  • Wow, I can't believe it's already been three years since my last UA-cam video! A lot has happened since then, but for the most part, I have been busy creating new prints. You can check them out at / maarit.hanninen .
Last year, I moved from my small home studio to my own atelier-a creative getaway situated in the last remaining farmland in Amsterdam. The new space offers room for a bigger press, and in this video, you'll get a glimpse of both the atelier and the press.
Join me as I create my latest linocut print, "From The Ashes." Inspired by the mythical phoenix bird and the transformative times we've all experienced, this print captures the essence of growth and renewal. At 42 x 59.4 cm (16.5 x 23.4 in), it's my largest print to date.
I'll also share some exciting new techniques, including how to transfer an image using a laser printer, sticker backing paper, and Mod Podge or acrylic matte medium. Plus, I'll show you how to fix small carving mistakes using epoxy putty like Milliput.
I hope you enjoy watching the process! If you'd like to get your hands on one of these prints, they're currently available on my website at maarithanninen.com/. Thank you for your support!

The original edit had much more carving, but I felt like it was too much. It might be just because it's my own work and I'm more self-conscious about it 😅 But I will keep your feedback in mind for the next time. It helps a lot!

Also loved the video. Also love more carving. Also your previous pieces (unless I'm mistaken) were hand drawn(?). This gave a much more organic feel to the line. Love your work. Glad you're back

@@MaaritHanninen, if you still have the original (long version), go ahead and post both videos (the long and short) and ask the viewers which they like. Then you won't be guessing, the viewers will tell you either in the comments or the views. ... If you don't have the long version, next project post both (a long and short) versions. 💖🌞🌵😷

@@axlbernard hand drawing on a tablet eliminated tracing the image with carbon paper on to the linoleum and then retracing the image with sharpie so it can be seen whilst carving... Saving hours. I'm not sure drawing on paper vs drawing on a tablet made a difference, as l like this one, but if the artist agrees, one option would be to draw on paper and then scan the image into the computer for printing on sticky paper. 💖🌞🌵😷

Could you please make a video review on the ink rollers ? After years of practice, what is your favorite brand ? Do you prefer to work with hard or soft ink rollers ? Your opinion would be very useful 🙂

Thank you so much! There's beauty in a simple process. It feels organic and gives character to the artwork. A press is certainly a big help if you make large editions, but as long as you enjoy your process, that is all that matters! :)

What was the Milliput Putty for? A repair of a mistake? I have used epoxy putty. Very difficult, and doesn't always work. Or was there another reason?

Oh gosh I love seeing the whole working process so much. I'm stuck in the biggest art block ever but seeing others create is gonna pull me out of it in the near future, I can feel it & your prints are gorgeous ☺️ oh and Such a great idea to fix mistakes with a bit of epoxy putty! Genius!
Can I ask what ink or paint you use to stain the block? And do you clean it off after cutting the board (and how?) I used to use orange acrylic paint but not sure how it holds up with the transfer method & I can't really clean it of the lino afterward. Oh & I've been curious for ages: Is there a specific reason you use black for staining your block cause the print is also black? Waving at you from the Netherlands 😁

    • @MaaritHanninen
      @MaaritHanninen  11 місяців тому +3

I'm glad to hear this video helped a bit. It's not fun being stuck in a creative block. I use India ink for staining, and it comes off with rubbing alcohol. I use black because it's less distracting next to the transferred image

Hi! I'm teaching myself printmaking and your videos have been really helpful in understanding the process, so thank you.
I was wondering what kind of paper you printed your image onto? I saw sticker backing paper in the description but not sure what this is. Is there another name for this kind of paper, or where do you purchase it? I currently use carbon paper to transfer my sketches but it is messy and inaccurate. Thanks :)

    • @AllIsWellaus

I think, purely an academic guess. I'm wondering if it's backing paper. It is used to hold stickers. The glossy paper underneath. So I tried printing using it. Wasn't particularly successful so when I saw that. I happily paid that person because he potentially saved time. I would be more than happy to pay you for some tips. I'm looking for something better as the backing paper wad a bit too successful. I think some of the toner came off during the printing cycle. It has been paying up since. It's a shame really because to have that detail like in Maarit's artwork here is a delight. Anyway I'll keep my eye's open.

If she’s using india ink to stain the block before she carves then probably is using rubbing alcohol to remove it.

For me, woodblock, linocut, etching and engraving, has always completely the work of my hands and mind. Of course, now 74, I was introduced to techniques long before electronic devices came into being. Printmakers and photographers were more skilfull 45 years ago.

My prints are completely the work of my hands and mind as well. The tools may have changed but that doesn't make today's artists less skilled than their counterparts 45 years ago
