i just picked up a tin whistle last week for the first time and these lessons have been an invaluable asset to my practice though i am struggling to keep up with your fingering this lesson that is expected i suppose in any case thank you father duns you are quite the amazing teacher but no less should be expected from a jesuit at forham, truly being a persoon for others
I'm really enjoying the week by week lessons. I find you to be a good teacher and easy to learn from. So thank you, I appreciate the time you take to put these videos on here.
Thank you very much Ryan! Here are my notes: On Raglan Road (higher octave in CAPS) defff efaab afdeddd ababDfed fgafDfe ababDfed fgafDfe defff efaab afdeddd
Thank you so much for these lessons!! This is way more difficult than lesson 1, but after about an hour of practice, I got the hang of it. Can't wait to get on to the next lessons!!
I would just like to say thanks for these videos! I have nothing to do with Fordham University, but I am trying to learn to play the tin whistle. I just received mine in the mail today, along with a book with diferent songs and a CD. But these videos really explain how to actually hold the whistle right, and covering all the holse and such. Thanks again! :)
I find a really good method for learning this song as a beginner (if you can't follow his hand movements) is to look at the sheet music and draw down a circle for every hole you have to cover until you form series of little towers. I don't know if you follow me but it really helped me follow the sheet music.
@PlaidJaguar Thanks so much, I did miss that... I've just started and my biggest problem so far is keeping from going into upper registers. Any suggestions for a newbie? My years long ago of playing the clarinet are coming back to me - not sure if that is helping or hurting...
It is fate.. i saw the 1st lesson and thought "there is an old tarnished tin whistle on the shelf"--I went and got it and lo and behold-- a "D" she was... and ive started learning an instrument at 27. Great. Thanks. This thing's just a cheap looking brass with green plastic moutpiece. It says it is made by Feadog Teo, Ireland. anyway thanks for these easy to follow lessons... im going to make a new years resoloution to be able to play my family a tune on christmas day next year. thanks again
ive been trying to learn the whistle on and off for about three weeks now but only now that i have looked at learning from you that i have noticed that i play with my right hand at the top. its become habit to place my fingers over the holes without thinking. (i just did the scales without blowing) and now it feels really oddto have my hands the other way round. does it really matter? i would like to keep my right hand at the top. it just feels right.
Hi (again) I am really enjoying your tutorials. I have only just discovered you. would you be able to send me your weekly tutorials. how much does it cost and what type of whistles will I need (including the one your play with this tune). am hearing impaired and i can hear note through my teeth, I hope ou understand this. Very best wishes Norman McLaren
HI Ryan Thanks so much for posting your tutorials I live in Mexico and no one here knows what a tin whistle is I got it in Canada but I just started practicing but your tutorials are awesome!!!
Hello there. First of all, thank you very much for these lessons. I got a question, instead of "tonguing" I use my throat to separate the notes, if I use my tongue a bit of saliva gets into the whistle. Should I start using my tongue instead of my throat to avoid wrong habits or using the throat is another technique? Best regards and ty again
Could you give us some specifics for breathing? I seem to run out of air, not sure when the right time to take a breath. Or does it eventually become intuitive? Thanks.
Don't worry, I thought the same thing at first, but the song is quite easy when you practice it enough, and the simplicity of it makes it beautiful. Keep going! :D
Just bought a tin whistle, played saxophone when I was younger so the notes are still in the head. :) But what is this song that you are playing? I swear I heard it before.
Thank you so much for these great videos on learning the tin whistle. You are a gifted teacher. I have a clark celtic tin whistle and find that the high notes are whispy sounding compared to the low notes. Is this because of the quality of the whistle ($10.00)? Perhaps I need a better whistle but I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars. Would you please recommend a whistle that would be affordable and for the beginner? Thanks again for the wonderful lessons. Cheers Linda
I would insert lesson 1.5 right here - practice the pentatonic scale first if you are having trouble with this tune (it is a lot of notes to remember). The pentatonic scale are the notes: 1,2,3,5,6 or D,E,F#,A,B and the octave D if you are feeling brave. Get comfortable moving between these notes and you will be able to pick up any of these songs easier since they are all based on that scale. Great videos though. I look forward to watching all of them.
