something I enjoy in DDL interviews is that he realizes that the (very sincere) things he says can sound very pretentious so he cautiously says them with some shyness, but still gets it out
Very interesting video. Thank you for posting! :) Just a small note...it's cute how petite Sally Field is...I can't stop thinking ...Sally and the 7 giants :D
No, it isn't because I'm 29 and I've fell for him since I saw him last year in Phantom Thread. I'd marry him right now!!! I LOVE DANIEL INSANELY, MY GOD❤❤❤❤💘💘💘💘
This is a fantastic film. I'd love to see how comparable Daniel Day-Lewis's portrayal of Lincoln is to the real person; I bet it's pretty close! And Sally Field's performance was absolutely amazing. Same with Tommy Lee Jones and many others. One of Spielberg's best and that is saying a lot!
Spader was great, too. Straihand? is perfect in the role of Seward, a much neglected historical figure. Can’t help thinking how events would have transpired with him as President. Maybe no end to slavery.
It's funny that as I was watching Lincoln that I had to keep telling myself that this is an exceptional actor portraying President Lincoln and not Abraham Lincoln himself, there are alot of great films that I love watching but I have to give credit to the whole cast, crew and support people of this movie, the writers and producers and the director of this film for putting me in 1865 to experience the passion, history and significance of the time; I thank you all for the superb job you've done I believe it's the best movie I've ever seen.😊
Damnit I'd love to see DDL and Christian Bale starring opposite each other. Perhaps even as family members or something. That would be 'method madness'.
something like the rivalry of Jackman and Bale in The Prestige. It would be my dream come true: two of my favorite actors (Bale and Day-Lewis) together in a film.
Really sorry that we didn’t hear really anything from David Strathairn except that the questioner answered the question. Would have loved to hear him talk about the experience of playing SOS Seward and working every day with Abraham Lincoln.
Would also have liked a little more focus on Grant. Liberals need to revive his reputation. He failed as a President basically because of his lack of political skills, but he remained one of the greatest figures in the world between 1865 and 1885. His funeral parade in NYC remains the greatest in American history. As immense as Churchill ’s in London in 1965/
What most people don't realize is that not only does DDL in costume bear a remarkable resemblance to Lincoln, but David Strathairn is amazingly like the character he plays, Seward. He brings to live the figure Kerns wrote about. It would be interesting to see him do a bio pic of Seward.
+cyberlucy William H. Seward is probably one of the most underrated American political figures in history. At the 1860 Republican National Convention, Seward was actually the front runner for the Nomination. Despite losing the nomination Seward went on the serve as Lincoln's Secretary of State as well as his successor's Andrew Johnson. Today I doubt many people will know who he is.
i was distracted with him in that role...he kept reminding me of Pierce Patchett, the eccentric heroin-sniffing millionaire from L.A. Confidential. I felt like Secretary of State Seward had a part time job running whores that were cut to look like movie stars.
DDL is in a far more superior league to Bale, Gosling or Cooper. They would need to seriously up their game if they were to going to act opposite him. I can tell you for a fact that Cooper would kiss DDL's ass throughout production. In interviews he goes on about how he thinks DDL is the best actor etc. From an actors standpoint, he's infatuated with DDL
I wish actors had more time to rehearse. As big as the budget was how much money certain people made. They could’ve allowed three or four weeks of practice for the actors
It's a little exaggerated imo, but I'll still say I agree for the sake of argument. Although you might not've meant to imply I said this, still I wanna point out I never meant to say Bale was as good as DDL is. All I was saying is that I'd really like for them to work together on something. Regardless of how lonely the peak DDL is at might be, Bale is still a brilliant actor in his own right as far as I'm concerned.
Or do yourself a favor and go watch The Machinist, The Prestige, The Fighter, Rescue Dawn, American Psycho and even Empire of the Sun. Actually, his portrayal of Bruce Wayne/Batman was a great level of acting itself. But of course, you might be one of those narrow minded people who can't look past an unconventional outfit. Bale's making his second film with both Terrence Malick and David O. Russell - but of course, their judgement of actors is probably terrible... Silly me.
