Even the ones that might be closest to at least the way he talks, like in age of innocence or the boxer. They are still very different.
The thing people might misunderstand about that kind of intense, all consuming acting, is you don't really need to have any back story. I get the impression they didn't "need" to talk about any of that too much, because it really comes down to the imagination. And the script. The script created the world they went into. In real life, people may act a certain way, treat people a certain way, without really knowing or remembering why they became the person they are. pretty much - he's a character who started out life with plenty of reason to be hateful and malicious and then the story walks us through each little moment that just continued to pile on until he succumbs to his own personal hell when he reaches the culmination of all of his life's ambition...... "i'm finished" that last line really nails it.
Adorable, huh??? One of the most endearing things about DDL is the way every one of his characters-even the darker ones-touch someone in the scene with compassion. The way he strokes H.W.’s face and kisses him seems like a bit of a window into DDL as a father in real life. Never mind the shooting and clubbing and knife throwing...DDL always comes across to me as SUCH a giving soul.
Yeah, but he’s nothing short of delightful. He really is trying so hard NOT to come off as self absorbed, when every question thrown at him is only to do with methods and intentions. He’s an artist. Period. “I don’t like to explain myself.”
I mean the process must be pretty much him just loving to think about every little detail about a character, everything from the voice, gestures, thinking of how you would like the character to react, trying it out by yourself, recording snippets etc. I imagine he engrosses himself in it, like candy for his imagination.
Can someone really tell why they are the way they are? No one knows for sure, the interviewer wanted a flash back to show Daniel parents beating him as a child to explain why he is like that in the movie. The characters that Paul created here aren't that simple. The dude killed his brother and his priest! If thats not info about the psychology of your character I dont know what is!
I'm glad someone mentioned the shirts. I feel like it was a fun goof they decided to have where they both agreed to wear the ugliest shirts they had lol Paul's looks like he stole it from a gay pirate and Daniel's a gift from a 102yo grandmother that lives in Oklahoma.

@@tonywords6713 Great insight. Thank you for sharing here.
pretty much - he's a character who started out life with plenty of reason to be hateful and malicious and then the story walks us through each little moment that just continued to pile on until he succumbs to his own personal hell when he reaches the culmination of all of his life's ambition...... "i'm finished" that last line really nails it.
Or he could be acting
Google it: "interview Fiona Apple about T.Anderson". Thank me later.
Not a nice story.
if you didn't learn that much about Daniel Plainview's psychology you didn't watch the same film as me
These poor guys seem like they just want to take a nap; I recommend the Charlie Rose interview...
This interviewer could do a spot on Terry Gross impersonation
No one's gonna mention how cute the Giant breakfast story is?
Adorable, huh??? One of the most endearing things about DDL is the way every one of his characters-even the darker ones-touch someone in the scene with compassion. The way he strokes H.W.’s face and kisses him seems like a bit of a window into DDL as a father in real life. Never mind the shooting and clubbing and knife throwing...DDL always comes across to me as SUCH a giving soul.
Those first couple of questions are horrific, especially the second. Did you even WATCH the movie?!
Ummm...ummm...uh....ummm....uh,uh uhuh....................................ummm."
-Daniel Day-Lewis
Yeah, but he’s nothing short of delightful. He really is trying so hard NOT to come off as self absorbed, when every question thrown at him is only to do with methods and intentions. He’s an artist. Period. “I don’t like to explain myself.”
DDL talked and talked but never really said anything. Not impressed.
DDL saying he's never watched Chinatown blew my mind
What he meant was he didn't watch it for the movie
This time he takes his hat off :D
33:19 Doesn't like to explain himself. Just like Daniel Plainview!
Absolutely true! He ( they) really don’t like to
40:32min Note to self (Debord-Lacan): Lipping the phonemes of "period" for there to be blood. Plenty gushing.
I mean the process must be pretty much him just loving to think about every little detail about a character, everything from the voice, gestures, thinking of how you would like the character to react, trying it out by yourself, recording snippets etc. I imagine he engrosses himself in it, like candy for his imagination.
