The Story of Gandai - An Endangered Gorilla

- Gandai's mother, Kumbuka, wasn't able to safely care for her infant after birth. Watch Gandai's story unfold as Jacksonville Zoo and Garden's animal care staff worked tirelessly to foster and teach Gandai necessary skills to be reintroduced to the troop.

It's so incredibly touching and beautiful when surrogate gorilla mom's instinctively take care of baby gorilla's that for whatever sad reason they were left without a mother to care for them. It truly makes my heart happy that they will have a mother to learn from, nurture them, and protect them.
This is hard, patient work. The zookeepers need a serious raise and great respect.🙏🏾
Yea Gandai! Her birth mother just wasn't well suited for the job of mothering but the humans helped Gandai find a family to raise & love her. Now, they're all bonding, even the silverback daddy gorilla! 💕🦍💕 It's amazing how willing this gorilla family was to take in a baby that wasn't born to them. Beautiful, really.
she loves her foster mommy
These guys are amazing. The great and the small. I love it when Ghandi is first introduced to Bulera(I think that's her name?) Not only did she immediately bond with him but you can tell she was ready to mother him because he sat down and she stayed low getting to him so she wouldn't scare him. Then she did the most beautiful thing. She gently patted his little back instead of grabbing him. Just a subtle way of saying I like you. I think that's pretty close to human and it shows connection, emotion and acts of affection! I could watch great apes all day!💞🐵😇💜
Such a beautiful story. Gorillas are the absolute best and they love hard just like us ❤🦍❤🦍
Bravo aux soigneurs c'est formidable ce que vous faites pour ces êtres magnifiques. Les gorilles nous donnent des leçons de vie.
I absolutely love her nose print!! She is so beautiful both mom and baby 😍😍
Congratulations on a great job and a loving surrogate gorilla family.
Oh my . Great and happy ending for this beautiful girl. Thank you all for taking care of her.
That beautiful little happy face! Omg...
I love these happy endings. I would love to work in a primate sanctuary
🇨🇦 sooo would I! What a dream job! I love Gorillas so much!
When I was a PhD student I. Primatology I studied in Borneo and Sumatra with the Orangutans and Macaques and their behavior patterns, that was 25 years ago and I haven't regretted it since. I would love to go back and study Gorillas especially the Mountain Gorillas and the Bonobo. It saddens me how uneducated people treat primates and how important they are to ecology and to the world. There is nothing more beautiful than a new mother looking at her young or in this case her surrogate baby.
So adorable
What a wonderful story 👌🥰🙏 Blessings and love to all.
Great job keepers👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻. She is beautiful and happy🥰
Oh…my heart.
🇨🇦🙋❤️🤗 Hello from Ontario Canada. I'm a new subscriber and just watched my 1st video and loved it! This little baby Gorilla is absolutely precious! It really is too bad that her mother never tried to bond with her but I'm sooo happy and grateful that yous were able to get a surrogate for her and that new mommy, daddy, brother and the whole family loves and very much accepts her! I'm really looking forward to the next video of these beautiful Gorillas that I will see. I'm excited to be following along to see how things progress with this family! Thank you so much to the makers and sharing this wonderful video! Gorillas have always been my favorite animal of all! 🦍 ❤️🙏👍😇
“Showing her the world.”
Good luck and best wishes!

Stupendo! 😍
Soooooo sweet😂👍
So will babys mum be allowed to mate again or will her deafnast, interfere with her looking after the baby’s .
Hi Nam, I do agree Sun could manage better with a slightly smaller bottle.
Thank you ❤😊 xx
Zoos are so quick to pull infants from mothers - I think Jacksonville has had the same 'emergency' with other baby gorillas.
Great video, but I am not sure why Bulera is called the "surrogate" mother and not "foster" or "adoptive"? Doesn't "surrogacy" means only carrying a child for someone and not bringing this child up? I notice this usage of "surrogate" term sometimes, but seems like an incorrect term in such a context.
Hi there! This is a great question. "Surrogate" actually means "substitute" so it contextually works as Bulera is acting as Gandai's mother. Hope this helps!
Hermosos bebés 🦍🦍🦍🦍🦍🦍🦍🦍🦍🦍🦍🦍🦍
Who is feeding the baby since is not the mother?
Maybe y'all could help out Zookeeper Chad in Australia who is hand-raising a baby gorilla and posting videos of himself and the baby all over his social media accounts (even though plenty of research advises against depicting primates in a way that could be construed as pet-like). Chad seems to need some help.