1 Bale has an oscar. 2 He should've has two already. 3 Gary fucking Oldman DOESN'T have an Oscar (Oscars say little). 4 You're obviously not familiar with Bale's body of work. 5 Many actors he's worked with including some of the greatest have praised him exceptionally, as have done director's. Bale is one of the best actor's of his generation, and if you disagree you're probably going to end up in the vast minority on that one. Do with that what you will.
When Steven started talking at 12:00 about casting 145 speaking parts I got so irritated lol. I’m just so stinking irritated that poor Sally (who is a living legend and and multi academy award winner) had to fight for this role. I’m so irritated 😂🤦🏻♀️- Idk I guess maybe it’s bc I’m a woman. I feel the weight of it. There is absolutely no reason why Sally had to fight for this role, it’s appalling.
Hardly anyone in the audience knew anything about Seward the man. A much overlooked political figure. Down played because he took Johnson’s side, Nearly died from the assassination attempt that night. Hd he been untouched he probably would have saved Johnson from many mistakes in the summer and fall of 1865.
I feel this is very sad, An Academy Award Winning Actress twice by the way, has to test for a role that had been promised , and the lead man gets a year off to find the role? Stinks
i think it has very little to do with their gender and more with the fact that Spielberg said in an interview with Oprah that he and Day Lewis had already talked a lot about his role in the movie 9 years before they even started the production
I like David Strathairn as an actor but behaves like he’d rather be anywhere but here. Given one question that he whiffed, never given another one. On the other hand, James Spader made the absolute most of his 5 minutes here!
So haven't ALL other actors who work opposite DDL. I guess that means DDL can never act opposite anybody anymore. I never said Bale was as good as DDL is. But to call Bale an average actor, that's a statement you're gonna find opposition to with many, many great filmmakers and actors. Bale's Oscar is the final proof of that. Have your opinion, I don't care. I'm gonna care about the opinion of professionals, and most of all what I myself see, which is one of the best actors of his generation.
His portrayal of batman could have been played the same by an 8 year old with a dumb voice. In fact, Heath Ledger made Bale look like an amateur in the Dark Knight. You could really see the difference between average and great acting. No matter how you spin it, he's not on Lewis' level. Bale has never played ANY role as challenging and controversial as Daniel's portrayal of Brown in my left foot. Bale has never played an iconic role like Lincoln.
The war was never really about slavery. A moral cause to go to war is always necessary. The real issue was a matter of stolen properties in the Southern states similar to what more recently occurred in Korea and Vietnam.
I fell in love with the character of Lincoln as portrayed by DDL. What a guy! What a person!
I much prefer Bill the Butcher
Are you sure you didn't fall in love with DDL? ;)
Owen Daniels yes Bill the Butcher is my favorite too! He’s so sexy. 😍
D D Lewis is so honest
He really wanted to feel the character and grow in to the role
DDL's description of finding a character's voice is fascinating.
He’s simply fascinating
Lincoln is and probably would be the best movie for me. There is something so seamless the way Daniel day Lewis carried this role.
hi, are u still there?
something I enjoy in DDL interviews is that he realizes that the (very sincere) things he says can sound very pretentious so he cautiously says them with some shyness, but still gets it out
Sally Field looks damn good for her age. As does Day-Lewis for that matter.
Stunning cast
Awesome! And that's an understatement. The work of many people, but always, always remember it begins with the writer.
A magnificant movie and cast..
I've been looking all over for this. Thank you for uploading.
WONDERFUL PEOPLE, ❤FANTASTIC MOVIE 🎬🎥 GREAT EPOS 👏👏👏👏👏👏 THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR " LINCOLN "
What a great interview. Thank you.
Very interesting video. Thank you for posting! :)
Just a small note...it's cute how petite Sally Field is...I can't stop thinking ...Sally and the 7 giants :D
is it weird that I'm a 20 year old girl and I'm totally obsessively in love with him .. I find him handsome as hell
Gross and I am a 53 year old woman.
I'm 21 and I feel the same way lol
No, it isn't because I'm 29 and I've fell for him since I saw him last year in Phantom Thread. I'd marry him right now!!! I LOVE DANIEL INSANELY, MY GOD❤❤❤❤💘💘💘💘
Are ya'll talking about Abe Lincoln?
Julieta I’ve been in love 😍 DDL since eight grade so don’t feel badly. He’s just so sexy.

