Allah guides he who wants to be guided, in the Quran in Arabic it's written in a way that can be understood both ways, the first as you explained the second as I described. The problem with the first is that it suggests that Allah may have favouritism, which goes against him being just and fair to all mankind. Furthermore I like the second understanding of the verse more, because basically it says seek the truth honestly and ask Allah for guidance and he will deliver. There's a lot of evidence for this premise in everyone's lives especially when it comes to becoming a Muslim, every revert story I saw , people have spoken about a moment where they truthfully and honestly asked Allah for a sign and that sign was delivered not long after every single time. But you've never heard about a person who went to sleep as a disbeliever and woke up as a believing Muslim. So that's why I'm leaning more towards the second understanding of the verse. Moral of the story: we should tend to our hearts first, get them straight leaving all prejudice and dishonesty behind and when we're ready ask Allah to show us the truth we seek. And that applies to any truth we seek not just if Islam is true or not. It could be if we should stay in our jobs or leave , or if we should marry a certain person or not... You get the point 😊. People become Muslims only if we practice Islam.
Unfortunately, we Muslims have set a very wrong example in representing Islam.
Palestinians have beautifully demonstrated that Islam provides strength and inner peace no matter what situation people are in.