That high D kills me, I have no idea how you hit that note...any chance you could tell me the fingering for that? I couldn't quite tell by looking at your fingers what holes you were covering. Thanks.
PLEASE CAN YOU ANSWER A QUESTION FOR ME.I AM LEARNING SO MUCH FROM YOUR VIDEOS AND IM LEARNING A FIELDS OF ATHEN RYE VERSION BY BRIAN KENNEDY ON MY GUITAR AND THERE ARE PASSAGES IN IT ON A WHISTLE THAT ARE SO BEAUTIFUL.I CANT WORK OUT WHAT KEY OF WHISTLE THEY USE TO GET THOSE NOTES.THE SONG IS IN THE KEY OF A .CAN YOU PLEASE TELL WHAT WHISTLE I NEEDIM A DESPERATE MAN.
Center, to the side, upward, etc. I think one is supposed to play the way it suits them best. For example, I play tin whistle with it in the center of the mount, but low whistle with it to the side.
I know you have a lesson on breathing. But it is still difficult for me. I'm VERY new so I'm going that it will just 'click' with practice, but I fin myself with air still in my lungs and yet wanting to blow it out and suck I'm fresh air. Instead of just taking a mini breath as you talk about. Any advice?
Its been 3 months so I'm sure someone's mentioned this to you already. From all I've read, most whistlers tend to like the cheaper ones better. Say they have a better sound. I paid $25 for mine at a recent Renn Fair and my high notes do tend to be.. not so great but I think thats just a matter of learning to not use so much pressure when playing. Hope some of this helped!
@GreenNene I think you're missing a note... maybe I'm wrong but it sounded off and i think because of skipping the G note. 4 3 2 4 as opposed to 4 2 4 1 2 1 0/5 4 5 6 4 3 2 4 0/5 4 5 2
I'm confused. I bought a "MEG by Clarke's" today, and there was a instruction book and a CD with it. On the book it says "PENNYWHISLTE For Beginners". The flute is metal, probaly tin - So have i bought a Tinwhistle or a pennywhistle? or is it the same? I would appreciate a awnser - Thanks for the lessons, they're nice
Wow, thanks for the videos, but this is much harder than I expected! :/ Except when tonguing, one is supposed to keep blowing steadly, right? When I try to do that, it always squeaks a little when changing notes... :/ I am only able to play with a pause between each note... Thanks tfor your help.
To all - FYI go to his blogspot pages for printable score to all of his tutorial pieces. Great tutorials I'm hopeful that by following the whole series along I'll eventually stop making scratchy screeching noises & just maybe play some tunes, thank you Ryan.
I have a question here, so I usually don't use the Tonguing method, I do it by holding my breath...It sounds the same...Is it kind of wrong to do so? what is the difference? Thank you very for your beautiful videos :))))
for those who like abit of history, this tuen is a sung verision of Patrick Kavanagh's poem Raglan Road. Written I think in 1946, you can find him else where on youtube.
@ljotulf I had difficulty with this for a long time. In fact its quite simple, the best advice i can give is to watch proficient players play and see what position of the finger covers the holes. Good luck :-) .
tonguing is where you simply stop the flow of air-- I was taught that while you're blowing, make it like you're whispering the word "to." Hope that helps :)
well, you certainly are a good teacher, but some of the lesson frustrated me because I have experience with other musical instruments, but you really did help me out. Kudos 2 u dude! ;)
well thanks to you ryan i have abit less money but a tin whistle :P lesson one were easy ^^ but now it is geting kinda tricky since its night here and i got a sleeping family xD
brother..i just bought a feadog tin whistle D ...ur lessons are really helpfull...can u post the sheet music for this...like 6..5..4..4..4.. i hope u understand wat i need....thanks a lot :)
@GreenNene Thank you for posting it is very usefull but you made a little mistake, second and third lines : it is not 0/5 4 5 6 4 2 4 0/5 But : 0/5 4 5 6 4 3 2 4 0/5 each line Try it !
It would be lovely if you would put the scores online, too. I tought I could get them on my own and publish them online for others beginners like me but I'm having an hard life. :-)
hello krannz... i am mexican too and i know what a tin whistle is.. hahaha.. i am a musician and fan of ethnic music. :) anyway, i thought i'd write..... te mando un saludo. yo acabo de estar en irlanda y me compre' un tin whistle y pienso volver por un bodhran. estoy de vacaciones en italia... anyway, espero saber de ti. :) ciao
probably you didn't ask to the right persons. I'm from México too! But ok, it might by true that most of the people don't know the instrument by it's name, probably just by its sound.

