@DavidGSPIELMAN
hear hear. Shocking is all too easy you're right, and is seemingly being used more and more as a way of getting noticed. Good to hear from a true man of the old school style of photography and art in general.
thankyou.
The first time I watched this video was about two years ago. Just come across it today again, I want to say Thank you to David, this clip was the one of the main reason that made me acquire Leica M8 and sold all other gears and it made me very happy since then.
I had been looking for a good analogy to explain why I shoot film. You gave it simply and beautifully. Thanks for this inspiring and beautiful video.
My favourite vid on the whole of UA-cam! Many thanks for your efforts in making this, in a relaxed mode you have poured out your soul and inner feelings on why you love photography and importantly why you use a Leica.
Love my M6 ..... but really LOVE my M2 much, much more. Again, many thanks for your inspiration!
Just got my first Leica, M3 with 50mm 2.0 summitar. Love B&W . Some of your pictures make me jump out of my seat.
Beautiful put short film, I really need it this. Thanks.
i always watch this video when i need some spirit for shooting ~ i love this video!! thx david!
"one isn't right and the other wrong, they're just different"
I strongly agree with you David, nice video!!
Mr. Spielmann......... I LOVE THIS VIDEO!!!
Wonderful M6,the best Camera ever made!
Brilliant Photographs......
Thanks!!!
You are such an inspiration, David Spielman! I too shoot film; and use digital as well. Thank you for inspiring me..
I have often been asked why I still take film. Your comparison between a Steinway or keyboard explains this perfectly . Thanks
@DavidGSPIELMAN
Thank you so much, also thanks for posting the video
I am just age of 19, I haven't experienced lots of thing
but your video inspired me what is photography truly is
Once again, thank you
Don't know how I miss this on UA-cam but this is very beautiful and inspiring !
ZoneIII, let me assure you these are my words and there is no endorsements from Leica but yes a heart felt endorsement of Leica. Certainly I offer high praise for their equipment, as it let's me expand my vision and allows me to shoot quietly. The reason the Leica gets the mention is that the range finder is special and so different from a SLR, small, quiet and isn't overpowering. Leica's optics are simply the best. You are correct it is a tool but oh what a tool!
I completely agree with and relate to everything you said in this video.
David, that is a lovely account: superbly shot, your narrative is great, the music very nicely matched. I found it most intriguing and absorbing to watch and listen.
Thankyou, and I wish you all the very best from England.
I'm all digital, but your (very soothing!) video makes me want to go out n about with my M4-2 again.
Great little video. Thanks David.
Hey, and for those who can't afford a Leica (most people), don't hesitate to get an old film rangefinder camera. Canonets, Hi-Matics, Electros, etc......... many of them have outstanding lenses and offer a unique style of photography. I have several, and love them all. Small, light, quiet, simple, and even the full automatic models allow you to focus on what is most important, composition.
Very nice video indeed, quite unusual for UA-cam...
I wish you a lot of success and pleasure in your work, David. Your approach to photography reminds me of Ronis, the great humanist french photographer.
fantastic
Thanks for the update, wonderful work you are doing. Keep shooting. All the best!
Master Spielman i to am a Leica fanatic but sadly i can't afford one =( i wanted to say this was beautifully done and thank you from sharing.
Magic, tks for sharing, fine work, keep up yr art photography,
who plays this sublime music, many tks!
Thank you so much for the video
it inspired me a lot and touches my heart
it tells me what a true photography is
Once again, thank you.
This is a beautiful little clip David. Your work is wonderful. I love the Musee D'Orsay image. That is one of my favorite museums. It's funny how many of my clients gravitate to my M6 images when I mix them up with the digitals. I think shooting film in addition to digital makes me a better photographer in general. Reminds me of the importance of pressing that shutter at the right moment.
so, so good vid! everything what david spielman says about leica, i feel exactly the same.. it is totally different from dslr-shooting, and i also shoot with dslr, but.. when i am on the road with my leica, everything feels different... THX for posting this vid!
