  • Is there a difference between lipedema fat and normal fat? Can a surgeon removed only lipedema fat?
    ____________________________
Every day more and more women are discovering they have Lipedema and will go on a search on how to understand this disease that they've been suffering with their entire lives. Moment to moment, they will go "Ah! Ha!" It’s so important for medical providers to share accurate information about this lipedema. Lipedema is a treatable disease and can be easily diagnosed. Dr. David Amron, lipedema surgeon and pioneer, talks about everything from treatments, stages, diagnosis, diet, and the truths behind how many liters of fat should be removed.
Lipedema is a complicated disorder that many doctors are unaware of. Until recently, Lipedema has been a troubling medical mystery, so most women have had to live with it. Many of the patients Dr. Amron sees have been to numerous physicians, but never received a proper evaluation or diagnosis. However, there are answers and an effective treatment.
Lipedema is a progressive disease. The sooner it is treated the better for your quality of life.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lipedema occurs almost exclusively in women and usually appears after puberty, progressively getting worse. It affects approximately 11 percent of the female population - 17 million in the U.S. and 370 million women worldwide. Commonly, there's a genetic inheritance component to Lipedema.
As Lipedema progresses, patients experience a series of symptoms including, discomfort, pain, heaviness and numbness. These symptoms get increasingly worse and begin to affect a person's mobility and quality of life, causing decreased ability to move as easily, usually affecting the ability to exercise, too. At later stages, it can even put patients in a wheelchair, or possibly make them bedridden.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dr. David Amron is a board-certified dermatologic surgeon specializing in #liposuction and body contouring. He has pioneered treatment for lipedema globally and was the first surgeon to publicly recognize Lipedema within the United States. For the past 20 years Dr. Amron has focused his research and practice on surgical and non-surgical liposuction and body proportioning as well as other integrative therapies relating to weight loss. Over this period of time he has gained invaluable insight into the genetic function and structural proportions of the human form and developed a refined and comprehensive approach to the art of liposculpture. In our current day and age, educated patients recognize the need for a highly tailored and scientific approach to liposuction. That’s why patients come from all over the world to see arguably the best liposuction surgeon Los Angeles has to offer.

how is this diagnosed and treated? I’ve been to so many doctors for leg pain and bruising and I think this is what I have. I barely eat and have had multiple eating disorders because of this. I have a 23in waist and 23in thighs around and the cellulite and cankles I have is ridiculous. I’m tired of it :(

I don't know if you will see this or not, but lipedema runs in my family. I watched my mom diet and exercise my entire childhood, yet her legs remained large. She would get almost skeletal on top, but her legs were fat columns.
I thought I had dodged the bullet, but at 44 and hitting menopause , my thighs suddenly felt like they were made of jello. I dieter and fasted and hired a personal trainer. I was starting myself most days, but my once shapely legs were now beginning to look like my mother's. It was distressing, to say the least.
I got on HRT and started a very strict keto diet. I also fast and mainly practice alternate day fasting. My legs are less swollen. The fat is still there, and I know that there is no way to lose it without surgery, but I finally feel that at least it is no longer progressing. My legs feel less heavy.
Since this disease seems to be associated with hormonal changes (women frequently first notice symptoms during puberty, after child birth or during perimenopause or menopause - all times when hormones are on a roller coaster) , I suspect peri menopausal and menopausal women could be helped if more doctors recognizied this and immediately put them on HRT. Early intervention is key as there is no way to rid the body of this fat without surgery, which is expensive and not something most people can do. There are reports that the tumescent lipo that removes the diseased fat is starting to be covered by insurance, but so far, it is very rare. This is extremely unfortunate as this disease is painful, can lead to disability and mental health issues. This disease effects at least 11% of all women world wide and some researchers think that number is low.
There is good information about how to get an insurance company to cover tumescent lipo. This is not a cosmetic surgery. It is to remove diseased fat and reduce pain. The aesthetic results are not always a smooth, contoured leg, but there is most certainly a reduction in all symptoms. This surgery can give women back their lives and hopefully insurance companies will decide women are worthy enough for that.

@@drdavidamron Hi Dr. I read this can sometimes be caused by a sudden weight gain. Are there studies of the causes?

Same multiple eating disorders. Where I've eaten 800 calories a day for a long time but thighs don't get any thinner. I am assuming most insurances will not cover the surgery. I am 5'3 inches and my thighs look the same at 135 pounds and 110 pounds.

Thank you so much. The only explanation of lipedema that I found online! Can you get rid of the lipodema fat cells in other ways then liposuction? And is lymfedema a risk factor for lipedema?

Do you expect this procedure to eventually be covered by insurance in the U.S.?

Insurance companies are slowly starting to recognize lipedema for disease it is however they have a long way to go. I have a dedicated insurance team that works with my patients and their insurance plans to get reimbursement and pre-auths. I hope insurance coverage continues to grow and awareness continues to spread.

Will you continue to grow lipedema fat if you get liposuction?

If performed by a surgeon who has a lot of experience (important to avoid random estetic surgeons who will agree to operate anyone anyway...), if performed by a surgeon who knows lipedema in depth and the lymphatic system, lipedema should not come back after. In case a few pathologic fatcells have not been removed, they can grow a bit to a certain extend but will not multiply. Then in case of a weight increase, you should be fine concerning lipedema. But of course, a lot of women with lipedema have a bad relationship with food and my be in need of a psychological help on top of a help of a dietetician.

Hello Dr. Amron, Not sure if I have lipedema or lymphedema. I am obese, but what I have is a huge mass in the pelvic area that almost reaches my knees. Legs, thighs, & stomach area are not like it at all. Bariatric Dr said to have bariatric surgery & after losing enough weight, have it surgically removed. I am 49 yrs old & I try to be as active as possible. But due to it, I have a hard time bathing, sleeping, bending, & walking. The weight of the mass pulls down & is very painful. What & where could I get proper help for this. Is bariatric surgery 1st & waiting to lose weight my only solution? Please help. Thank you

Great question. I recommend treating the lipedema first as many of my patients have had bariatric surgery only to find that is does not have an impact on them due to the diseased lipedema tissue. If you'd like to discuss this further please contact my patient coordinator, Neisha, by emailing neisha@theroxburyinstitute.com or calling/texting 424-333-9944.
