Yea. I think what is happening is xbox relied too much on microsofts money.
I saw this video breaking down how profitable the xbox brand is and compared to microsofts other areas. Its one of the weakest. The xbox one wasnt as succesful as the 360 and the series consoles have not done well as they focus on game pass.
Which game pass itself is burning money
So i think all of this was fine since agian microsoft has money to burn. But it became an issue when they aquired activision and bethesda.
Now they burned mountains of money that microsoft has to get involved now and keep an eye on them and make decisions for them.
It sucks that the regular person is taking the hit for this.

If the Microsoft pc game store was actually functional game pass would probably be doing better. But previously their was clearly minimal allowance for Xbox to get actual stuff done on windows.

The reason xbox is always in last place is the same reason DCU loses to Marvel, trying to chase instant success instead of building and investing time into something. They still have jobs because the layoffs are good for business. It saves money. I think while Xbox hasn’t grown in sales, digital growth (money from activision, etc) grew slightly. So in terms of doing their job (making money) they are sort of doing their job. Next quarter, with these layoffs, any negative in revenue shouldn’t be as bad with less staff. They’ll continue to cut so they still in the positive. Their job isn’t to make sure staff have jobs, esp when the majority of the money makers come from digital services like call of duty, candy crush, Minecraft etc. Sucks but that’s how it is with big businesses.

From 2001 to 2013 Microsoft built the Xbox and it's brand to be one of the top in gaming, head to head with the Sony Playstation. They were renowed for their innovation in their consoles by doing things like being the first to have a built in hard drive along with Ethernet support for Lan & Online play, and the amazing multi-player service of Xbox Live. They continued this throughout the 360 Era with things like "Xbox Live Arcade" which showcased some of the best Indie games and developers we have seen to this day. People forget that even on the original Xbox, they had great Exclusives like Chronicles of Riddick, Ninja Gaiden was initially exclusive, and the Original Splinter Cell was initially exclusive. People forget that Mass Effect was initially exclusive to the Xbox 360. Then, post Xbox One, the number of innovative titles, features, and just plain good games have freaking plummeted despite buying up massive numbers of developers. People in the industry always make excuses for Phil Spencer, but Xbox as a brand has literally tanked since he was put in charge. It has been completely run into the ground under his leadership 🤷🏾‍♂️.
The entire idea of Gamepass still is predicated on you making GOOD GAMES for it to be of value. $20 a Month may not seem like a lot but that is $240 a year. And at about $60 per game, that means that for gamepass to be of value, you need to have at least 4 great games per year on it, minimum. Technically it needs to be more than that cause at least if I buy it outright, I own it, whereas titles come and go off Gamepass monthly. So IMO it needs to have at least 6 great games a year I would have purchased for it to be remotely worth the financial cost, and Xbox over the last decade has STRUGGLED to get out at least ONE great game a year for the last DECADE. Meahwhile Sony last Gen dropped Last of Us Remastered, Last of Us Part 2, BloodBorne, Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted 4, Uncharted Lost Legacy, God of War, Death Stranding, Final Fantasy Remake, Ghost of Tsushima, Ratchet & Clank, Spider-Man, etc. And This generation they have released Spider-Man Miles Morales, Spider-Man 2, God of War Ragnorock, Horizon Forbidden West, Final Fantasy XVI, Final Fantasy Rebirth, Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart, Returnal, Demon Souls Remake, and this year already have two hits in HellDivers 2 and Stellar Blade.
Meanwhile Microsoft even killed the hype for their greatesr series in Halo with that absolute DUMPSTER FIRE of an initial showing that had Xbox360 graphics so bad they had to delay the game for over a year, on what you were advertising as, "The most powerful gaming system EVER", and it didn’t even look as good as the titles Sony had on their Previous Gen PS4 at the time. Yeah, if they are changing things to "Microsoft Gaming", put a nail in the coffin of Xbox, it is DONE.

Unfortunately companies, like Ubisoft and Sony, use the fact that gamers do not see anything that doesn't directly hurt their particular region of the gaming space as a problem. Which leads to further erosion of the perceived limits of what companies can get away with while still taking our hard earned money. Helldivers 2 is a perfect example of how the total apathy of gamers to issues affecting other aspects of gaming, like console and pc not seeing how issues hurting one, apathy which is only emboldening further abuse, hurts the other as well...
This apparent total lack of awareness is being used by companies to get away with immoral business practices and outright gamer abuse. Looking objectively and honestly, if we're not able to open our collective eyes and notice we're being taken advantage of, we kind of deserve it and further more have no right to complain about things we allow to occur...

I think the problem is you all keep expecting games on GP day one. Call of Duty development cost is around 300Million that means you need to sell 4.4 million copies at $70 to break-even. Daily active users on Xbox rounded 5 million. They are needed at the 70 dollar price point so PC and PS make profit. Because if we say those 5 million users will pay GP, unless they stay 5 months and don't download another game during that period it is unsustainable.
The issue with the "best value on gaming" is that it has proven a huge burden to Xbox and the industry.

The Dead Space remake was well received but wasn't big enough, Alan Wake 2 was great and hasn't made it's money back yet, even the mighty Final Fantasy isn't able to being to make it's money back. Ultimate fact is, games are too expensive to make now and the publishers/owners will want to keep their shareholders happy, which means culling staff and reducing the amount of large AAA (or even AAAA games ;) ) game development.

I'm not just here to stick up for Xbox, but I do want to say, there are other reasons to close studios other than money and output. There could is most likely something behind the scenes that gave Microsoft reason to close Arkane Austin, Tango Gameworks, Alpha Dog Games, and Roundhouse Games. On the surface, a company releasing and bad game or a good game could make a difference whether to keep or close, but it is far from the only factor. Without knowing the all the details of how those developers operated and how that fit with the company's vision or direction, all that can be done is speculate. Which is all any of this is. There is a really good chance that Microsoft didn't want to close a studio who gave them a sleeper hit that won accolades, but some other factor led to the closure of the studio. These decisions, contrary to popular belief, aren't generally made on a whim. I do see the appeal of looking at the big bad corporation and wanting to defend the little guy though.

The whole Tango situation gets really weird especially when, if you exclude everything with the super success of Hi Fi Rush and them saying they should get more games like that after the fact...if you ignore all that, one thing thats really weird about them axing that studio is how Xbox has been trying to break into the Japanese market for a long time with very little success, and here you have a very successful Japanese studio and you let them go...
And then Xbox/Microsoft Gaming is making all these moves and trying to justify their own actions, but at the same time, its hard to believe anything when you cut a bunch of jobs from people who make said games for you, but at the same time are using said money to buy up companies, studios, IPs, and hiring new execs and paying them a single base salary that equals an entire studios annual salary. But yeah, at the same time you have to make "cuts" and reshuffle things around. Right.
Microsofts biggest issue right now, is that they have so many studios and only a handful are known to be actually working on stuff, and some of the known stuff thats being worked on is in a messy state or in limbo. Other than they, a bulk of their own studios arent really known to be working on anything and they are mostly just buying up studios that are already working on stuff rather than working on stuff themselves.