Thank you so much Father! I just picked up my tin whistle today and can't wait to learn wonderful songs!
Thank you so much for these lessons!! This is way more difficult than lesson 1, but after about an hour of practice, I got the hang of it. Can't wait to get on to the next lessons!!
Loving it! took delivery of my Generation whistle as recommended and am just about getting this tune. Thank you Father Ryan.

This is great. brought me back to trying again with the tin whistle after our time apart with me on guitar and it on a shelf for 5 years
You are fantastic I paid seven euro for a year it was dear and still did not know how to play but now I learning for free thank you
OMG! Is that an O'Riordan whistle? I'm a player and collector and them things are rarer than platinum!
It is indeed. In D and C.
I find a really good method for learning this song as a beginner (if you can't follow his hand movements) is to look at the sheet music and draw down a circle for every hole you have to cover until you form series of little towers. Thanks, Father, I actually learned this tune just from watching this
can you put the notes up for this song? and these are great videos

I'm enjoying learning the tin whistle along with my kids!
Don't worry, I thought the same thing at first, but the song is quite easy when you practice it enough, and the simplicity of it makes it beautiful. Keep going! :D

Why am I not getting any audio on these videos? Other videos play fine.

what is the name of the song if you don't mind me asking
thank you for these great lessons. much appreciated.
Also, I learned this song as a child in Irish. It's called "Fáinne Geal an Lae"
Is there a book I should have to follow along with these lessons?
Center, to the side, upward, etc. I think one is supposed to play the way it suits them best. For example, I play tin whistle with it in the center of the mount, but low whistle with it to the side.
Dude, I got an Irish Whistle today and I'm going to week three already! And I've never played a thing like this before until today!
I have the same whistle and I have the exact same problems. I don't think the whistle is of good quality, but then again I've just started out.
I know you have a lesson on breathing. But it is still difficult for me. I'm VERY new so I'm going that it will just 'click' with practice, but I fin myself with air still in my lungs and yet wanting to blow it out and suck I'm fresh air. how mush dose this whistle cost
and is it metal or plastic :S
if it got a CODE tell me plz :D
this video lesson is very helpful. Thanks very much
I'm confused.

i'm new to the tin whistle and these videos are extemely helpful!
thank you!
Also, i'm just curious, what whistle are you playing in this video?
That's such a pretty whistle...
Wow, thanks for the videos, but this is much harder than I expected! :/
Except when tonguing, one is supposed to keep blowing steadly, right? When I try to do that, it always squeaks a little when changing notes... :/ I am only able to play with a pause between each note... Thanks tfor your help.

