    One of the most beautiful songs of all time...the coda is so incredible there are no words to describe it---if there's such a thing as a God or Higher Power then that Presence is a part of the coda!! I've loved this song for 45 years and it'll be a part of me until the day I leave this Earth!!

      @@nyterpfan Albert Einstein's first wife was actually the one who figured out all that mathematical and physics stuff. After he left her and married his cousin he never published another thing. But that woman was totally kept in silence. Even though she was brilliant and went to college she had a lot of forces against her and it cost her her health in fact she was the one who was given the Nobel Prize Money when he "won" it she was a straight-A student in college and one of only a couple of females allowed to get in but that's the way that was you think you know history huh none of us do.

    A great memory goes along with this song. I was in third grade when this song came out. I remembered my teacher handing me a sealed envelope to take to the office. Ah, a moment out of the classroom; Freedom! -for the moment anyway. When I went through the heavy glass-metal doors of the office, I walked up to the front desk to hand the note to one of the secretaries. While she walked into one of the offices in the back to get a paper form to take back to my teacher, I heard this incredible song from a radio that was sitting in the back of the reception desk. When the secretary handed me the form, I went out those double doors, and crossed the very large and spacious playground to get back to my classroom. As I walked, this song was floating around in my head and I couldn't wait to get home to find out if my older brother and sister had this beautiful song in their growing record collection. I clearly remember it was October because Halloween was a couple of weeks away and the morning air was a bit chilly, the sky a cloudless, deep golden blue; I could feel the warm sun on my face as it's rays blasted into my eyes! As I walked passed the cafeteria, I could already smell the fish sticks and macaroni being prepared. "Oh, yeah," I remembered, "It's Friday!" Life is so good.Lo!

    "Arranged by Stu Scharf and Bob Dorough" --
    Stu (RIP 2007) was a studio session guitarist in New York, who had a long career working with jazz and folk artists. Bob Dorough was his producing partner for this and many other Spanky & Our Gang songs, and later became famous for his work in the "Schoolhouse Rock" cartoon series for the ABC (US) network. He performed the lead vocal in the song "Three Is a Magic Number".

    • @chipco5150
      @chipco5150 2 роки тому +1

      Scharf was a house producer at Mercury. Given that no other recording of his songs --you can find them on youtuve--has anywhere near the production values of this song, its fair to assume that he had little to do with the arrangement and the echo-blended 'sounds' here.

    8th grade ... braces ... short hair (didn't like how it looked on me) ....a little bit on the fat side....and wishin' I looked cute/pretty.... and had a big crush on this one guy. The music .. like this song... kept me going. Had my little portable record player ... speakers popped off and extended out. The 60s ... rolling over into the 70s .... a crazy time ... great music. Good memories. Some not so good but ... they were minor.

    This record brings back sooo many memories. It was the night of June 13, 1968 and I was graduating from high school. There were so many things going thru my mind both good and things that I felt I didn't accomplish as I had hope to. mixed emotions, I suppose. However, for the past 4 years I had always had 77WABC by my side. And I lived to listen to Dan Ingram. Especially on Tuesday afternoons when BIG DAN would unveil the new weekly survey!

    At age 6 or 7, I stole all my teenage sisters' 45s. I eventually laid claim to their albums too. I don't know why they didn't just beat the crap out of me and take all their stuff back, but I somehow managed to make them trade me all their singles to get their album collection back. Lol, I proceeded to trade singles with the teenage girl across the street. At any rate, this one still remains my favorite single of the whole bunch.

    I am more convinced than ever that this is Oz's voice at the beginning. All he would say when I asked him about it was "I worked on it." Oz left the group after the first album (and first three hits!) and they hired Kenny and Lefty to "replace" him. Both Kenny and Lefty were immensely talented. The style of singing in that era made it possible to get a wonderful blend and in many ways, the "boys" all sound "similar." On closer scrutiny, however, each voice is distinctive.

      Did you know Oz? The bass guitar in this song is fantastic - very creative - I wonder if Oz played the bass on this song. Lastly, do you know why he left the group? This group fascinates me. I appreciate your comment - I've been hoping to find some insider info like this.

    A very good band from Ohio. Groovy stuff from them. Spanky McFarland would later go on to perform with the Mamas and the Papas for their concerts replacing Mama Cass.

    Thanks for presenting this glorious song as I remember hearing it AND as I remember playing it, when I was a radio D.J. at a TOP 40 station many long years ago. All the music was on 45 rpm records, protected in their paper envelopes, filed alphabetically in a wall filled with cubbyholes. Every now and then, when I was feeling low, I'd sneak THIS magical Golden Oldie in. It always lifted my spirits. It did then; it still does today.

    On this day in 1968 {March 24th} Spanky & Our Gang performed "Like To Get To Know You" on the CBS-TV program 'The Ed Sullivan Show'...
    One month later on April 20th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #17 and spent 11 weeks on the Top 100...
    R.I.P. Mr. Sullivan {1901 - 1974} and Spanky, aka Elaine McFarlane, will celebrated her 71st birthday in three months on June 19th...

    very unique song. I always thought it was a big orchestra performing this song. it was to my big surprise that it was a 6 member band with a lovely head singer singing this masterpiece. we have no more of this band groups anymore on this 2017. we got only the memories.

    I got spoiled as a kid, as I just assumed that great and wonderful music would just keep being created indefinitely, having no clue that a brick wall was in fact out there ... and that fake musicians would hook-up with big-mouth promoters and others insisting that the Emporer is wearing clothes when clearly he's buck naked.
