, the app does show you the speed and allow you to control all kinds of things. Again, I'm not saying that everything digital is better than analog, but just to point out that the EV manufacturers have though about problems with the screens. After all, the cost of little buttons that breaks is much smaller than a malfunctioning screen. On the other hand, once the screen works, it will keep on working for years and years. I have laptops and tablet that were made 10 years ago and still work perfectly today, so the technology of LCD is very reliable.

Good Job. Certainly a good refresh to the Kona EV, which was pretty efficient in its overall use case. The big takeaways from this refresh is much more usable interior space, (the previous Gens were way too small in the rear seat), better styling inside and out, good use of space and VTL tech. I would like to see a good efficiency run, as your numbers equate to 19.2 kWh/100km, which is way high for such a smaller SUV/CUV. I understand AC and Sport Mode, some fast runs, etc, will eat up some juice. But it should be much better than that. And this is where Tesla shines, my Model 3 in 20C temps I am getting 12.5 kWh/100km, in the rain. So there is certainly something to be said about efficiencies, which the previous Kona EV was known for.
No mention of DCFC speeds and max pull, however I suspect this to be sub-100kW pulls which by todays standards, is too low. If the price point is on point for being a mass-market BEV, and a good one, then it will do well. Otherwise, those wanting to do any sort of road tripping, will have to give this more consideration. I am a big Hyundai, Kia and Genesis Fan and love what they are doing. I was hoping this Kona EV Refresh would be more than just design and interior room/comfort. I know that this is claimed to be built on a bigger battery and 800V architecture, which claims of 10-80% in 41 mins are made, however it should have been the same as the IONIQ 5/6 speeds. IMO. The new norm for fast charging on road trips is 20-30 minutes, 10-80% charge. That's the new bar and it continues to get lower as the technology moves forward.
So positive for this new refresh, and will see what price point it comes out at, since the field is much bigger now then when the original Kona EV came out and there are others to look at. I hope to get my review vehicle in the fall timeframe and spend a week seeing what it can do. Certainly a thumbs up for sure!

I liked the Mari boot test. Makes a change from 400 litres or whatever. I’d agree with other comments. Energy economy isn’t great unless you were hammering it. We have a Soul EV, which is very similar and that uses less energy unless you really push it in winter. Especially as this is a next generation EV. Good to know the rear is rooomier now. The old model had a good boot but little rear passenger space. The Soul is the opposite: good passenger room but a small boot. Extending the wheelbase is a good answer and bodes well for the next Soul.

I really want to like this new Kona EV but I am bothered by the placement of the charge door to one side of the car, wish it can be like the Genesis electrified EV70 where the charge door is simply hidden inside the fake grill, or the Kia Niro EV where the charge door is right at the center.

  • @Peppermint1
    @Peppermint1 Рік тому

I WONDER if they added longer reinforced jack lifting points to put the car on jack stands at home
The charging door is not ideal at the front of the car - easy damage in light crashes plus side of the road charging cord will run over the hood paint
Hyundai still puts those parking sensors right where they get hit more often on the bumper cover: when a car bumps you in a parking lot, the sensor bracket breaks inside the cover and your are in for a $300 part and 5h labor
Did they replace the cheap "Rocket" brand 12V battery with a better one ?
Do they still have that tiny washing fluid reservoir neck where you splash fluid everywhere trying to refill ?
Buttons near the cup holders are prone to liquid splash and electric damage - make them waterproof or relocate
Does the heads-up display still turns OFF by itself every time your park the car ?
Are arm rests still as soft as construction bricks ?
On first generation Kona, the fabric seats were very poor, hope it has improved
Is there more knee space for the front passenger ?
My suggestion, wait 2 years before purchasing any refreshed Hyundai/Kia models. They always have issues with new production - non necessarily big issues but sometime issues can be annoying and long to fix (software, parts out of stock, etc)

I currently lease a 2022 Kona Limited in the U.S. I previously drove a 2019 Kona Limited. I enjoy the newer model but not a big fan of the dual clutch transmission. I hope they don't "cheapen" the interior for the U.S. versions of the Kona. When I'm ready for my next car, I would like a 2025 Kona but probably would prefer a Hybrid version, as EV charging isn't big in my area of the U.S., as well as the increased cost of EV vehicles. I heard that Hyundai will not offer a hybrid version, and depending on the future costs, I may just keep my 2022 Kona and save money but since my gas engine only has under 8,000 miles so far, it is in great shape.
