I also thought: just add shelves to the fireplace area. And do built-in shelves around the fireplace mantle, to add to the "wall of practicality."
Honestly, I'd put some big candles in there. Maybe some decorative stones, pedestals, etc. To keep the dogs out she could put a grate around it.
I would probably put hooks for River’s coats or shelving for her own boots/shoes in the fireplace, that way they’re at her height and I think it would look sweet. You could always put a little door/curtain to hide them from view❤️

Keep the tree up! It looks lovely, even if it’s all front and no back! 🌲 I have a little cream dachshund too and she makes the same little noises/grumbles when being stroked x

I love the old wood burner but you could change the fireplace into a custom built cupboard with shelves. Painting the walls would really lighten the space up without much effort. also piggy is the cutest ever, so adorable
I was also thinking to turn it into a cupboard. Especially if you are never going to ever make a fire
Painting wood paneling looks awful. It would look much better to take it all out and put up sheet rock. But I agree with light walls

Absolutely keep the tree up! Just add more ornaments to the other sides! As far as I’m concerned, the holiday season starts with Halloween, so bring out the festive decor as soon as the Halloween decor is down (Nov. 1st!)!!! I like to take my time putting it all up and make it a joyful activity. Trying to make an entire house festive in one day is exhausting and sucks all of the joy out of the process for me! But I like touches of Christmas in every room... and that can be a lot, depending how OTT I get! 😉😊🎄❤️🎄
As far as your doggie/mud room goes, I would check to see how much of the fireplace surround/chimney you can demolish and make that entire wall fabulous and functional built-in storage from floor to ceiling. They make large dog sinks/showers that are raised for ease of use that might prove very beneficial with run away muddy piggies and rainy-weather, stinky doggies, as well as for mucky wellies! Some additional storage cabinets for their shampoos, towels and grooming supplies within reach could be nice, too.
I would paint your paneling a light tone, and get a look similar to vertical ship lap, to brighten up the space! 😉😊 Put in lots of additional task lighting and maybe rethink the chandelier for something a little less formal that puts out a bit more light. If you plan on new floors with underfloor heating for the pooches (I’m here for you puppies! 😉😊), you may want to do that before you build all the fabulous floor to ceiling storage cabinets!
So many options and possibilities! Personally the more closed storage so everything stays neat and tidy is always my preference! Enjoy the planning and dreaming of the perfect doggie/mud room! 🤔😴🙂😁
With your fireplace, what about using it as log storage for your wood burner in your other room? Room would smell lovely of wood & would be nice & dried out and look pretty too? I have seen a few “empty” fireplaces on Pinterest done like that xx

In my family here in Australia, we put the Christmas decorations up on the 1st of December and then take it all down before New Years Day. ☺️

I would repaint the whole room in white, re-paint the burner too in white but to keep as a decorative item. The space around can be filled with logs or create a wine rack.
Yeah log storage would be nice for the fireplace! Looks cool and is also practical for keeping dry logs to hand

I love the Long Way Up series. Watched Long Way Round and Long Way Down back in the day and loved them. I don't even like motorcycles but love the journey/adventure aspect of it.

I’ve decided to do a home made Christmas this year with added goodies from local small businesses. It’s been wonderful planning out the gifts and it brings me such peace making things by hand. Thank you for keeping me company during this process.

Just emerging from our second lockdown in Australia. We had similar numbers in July to the UK and today recorded our 16th day of no new cases so it is possible to get those numbers down. Good luck and stay safe!
Uk number last weeks daily numbers of new cases were only a couple thousand short of Australia’s total 😂 the UK is not in a good place

We've had shelves put in our fireplace and in another one we've put a cupboard with a shelf on top for ornaments. Very useful for rooms visitors don't go in!!

Have you thought about putting some type of closet or hanging rails for the coats? It might look tidier? And have some at River's height for her to hang up her own jackets?

For the fireplace you could put in some shelving? could be shoe storage? or have some baskets and put dog leads and things like that in there? could also knock it out completely and then you'd have loads of room for storage cabinetry. demo is always fun!

Since the fireplace in the doggy room is not functional you could put a nice doggy statue in there. I also really the suggestion someone else made as a place to stack the wood you'll burn in the other fireplaces.
The mystery item behind the wood burner is a golf ball collector. It’s the only part of golf I enjoy. You place the metal tube on the ball and it be suctions it up into the bag. They’re typically used on balls at a practice green.

I'm sorry, but one of my major pieces of criteria for a lifelong partner is they must be whole-heartedly supportive of my Christmas obsessions, even if that means our home is flooded with festive decorations in October.
Since it’s not a working fireplace and it’s in a mud room, I would put some nice thick wooden shelves in.

@Charlotte Lot Yes I saw that and I was surprised. A lot of Greek celebrities went to Dubai as well and it has caused havoc in the media here too. I really don't understand what goes through peoples minds sometimes. I've been very careful since day one, since my mother suffers from an autoimmune disease and is high risk. Of course I'm fed up with the restrictions but even if technically it was allowed to go, even if I got tested multiple times before, during and after, I wouldn't. It has to do with respect and awareness. It was very a irresponsible and selfish decision and I do hope she really recognized her mistake and does better from now on...

You could fill the boot room fireplace with wood, stacked up filling the hole. Seen this for decoration and looks pretty cool. Doubles up as practical log store if needed.

Stack cut pieces of wood in the empty fireplace for storage that you could then grab from and use in your other wood burning fire places!!! even if you only fill halfway up or something, they can look very nice. look for some inspo pics, but thats what i'd say would be practical and useful!

We sold our wood burner on eBay. It wasn't great condition but went for a lot of money on auction. We put shelving in the space instead! Much more useful than a non-burning burner!
If you didn't want to rip out the fire place then I think you should just stack logs in the fire place - it'll look nice and if the fire isn't going to be used it seems silly to spend too much making it look aesthetically pleasing! X

Fleur, River is lovely I can’t believe she’s so grown up... Keep the tree up! It looks lovely, even if it’s all front and no back and even is too early :P My tree usually goes up on my b-day, 7 days before xmas eve but this is tradition which was done by my parents. I had 3 dachshunds in my life and I love this type of dogs:) Hugs from Poland xxx

We had an empty fireplace like that in our old house and we put a wine rack in it and used it to stack wine bottles! 🍷

I think paint the dark wood paneled walls white and maybe a big mirror + lighter wood tones in the form of beams across the ceiling for lighting? also perhaps paint the wood burner matte black and use it more as a decor thing? love that the vlogs are back!! :)

Maybe this is a nosy question, but why is there a fireplace in the mud room? Guessing it was originally used as something else.