Daniel is possibly the best actor in history!
Yep with Marlon Brando
It's funny that as I was watching Lincoln that I had to keep telling myself that this is an exceptional actor portraying President Lincoln and not Abraham Lincoln himself, there are alot of great films that I love watching but I have to give credit to the whole cast, crew and support people of this movie, the writers and producers and the director of this film for putting me in 1865 to experience the passion, history and significance of the time; I thank you all for the superb job you've done I believe it's the best movie I've ever seen.😊
You'll never look at a $5 bill the same way again after watching 'Lincoln'.
Great actor

something like the rivalry of Jackman and Bale in The Prestige. It would be my dream come true: two of my favorite actors (Bale and Day-Lewis) together in a film.
Amazing questions
That would be amazing but I'm afraid that the world would implode with all that awesomness;)
Daniel Day Lewis great actor

@@JRobbySh- Read Ron Chernow’s biography.
Lincoln, a hero
Lee Pace is an underrated performer
Give him time. He’s on track for big big stardom
RE 47:00 - Well, Spielberg's made the musical. Now we just need the Western from him.

Not commercial, but I would like to see a mini-=series on Reconstruction
God touch him...and you feel the talent.
the biggest daniel fan but despite knowing his quality i find it hard to believe looking at him up there that that is Bill 'The Butcher' Cutting.
BEAUTEEM I know right? He’s so different in all his roles.
He’s the GOAT
that is the biggest theater screen i have ever seen
Love Spielberg. -- Who doesnt?...
Me

Rampage Clover Bale is actually close
I believe Mr Strathairn is underrated as an actor.
All star panel. Exactly who I would have picked. Would be nice to have Joseph Gordon-Levitt but honestly I’d take these guys first. Fantastic.
And Tommy Lee
@@carlrosendorf5210 that’s true. The one that got away
@31:09 does Lee Pace fall asleep? 🧐😂
Yaaaaaaaaaazzzzzzzzzzzz 😴
I'm a big fan of DDL and the Lincoln can't wait for the DVD but how in the hell did I get here from watching SHARk attack videos : / ? Lol
I needs copy of this movie. I not seen it all. I like to think it be great to see Mary Todd as a great supportive wife.
DANIEL....l Lincoln is smiling down on you.
Was the camera man filming from atop his pogo stick or what? Paul Greengrass would love this.
Geniuses
I wish actors had more time to rehearse. As big as the budget was how much money certain people made. They could’ve allowed three or four weeks of practice for the actors
Where is Eric McDaniel? He was a part of this!
Same with Tommy Lee Jones.
Schedule?
So Spielberg wants to make a western?

My goodness, the moderator is inept. It's a horrible shame, the cast and producers he's interviewing have produced a work of absolute genius.
Other comments disagree with you, friend. But each to their own.
37:30 🙌🙌🙌
All of those performances, although great, put together still aren't a spot on a DDR performance. Which really shows his brilliance.
Or do yourself a favor and go watch The Machinist, The Prestige, The Fighter, Rescue Dawn, American Psycho and even Empire of the Sun.

Great talk, but the shakiness of the cameras was unnecessary and distracting, almost dizzying.
Was James Spader going through some stuff back in 2013 or what ...? He looks totally out of it.
Those chairs look uncomfortable. Why was there not a table.
Also, I have back trouble...That is how he is reacting.
I have a terrible back. That’s how he’s squirming. He’s always polite.

Why would properties be stolen? FOR Cultivation of DRUGS OF COURSE.
it's an idea
Poor Strathairn only got to say like three words the whole time.

James Spader’s a dbag. His body language gives away his true character.

Couldn't they have laid off of the Bush bashing? This isn't politics here.
Spielberg is an American institution.
Not a very colorful bunch. All dressed in black, grey and brown. Interesting.
Great talent in an uncomfortable lineup. These interview setups are f'in horrible
Yeah, Christian Bale isn't fit to shine Lewis' shoes man. Lewis has 3 Oscars, Bale plays batman. Not even close.
Sally talks long for making it short!
Impossibly, sally field is even more verbose now...
