Jeremy, Thank you for keeping the history of the 11th Airborne division alive. Thanks for the mention of my Dad's name when telling about the morning runs up Currahee Mountain at Camp Taccoa, Ga. He would tell that story and laugh about the 'old man' showing the young tough troops what 'tough' really meant. Dad said he would be yelling encouragement to them as he was heading back down the mountain. Telling them "you can do it, don't you dare give up, dig down deep, keep going!" When he was out of hearing range the cursing would start start, but every man in the 511th would have charged the gates of hell for Col Haugen! (My Dad's words) Thank you, again! P.S. My Dad was also a witness to Perez's exploits that day as well.
Thank you for your kind words and encouragement, I truly appreciate them. And you're right, COL Haugen was a legend, it will be great to tell his story in a future video. I bet your dad had some incredible stories!!!
I missed quite a few chances to ask my family about things... But I am always learning. We've lost a lot of history. I am very happy that your father made it and was there to share those things with you. My pops was a Vietnam Vet. He taught me to shoot and fix things. He taught me that no matter how I feel for someone, I should never treat them as less than I (a neat feat for a old redneck biker)... But he had very few stories about the war. He wouldn't stand when the veterans were called. Nor wear a hat. Not until 2000 and something... I made a man cry once... We were on a bus... Early 2000. He was getting of and I noticed a unit hat and the Vietnam campaign ribbon. I stood up, ask if he needed help and promptly thanked him for his service. He was ruff. Carrying most of what he owned ... He told me that I was the first person to thank him. Thank God for the service. And those who 'just did their job'.... For they are the best of us.
Craig, we are working on some videos for both the 187th and the 188th, but felt that two Medal of Honor recipients deserved to have their stories told first.
What an amazing story! Thank you for keeping this history alive!

Outstanding presentation, thank you for keeping history alive and bringing attention to this bad dude.
Thanks, Mike!
Thanks so much for the story. When I was a kid I passed the Manuel Perez American legion post almost everyday.
Actually he moved to Chicago, but not Little Village, it was the Pilsen community. My wife went to school at st. Francis of Assisi
What an amazing American hero. It's an honor to never forget these men stories.
@@TheGainfather it's an honor for us to get to share them!
@jeremycholm thank you for sharing and doing the hardwork!
@TheGainfather thank you for your encouragement and support!
Thanks for sharing but can you give some history of the 187 GIR and 188 GIR. 511 PIR was only a third of the 11th Airborne Division.

Relatively speaking there is not a whole lot of info available regarding 11th AB units in WWII other than the 511th PIR from my limited study.
I am a proud member of Manuel Perez Jr. Post 1017 . Little Village Chicago Illinois
Greetings from the 405
