In 1964, Walter Joseph Marm Jr. assessed the situation in Vietnam and decided to enlist rather than waiting around to be drafted. Shortly after enlisting he attended Officers Candidate School and Ranger School and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Army's newly formed 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile).
The division’s mission, among other things, was to deploy the Army’s first airmobile troops, and to test the new tactic of using helicopters to insert troops into combat. Within two months, Marm’s unit would be put to the test in the Ia Drang Valley.
November 14, 1965. As the battle raged all around him Marm led his platoon through withering fire until they were finally forced to take cover. He then single-handedly destroyed an enemy machine-gun position and several of its defenders, suffering severe wounds in the process.
Marm survived his wounds and was subsequently promoted to first lieutenant; on December 19, 1966, he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions that day.
Walter Joseph Marm Jr. attained the rank of Colonel and retired from active duty in 1995.

I served under Walter J. Marm in the 157th separate infantry brigade, Willow Grove, PA from 1987 to 1995. He was my Deputy Brigade Commander. Even when I was an E3 or E4 he always treated me like an equal, NEVER talked down to me and would ask for my suggestions and ideas. Best leader I ever served under. When you met him, you understood the difference between a commander and a LEADER. Thank you for everything, Sir. I was in HHC, S3 with Sgt. Major Golembeski.

I served with Colonel Marm in the 157th Separate Infantry Brigade when I was a young Lieutenant. He set a good example of calm and thoughtful leadership. He helped to shape my perspective on selfless service and leadership of character. I'm honored and was extremely fortunate to have been afforded the opportunity to learn from him early in my Army career.

Colonel Marm was a Captain when I went through Ranger in the summer if 1967. He was our Ranger class’s Tactical Officer - assigned to overwatch all the phases of our nine-week course. He was only a year or so from having been wounded in the major fight at the Ia Drang In 1965 in Vietnam. A terrific soldier. I wrote about my first encounter with him in “Danger Close!” Published last year (2022) by Stackpole Books.

My ex girlfriend's son was a classic case. injured neck in a car accident. prescribed pain pills, prescription ended, began heroin and became hopelessly hooked. stealing from family, lying about needing money for "car insurance", arrest after arrest and ultimately overdosed and died. As soon as he was talking about the “Lost Patrol” I immediately thought back to what I watched in We Were Soldiers movie when the guy started chasing after that NVA scout before the ambush happened. Howe Moore obviously knew how to pick some TRUE Leaders to help lead his men into battle. They all deserve so much more recognition for what they accomplished during that hellish battle. Watching this makes me feel even more proud to be an American. And having a family member who was a MOH Recipient and had a building named after him on Fort Bennining makes me even more proud to be an American. Had a family member who made the ultimate sacrifice while on a deployment to Afghanistan as a Ranger and was the epitome of a Army Ranger and dreamed of getting that Ranger Tab since he was a kid. He died doing what he was meant to do and what he loved to do on this earth.

You're not the only Constitutional patriot here. Some of us recognize The U.S. Constitution as the greatest political document ever written. It guarantees equality for ALL Americans and defines us as a nation. The Constitution is why 75% of all immigrants on Earth choose to come to the U.S. It's worth defending, and I always will.

Thanks to all the Vets who served and still serve and my father U.S. Marine was in Vietnam and it was when Kennedy was still alive and saw action as an advisor.... 98% k.i.a. he is like 1 of 7 or 5 to survive, and was wounded, and his actions calling in artillery to extract back to shore ...yeah all kept quiet recommended for a Navy Cross not ever to get it and not ever any Purple Hearts...3tours &five times wounded so God Bless the ones who were doing there job and doing it because they were good soldiers
