Brahms was very much interested in Harpsichord music, the Brahms Chrysander edition, and others. Brahms owned one of two clavichords previously owned by W A Mozart. The piece by Brahms sounds beautiful, I prefer the harpsichords clarity and timbres to a modern Steinway’s muddiness.
Thank you for your valuable comments. I also own the Chrisander version of Couperin's collection, and I know that Brahms respected Baroque music. However, I did not know that he owned Mozart's clavichord. The clavichord is the origin of keyboard instruments, and I believe it is important to make use of its playing style when thinking about 19th century music.
