Most supposed 50-inch fish don't actually crack the 50-inch mark. Like your close ones, the vast bulk of those reported fish were somewhere between 47 and 50 inches. When you look at reported data on logs the distribution is all skewed when it should naturally keep decreasing at larger sizes.
