- May 2, 1983. Andy Kaufman and the Colossus of Death (supposedly Duke Myers under a rubber Tor Johnson mask) take on Jerry Lawler in a Handicap Piledriver match. Let's just say it doesn't go well for Andy.
EVERY SINGLE FAN starts running over to try and find Andy to prevent him from leaving so Lawler can get his hands on him. I'm not sure we'll ever see this level of heat again. This is by far about as real as it could probably get although after Kaufman's comments about Memphis and the south, I can't say I blame them.

Lawler was "hulking up" way before Hogan started doing it. So much has been taken from Memphis wrestling. :)

Why did you use the word even? You talk like he was a nobody. He was a big wrestling Fan and a very gifted entertainer and comedian so its no surprise that he sold himself so well.

It's such a shame we lost Andy. If Hollywood never really understood him, Andy would have had been right at home in Pro Wrestling! Kaufman and Vince McMahon? What a wild combo that would have been! Now that I think of it, The Colossus of Death sure reminds me of the early days of The Undertaker!

the funny thing is -- Andy has a pinfall victory over Jerry when Andy teamed with Jimmy Hart and defeated him in a 2 on 1 no DQ match prior to this

Interestingly, Andy's win/loss record against male wrestlers is actually quite good at the end of the day. (All DQ wins but they all look like Flair/Steamboat on the scoresheet.) Can you imagine if he had trained to be a wrestler instead of standup comedy? He'd have been a greater heel manager than Jim Cornette or even Bobby Heenan!

If I recall correctly it was part of the gimmick that Andy Kaufmann was trying to pay another wrestler to piledriver Lawler and put him in hospital for three days so they were having these matches and first to piledriver wins.

this video shows about 8 minutes of the fight and the narrator in the end says lawler was the winning after 20 minutes...so I guess there were 12 more minutes of the collossus chasing the king work

@1newg There are still people that believe this stuff was all true even today. Just about 5 years ago, an E! special on Andy Kaufman had people saying "you can't get dropped on your head like that and not get hurt!" A well crafted wrestling angle will always make people go "hmmm...I wonder."
This was epic.. Lawler. Kaufman.Hart made a great show.. nobody could top their wrestling matches.
I could go either way on *if Andy faked his death.* He did say for years before that he *would do it.* The 2 coffins mystery has no explanation(blue coffin was shown in funeral home but they carried-out a brown one). As far as all his friends & girlfriend... *if he DID fake it, they would ALL KEEP his secret.*

Tales from the territories on vice made me come back and watch all these. If someone sees this and hasn't seen the show it's definitely worth checking out and I wish this promotion aired on tv where I lived as a youngin' because I never would've missed an episode