Subscribed. In 2022 hope to see more videos.
Thats awesome man your what I aspire to be not really a photographer, but a momentographer
You're my idol David!
Brilliant David - Very well executed! Love you view of the world! Would love to get in touch... Your words describe a very similar experience to my history of photography
I started to get serious in photography when I'm 15 years old
Veri nice!
Thank you, in some ways it does feel like an ad for Leica but who says that's a bad thing Leicas are amazing tools and a tool must inspire confidence in the artist. I am 26 and I grew up on digital mostly but I like to shoot 1:1 but full frame DSLRs never inspired confidence for me in street and art photos. I borrowed an M6 from a friend and I was hooked, now I am saving for the M7.Maybe I can get an M9 in a couple years when the price drops, but the film Leica gives many 1:1 DSLRs a run around.
I'm a analog photographer too. I shoot wit a Rolleiflex and Nikon GE. I love it! I believe the art of photography is in the darkroom. The up and coming young people don't even know basics like apatite and shutter speed and the ability to shoot with confidance without looking at the display, to make sure it's good. How sad. The exciting part of shooting film is the whole process. Today's photographer consider this a laborious burden. Keep up the great work and keeping photography an art.
yeah I'm sure they dont know apatite! i sure dont, printing is indeed a very special part of photography but i believe to say that its is where the art of the medium is just plain wrong
Scarrlet Witch Oh believe me, the youngsters know "apatite" alright, my kids eat me out of house and home every week.
Just stumbled upon this video and I was quite surprised when I saw your name on it. It's a nicely done video and quite inspiring.
Surfing through UA-cam paid off :) See you soon at the gallery.
Peace
wonderful
Please, I agree 100%, it doesn't mater what kind of typewriter Hemingway used, now does it? The gear only helps you complete your vision. Thanks for your kind words. Keep shooting. David
What a convincing advertisement for Leica.
Thanks for the note! I always carry three lens, 35mm, 50mm, 135mm. That really covers every thing I need to do. I also keep two bodies in my bag as well. My gear is always with me. All the best....
beautiful
My thoughts exactly!! Here, take a Leica.
Hasselblad is great camera, they are bigger and harder to load than a Leica. Having said that some photogs will only shoot Blads. Once you get the hang of loading them you shouldn't have a problem. It is all about what you want to shoot and how, I can't answer that for you. Blads and Leica are the very best, can't go wrong with either. All the best!
Thanks for the complement, I think, wasn't aware there were any photos of Socrates! What do I know.... All the best!
the best ever!
Have the same combo except my Summicron 50 is an earlier version (from 1970). Gonna add another M6 soon! Liked the vid. RF FTW!
@LAURAPHONE
Sergio, share with me more about the video, thanks for your kind words...
what lens do you use most often? If I were to carry it around the streets taking pictures of buildings, people, and cultural activities, and I want to travel light with one or 2 lens, which ones would you recommend?
Very inspiring video! I can't help but watch if over and over again. You say around 2:05 that your aim is to capture moments that should be recorded; in accordance with that do you go out and capture historic moments like a photojournalist? Do you photograph for more intimate reasons or to allow others to see your work?
tomalpphicon, it is really about analog vs. digital, Leica is my choice for shooting that way, thanks for your interest
Strange, I don't know who added the subtitles, but I guess they can spell. There are no subtitles when I view it. Sorry, again all the best! Where do you live? Maybe that may be the problem. Someone trying to help....
andysnap, Please remember Eric Clapton doesn't only play with an electric guitar, he uses both acoustic as well as electric. Please continue to shoot both. All the best and good shooting
@vgabrie Thanks for those kind words, please keep shooting!
Great Idea to make a short flick about yourself, did Leica sponsor this?
starwarscary. Thanks for the complement, I think, wasn't aware there were any photos of Socrates! What do I know.... All the best!
ive been shooting digital for some time now and decided to give film a try.