Super cool
45:58min Ads for a Rubicon truck SUV.
Crowd questions elicit far greater responses by the interviewees than those from the abysmal interviewer.
Daniel Plainview wanted a milkshake
Sexiest man...Daniel’s brain is beautiful inside and out.
Wholeheartedly agree.
He’s amazingly brilliant.
you've inside his brain????
Can someone really tell why they are the way they are? No one knows for sure, the interviewer wanted a flash back to show Daniel parents beating him as a child to explain why he is like that in the movie. The characters that Paul created here aren't that simple. The dude killed his brother and his priest! If thats not info about the psychology of your character I dont know what is!
True, let the film speak for itself.
That DDL story about the breakfast in Giant is the most I've heard him speak
Daniel Day Lewis is the best actor in the world. And Leonardo Di Caprio. He deserves to win the Oscar. THE LAST MOHICANS
Daniel and Leo are no Percy Helton...but they are truly gifted actors !
I'm amazed at how ppl make speeches in the form of a question.
39:45 he does this same thing in the movie 😀
I'm glad someone mentioned the shirts. I feel like it was a fun goof they decided to have where they both agreed to wear the ugliest shirts they had lol
Paul's looks like he stole it from a gay pirate and Daniel's a gift from a 102yo grandmother that lives in Oklahoma.
And you've seen a gay pirate before? Or are you just some homophobic prick who thinks that 'gay' is funny?
I thought the opposite.
Fantastic .
That last part - find your rhythm - sublime.
You never know what is going to come out of DDLs mouth. His responses are surprising and very complex
The “fight scenes” 😭
Note to self (Debord-Lacan): "________ a life that is not repressed" metaphorical substitution live, and make of others not "explore" as in "It is the case I am not the object of said labor"
Why did he have to retire? Wish him all the best and a happy retirement, but dang I miss his work.
@Midgeon Mac false
Note to self (Debord-Lacan): Imaginary rupture against the prohibition returns in a dignified attempt at being able to challenge it. The tension of "Yes, no our partners in crime" (Master sig degree of imaginary rupture) Q: so, tell us more about the process A: "Ohh, yes where was I (hand laid upon brow) yes, well cannot tell you much about it really. Let me think, these things take such a long time, let us see, a metaphor, perhaps 2, and a few impressions on reflecting upon what I, we, our, partners in crime, never did, well it is not like, crime is a metaphor, for..."
It's not a note to self if you're posting it on a public forum
@@TypoDiabetes According to....? this need of yours I must satisfy?
DDL's closing statement is excellent although it doesn't apply to every type of actor. It does, however, apply to serious actors.
I love these two. Both so very brilliant. Fascinating.
But are they fucking serious with those shirts?
what happened to Daniel Day Lewis teeth? 20:30
it wasn't meant literally
Not his teeth he means the characters teeth
Paul Thomas Anderson looks quite a lot like Daman Albarn here (Singer ferom Blur & Gorillaz)
He does actually. You’re right
Wonder how many times someone has come up to Paul (Thomas) Anderson and said: "So when´s the next Resident Evil film coming?". :)
don't get it?
why?
Beacuse the guy who makes the Resident Evil-movies name is Paul Anderson.
Ha ha thats a good story.
They do a full scholarly historiography on these characters.
Where did he get his shirt tho?
¡M mm! Que hermoso hombre 🥰
There will be blood was nearly as good as Movie 43
this interviewer overthinks everything
Ah yesh, there is a star actor with the same name as me.
The idea that one does not learn about the main character, "at least not on a psychological level", is one of the most nonsensical things I have heard regarding this movie. Did she miss the entire opening sequence?
Inane questions
Sorry, you mispelled "insane". As in, insanely amazing questions!!!! Am I right!!
43:30 😂
Studies have show chewing increases concentration/focus he was probably doing it unconsciously
There are great similarities between the score in There will be blood and the score in Jan Troell's The Emigrants and The New Land