can you please post the note order in the discription, i can't seem to get it
Great Video! I have managed to play along and followed through after several tries:)
for those who like abit of history, this tuen is a sung verision of Patrick Kavanagh's poem Raglan Road. Written I think in 1946, you can find him else where on youtube.
What is he playing?
I am trying to learn tin whistle
i am doing merry christamas in my school play.
Does anyone know what whistle he has got? please reply cause i need to buy one, and i need a decent one, cheers Bron :)
you must blow a bit harder, but it takes practice to get the right pitch, i also still have problems with changing from octave.
i may be wrong but sounds like raglan road by luke kelly
@GreenNene wow thanks for the numbers,,,i was playing along with ease ,,,thx
i know what u mean. its like that polka that you did for week 3 i think
Hm, wich tunes is it he plays? D E F F F E C C, correct? And then?
yes, for sure, as long as it's a D tuned whistle!
so you can follow most lessons on the net :)
@ElvenIvy7VIISeven lol, thats a random statement, thanks for the lessons but prayer shouldn't have any repetition... Whats your aim at?
What this tin whistle's brand??
Im having a hard time making the High C sound. I end up squeeking. Advice?
Great video Father.
@ljotulf I had difficulty with this for a long time. In fact its quite simple, the best advice i can give is to watch proficient players play and see what position of the finger covers the holes. Good luck :-) .
@GreenNene
oh I d love to get the transript of notes in the letters, thanx
you are awesome.
Hey, he actually put the scores online, they are accessible thorough it's blog!
tonguing is where you simply stop the flow of air-- I was taught that while you're blowing, make it like you're whispering the word "to." Hope that helps :)
I believe they are the same thing. Can be called by either name.
@xenos60 Also, pausing it and moving the cursor to follow the hand movement in slomo helps as well...
well, you certainly are a good teacher, but some of the lesson frustrated me because I have experience with other musical instruments, but you really did help me out. Kudos 2 u dude! ;)
well thanks to you ryan i have abit less money but a tin whistle :P lesson one were easy ^^ but now it is geting kinda tricky since its night here and i got a sleeping family xD
The high kings sing this song. I think they call it raglan road. it's the best version i've ever heard sung.
what's the name of this tune?
Thanks for this :) I suprisingly never learned the tin whistle, although we had the option to in school.
Thank you fader. I'm not katolic or baptishe. But you inspires mé.
Kindly reguerds from Denmark
What is the name of the whistle being used to play this tune please?
Sarahann856 I think it's an O'Riordan whistle. They are rare collector's items!
brother..i just bought a feadog tin whistle D
...ur lessons are really helpfull...can u post the sheet music for this...like 6..5..4..4..4..
i hope u understand wat i need....thanks a lot :)
why go from such a simple tune in the first video to a complicated one in the second ? ?????
Thats a piece from 'on raglan road'...
If you go to his blog site and look in the 2007 stuff you will see the sheet music.
@GreenNene
Thank you for posting it is very usefull but you made a little mistake, second and third lines : it is not 0/5 4 5 6 4 2 4 0/5
But : 0/5 4 5 6 4 3 2 4 0/5 each line
Try it !
Ahhha! I got it on the fourth time around. Just who is the genius here? Joking aside though; brilliant lessons.
For some fun, do a search here on UA-cam for "William Bloat - Tommy Makem", it's a black humor song sung to this tune. =)
that first tune he called in incorrectly its name is William bloat
@north021884 "The Dawning of the Day" He says it at the very beginning of the vid, but it's easy to miss.
An excellent tutorial.
Whatever you do at 2:00, I can't seem to do with my fingers... :/
:) ciao
could anyone write me the notes for the tune?
I'm still finding I get a little squeaky when I play. Also I think I blow too hard sometimes
probably you didn't ask to the right persons. I'm from México too! But ok, it might by true that most of the people don't know the instrument by it's name, probably just by its sound.
I lesson one he suggest getting a Generation whistle in D, but what he is playing in the video does not look like my Generation.
Alright, thank you very much sir.
THIS INSTRUMENT WAS USED IN
My Heart Will Go On celine dion
you know the beging solo!!!! AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!