Old Leicas are not that expensive and for about the same price of a DSLR you can get quality bodies and lenses that will last quite some time.
It doesnt have to be the priciest lens, its luck and timing to be in the right spot and take the shot that counts.
good video
Nice hearing from you, No, Leica didn't sponsor the film. I've been shooting Leica's for over thirty years, they are a very important part of how I see and think about images. Equipment should be an extension of your eyes, mind and hands. In my work less is more. All the best!
Rorrt, thanks for you thoughts. "if art isn't provocative" isn't that is what Degas is saying, it doesn't matter what the producer of the art thinks but what it get the viewer to think and feel about it. Opens their eyes, mind and head. I don't think art is only about shocking the viewer, that is to easy. Getting someone to ponder and explore is a greater challenge. Art is simple and can be very complex!
Tell me where you live, please. All the best!
Someone, PLEASE tell me what the background song in this video is. I'm dying to know.
Jonathan, sorry to disappoint, I'm still and will continue to shoot film. Eric Clapton hasn't given-up playing an acoustical guitar in favor of just the electric guitar. Most of my commercial work is digital but the personal work is still and will remain film. I want to have and keep a negative. Try as you might, when you hold a DVD up to the light you don't see an image. All the best!
subs is for subtitles :-) I noticed in the subtitles on the video that the last words written are: "truli rapresents our time - can you shit - there" from minute 2:16
I think is tha automatic sub-generator of google... but I don't know.
I was sure that it couldn't be made by the author :-)
There is the botton CC on the base down below the video on the play bar.
Anyways really good video indeed... and wondeful pictures.
Have a nice day, Guido
and also, can someone please tell me what is the name of this music is?
its beautiful also
Cool... maybe one day I shall do that too... :)
Look what Wim Wenders (Film Director)say about Leica here on You Tube,a beautiful video too- Link: Wim Wenders Movie for Leica Camera
This won't be of much help, it is from a royalty free file from Apple. The video producer found it!
@buettstube Thanks for the note, you are right, it doesn't mater. What kind of trumpet did Miles Davis play, his style and genius came through even though we don't know the maker of his horn. I can assure you he used the best. So, having said that I use Leica because I think it is the best, best lenses, best design and most importantly best for the type of photography I do. Good shooting and always strive for the best and to be the best!
Excellent video,David.I use (and will NEVER) be parted from my M4 and my III and to all those who moan and say Leicas are overrated then they should try taking one out for the day. They're expensive for a reason. They are not made of low grade materials in some factory in the far east knocking out thousands every day and their solidity imbues confidence.More confidence=better shots.Of course a picture from a Leica isn't much different to a Nikon/Canon lens etc? Hmm..really? People seem to forget a screen has a set number of pixels so of course it won't appear a great deal different but make a proper print and they might understand why Leica glass costs a lot more too.
germandude1982 Hope it is sooner than later, you will enjoy whenever you get one!
:D thats awesome ill start saving up for an m10 when it comes out im sure it'll be amazing
Seon:Thanks for your note and e-mail. Tough questions...Leica vs the other cameras. The short answer is, it doesn't really matter what type of camera you use. For example do you know what type of type writer Ernest Hemmingway used to write his great books? Of course not, it doesn't matter. The camera is a tool, it is your visual voice that is important. My visual voice comes through better with a Leica, that may not be what works for you. Keep shooting I like your work! All the best David
May i ask the name of the song?
@Minefieldz Thanks for your kind words, you can contact me at my website or e-mail.
All the best
SGR:
Thank you for the note, hope you are feeling well and getting better. Tell me where you live and something about your photography. More later, David
@bobsoltys Thanks for your note, good shooting!
