  • In this video, we take a look at the Sharp PC-5741 386 laptop from 1990. I show how to view images on it using LXPIC and view webpages in text mode with a serial connection to a Raspberry Pi.

Man, I miss by 5700. I had one in 1995 that my cousin traded to me for a bicycle. It worked great as a portable laptop (it weighed 10 pounds) before the hinge to the screen broke. I had the 387 co processor and a 2400 baud modem. Many college papers and bbs surfing was done on my laptop. Thank you for the memories of the what we called the Star Trek laptop.

That’s actually a very nice sharp screen. What impresses me is the almost instant boot up. Thinking back the world should have stayed with light and fast DOS pc’s or something like eg GEOS, or that nice DOS shell that HP had on their palmtops, instead of the years of awful suffering we went thru with Windows 3 and 95. Remembering those 10 minute boot up times on my corporate notebook that cost 4000 USD.

Holy crap that photo download though. Is 9600 the best the Sharp can do?
