Two-color Linocut Printmaking by Maarit Hänninen

- In this video I'll be showing you how I make a two-color linocut print using a simple registration jig. I will carve out a “key block”, use it to create my second color block, and make the two layers line up using just a few low-cost materials.
This method can be adapted to printing with more than two blocks, and it can also be used with other printmaking techniques, such as woodcuts.

Thank you very much David! 🙏❤️
Ah man the moment of pulling a print-- magical! I liked seeing your registration method, it's so simple and yet classy!
Jill C Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Every time you peel the paper back I swear it's magic.
In the process of making the linocut works she made an additional piece of art with the video
Thank you so much! I'll give my camera man/editor your compliments 😊
Oh wow so you print on the other lino!!! Get it! Gorgeous work,
Thank you for a wonderful video, Maarit. I am a young (just 71) artist now branching out into printmaking for the first time. I have to say that watching your videos and following how you do things makes it all very clear. It is all so very lucid and no commentary is required. I have learnt so much from your technique. Best wishes from Sweden. 😊👍🏻
Very happy to hear that the videos have helped you! Happy printmaking!
Good luck to you x
@@LoveJasmine348 Thank you, Jasmine, for your lovely and wonderfully inspiring comment. It means so much to me. I'm sending you a (virtual) hug. 😘x
wow! this is mesmerizing.
I’ve purchased several of her projects including her newest triptych. Her artwork always draws attention.
Jels.
I liked how you printed on the other block to allow you to carve exactly where you need to on the second block. Thanks for the tips!
Yeah that's a nice little technique. Gives the perfect registration.
@@MaaritHanninen I'm going to try this as soon as my lino block arrive from Amazon!
Thank you so much for sharing. I've learned more about lino cutting and block printing from your videos than I have with instructional videos
Wow that's amazing to hear! Although my goal has never been to make tutorials, I want to show my process in a clear enough manner so that people can still follow what I'm doing. Glad to hear it's working :)
That so smart! I want to a lino cut with 4 colors. Didn't think to make a print to make a guide for the other blocks!
I've been an artist for 40 years, and it's amazing how much I still don't know. Thanks and bravo.
Lovely video. Thanks for sharing your process.
Just watching someone else make prints has taught me so many new techniques! I can't wait to try them out on my current work in progress
this is truly magical. i must admit, i fell in love not only with your art but also with how aesthetically pleasing the process of creating it is captured. thanks so much for sharing, i can't get enough of your videos!
Thanks, so nice to hear :) Will try to start working on the next one soon.
My feeling too! I had never heard of the technique and I'm just mesmerised. Those designs are just incredible.
Amazing! So calming and super informative!
Tessax92 good to hear! Thank you!
The white border between the black and blue was a very nice touch.
*Impressive skills.* Very different from the digital printing.
She could build a nice business around her prints. Good Luck wonderful artist !
Очень красивая и аккуратная работа! Браво! Процесс как медитация...
This reminds me the old art of lithography and xylography!
one of the most satisfying things I've ever seen TBH
Wow, I love your method. Maybe I'm a dunderhead but never thought of printing straight onto the second block as a template. Many people show creatively destroying their single block in phases, which never set right with me, or some other method. Thanks
Nice to see someone who does everything right - great job :D
Oh, you're too kind! I still learn so much every day.
LOVING this channel Maarit!
Thankyou for the calm! This was so delightful to watch.

I don’t know why my brain has NEVER processed to use a proofing print to TRANSFER THE IMAGE ONTO ANOTHER LINOLEUM BLOCK!
Your video has opened my eyes to a new and wonderful method! Thank you!
Glad to hear! It's a neat little trick.
It's truly lovely and calming to see this process and of course the result was fantastic!

Wonderful video, Maarit! 😊
Nadia Rausa thank you Nadia!
thank you very much! this is extremely helpful!
In reference to Linsey’s question to me about fabric inks, I have the same difficulties in coverage when printing on textiles. It takes a lot of ink and often requires lifting the print carefully in place and re-inking. The more texture, the more difficult. Like papers, fabrics absorb ink differently. When trying to cover large areas with solid color, I finally decided to work with the characteristics of the fabric, letting the weave come through where it wanted to. Even so, I always launder the fabric to remove any finishes to remove any finishes. The inks I use are all oil based relief inks, both Gamblin and Caligo. Gamblin makes one specifically for fabric called Drive By Black but it comes only in black and I haven’t tried it yet.
Thank you so much for sharing your process. Love your work!
Thank you for the video, the print is amazing and even the chosen soundtrack is wonderful!

Excellent video! And after watching it for the second time, I realized that the music was not off-putting :) Seriously, making a video like this is an art form in itself, requiring utmost restraint against "explaining".

Absolutely beautiful 😍
Sublime :) thank you for sharing
Thank you Sarah! That's lovely to hear :)
oooooohhhhhh this is gorgeous and really makes me want to explore this method of art making
Thank you :)
I'll bet you could make a nice, sturdy hinged frame for you to slide your papers into when you print, so that there would be less buckling when you flip it over your lino. Maybe like two of those large photo mats that you can sandwich your paper into. You could hinge those at the side and the openings would be ample to get your baren in and around for printing.
I always think of that when I am printing on my gel plate, but I've yet to do it! I thought of alternatives, like perhaps lining the two frames with a rubberized surface so the paper doesn't go sliding and securing with binder or bulldog clips.
I'd love to have a go at lino. I have been a "Jaqueline of all trades", as far as art goes. I would like to try it all before I die! Linocut/woodcut printing, sculpting, lampwork bead making/small-scale glass blowing and pottery are on my short list to dabble in. There are many more that I would tackle, if I live that long.
If I'm not clear, I mean those heavy card mats that go around photos or artwork inside the frame. You know the type, hopefully.
I thought of how one keeps their embroidery linens taught while working cross stitch and needlepoint...working on an embroidery hoop.
I don't think they make square ones, but it might be something similar with the photo mat set-up.
I've seen people use something similar to what you described. So many techniques out these, and indeed, so many mediums 😄
this is beautiful!! thank you so much for sharing.
You're such a pro! This was a great video, and I loved the design you made. Did you glue your lino to wooden blocks? If so what is the purpose of this please?