All the best,
I just bought my m8. I will one day hand it to my son or grandson. I actually already handed my son (6) a rebel xt and 17-40L
Airkid, glad you liked my work, I'm sorry I don't know the name of the piece of music but if you write Phin Percy the videographer his email address appears at the end, I'm sure he can tell you. Again, thanks for your note.
All the best, David
An interesting video nicely shot, which is unusual for UA-cam! Anyway, Nice choice of camera and what looks like very impressive photography, I will certainly seek out some more examples of your work! I tend to use both digital and film, mainly due to the fact that digital is cheaper...BUT its not a patch on the results of film! My film camera of choice is not a Leica I'm afraid, but a Yashica minister 1, very old school, with certain aspects left to guess work and obviously experience, which is ideal for candid/ street shots ( too perfect and all emotion and feeling is lost ). Anyway, I wont add my link as I consider it rude, but if youd like to view some work of mine then just google my name with 'photography' at the end. Here's looking forward to seeing some more work of yours!
ayayalmighty: Simply, I want and try to capture events. They may be simple and everyday or sometimes they might be more important. I don't know what will become historical. The really good photo-journalist just shoot what is going and and what is happening in their lives. Many have assignments to cover critical events, wars, disasters, etc. I do some of that but mostly I try and photograph what is around me and what interests me. I do want others to see what I see and feel.
Paaaaaaaaaanda! He uses a Panda! :)
"... it doesn't really matter what type of camera YOU use." Says the Leica guy.
I never been accused of being bright but I could and would have done a better job on the translation! More later, David
some day i wil have a leica
m6 + 50 cron v3!
the panda m6 :)
@Leica4mi
Thank you for your kind words. I'm traveling to Paris today, where are you from? Go to my web site and write giving me your e-mail address. More later, David
Im sure he's switched to digital by now...
Dawid: No one disagrees with you, the camera doesn't make the image the photographer DOES! All pianos have 88 keys. Most agree Steinway makes the best. The piano does make the music the musician does. The piano, like a camera is just the tool. "Fetish" are you kidding me, Leica invented the range finder! Their quality is and has been the bench mark by which others are judged. For me and many others it is about quality. For my craft I want to use the very best tools! So I use Leica's.
... good video but strange subs, especially the last words ...
Blood pressure dropped .. at age 15?
If only I had the money for a leica :(
Star war he's ancient Greek
Socrates, you are probably the last person on earth who thinks that...I would have though a great thinker like "Socrates" would know better. Go to any of the museums around the would, Paris, Rome, Berlin, London, America, etc., and go in and look at their collections of "craft photography."
Confused, "subs" are you talking about sandwiches, underwater boats? With a camera I try and do what poets, writers, song writers do. Observe and take note. Some do it with brushes, pens, typewriters, computers and me I use a camera. All the best.
you look like socrates.
Socrates, your are probably that last person on earth who thinks that...I would have though a great thinker like "Socrates" would know better. Go to any of the museums around the would, Paris, Rome, Berlin, London, America, etc., and go in and look at their collections of "craft photography."
Tristambeow... For the record, what is your point, impress me with images, not your grocery list of equipment, please. So Steinway pianos and Martin guitars, analog anything is "sentimental hogwash?" There are many out there who will disagree with you. Maybe your to young or I'm to old to know for sure but I will let my work, books, sales and assignments speak for me. All the best! David
I wish I could be handed a leica :(
The quote dont make sence because is art is not what u see and its what you make others to see than when people see what u make then is not art loool
So, keeping with you logic, writers who write longhand or even with a type writer are also stooges? Painters who don't use computers are dumpster divers of the past?
Photography isn't only one type of camera or technology, but many, left to the individual to choose and use how ever they want. I can only imagine your naive observation come from knowing little about art and art history.
photography is a craft not an art
for the record, i have four leicas; 2 m3s, 2 m6s, a mamiya 7, a contax t3, a nikon f, canon f1, nikon f3 and 7 others...but my canon 5d with all my L primes blows these out of the water. all this film worship is sentimental hogwash
