  • Welcome to a 3 part series on Jerry Sloan's offensive system that made the late 90s Utah Jazz a force. In this video, we cover the basic Flex Action that helped Karl Malone get post position while opening up jump shots for shooters, as well as Sloan's UCLA series to generate layups and jumpers.
Stick around for part 2, which covers Split Action that was recently used a ton by the Golden State Warriors dynasty.

This is excellent! For a casual viewer, I’m a big fan of the pacing in your videos when explaining each play.

I appreciate your input because a lot of the time I have no idea if people prefer me to go faster or slower or gloss over details or go really into detail. Thanks man!

Fantastic. Utah Jazz in the 90s had most efficient offense in the league (at least in the regular season). This is so easy to follow and understand, it's hard to say just thank you. Thank you!

this offense would be exploited in the modern era where guys are used to defending these basic action's

@@ryanr20091 it's a different game now. Now, everyone would just leave Ostertag to shoot because he can't, which Bulls actually did and that's why they were ahead of time.

@@Kodreanu23 Ostertag wouldn't even be in the game today the jazz would probably have malone at center . You literally couldn't play him because he couldn't shoot and took up space that kind of Bigs don't exist anymore.
You can't just be 7 feet tall anymore with no skills and that's what I couldn't stand about 90s big men at least most of them not all. It's like they only were playing in the game because they were tall.
Even a guy like Luc Longley would not be able to play now with virtually no use full attributes outside of maybe of good screen here and there lol

Great video! Jerry Sloan really does a great job here disguising actions and making them all transition seamlessly. Can't wait to watch the next two videos.

Fantastic breakdown! One interesting observation is how quickly the point guards looked for the wing entry and proceeded to play off-ball (UCLA cuts, setting rip screens etc) Some of the things Stockton did (off ball wise) is very similar to what Curry has been doing! Was this a popular way for point guards to operate back in the 90s?

Great point about Curry! He sets a ton of off ball screens which really is what is key in getting him open. I’m not really too sure on your question, but I feel like back in the 90s the point guards were more focused on passing into the post and facilitating via passing vs screening, but I could be wrong

Do you think this offense could still work in today’s nba, or is the game to fast paced for this now?

There are a lot of elements still used today. It is still a good offense but the shot distribution would need more threes to be modern
