Album: Broadway Concert DVD
Year: 2002
From: Evita Broadway Musical
Other Info: Concert was held at The Philippine International Convention Center
what i like about lea salonga is that when she sings the words are very clear. you can actually write the lyrics just by listening to it without confusion. not all singers can sing with this clarity.
Thats just the problem if you notice. Well for a fact that i am also a fan of her but she tends to be overbearing with her accents and/or diction most of the time thus makes you the audience focuses on that rather than her singing. Its like when performing shes more counting on her having that perpect pitch- pronounciation rather than her perfect pitch singing. To visualize it a simpler ways just look at how she does interviews and the like. It doesnt fall far from there - she talks as if the same way singing and you can hardly differentiate. I think lea is better for theatrical than in solo renditions. Anyway thats just my opinion and you cannot shoot me dead for that as you may your own.
Ariana Grande left the conversation :(
エストラダルジー Looool😂😂
Reminds me of an old Filipino girlfriends older sister, she would put so much effort into pronouncement, I always thought that was odd but it’s fun to watch lea’s mouth making the sounds, her smile and lips are perfectly placed for best pronouncing
agree
Be honest! How many of you hit replay at the end or have returned to watch this again. Captivating performance.
🇵🇭👊Not to forget, Ms Lea Salonga is one of the best products of the best First Lady the Philipiinse ever had, Mdme. Imelda Marcos' Cultural and Arts program. So proud of you Ms Salonga! Patuloy akong sumusubaybay at humahanga.

Love listening to Ms. Lea
Copycat. She's boring.

@@mariebueno3950Are you kidding me. Imelda marcos, the abusive, stealing and social climber wife of one of the despotic and corrupt dictators of the world. Product?! Who says so. The money that imelda spent was all from the purse of the Philippines. She is convicted and yet she is free! Or course, her son is the president.
Oops.... I changed my mind, this is the best version on UA-cam!

Karen Carpenter’s recording is one step above this magnificent version.
Having listened to Elaine Paige, Patti Lupone, and watching Madonna in Elvira, among others, sing this beautiful song, this is, by far, the most impressive performance of Don’t Cry for Me Argentina.
Nicole S. performance is the best.
You might want to watch Karen Carpenter's rendition.

What about Julie Covington? To my mind she utterly owns the song. Lea comes a very good second though.

Very nice voice 🌹love u Leah
I mean i haven't seen dancing in DCFMA, but i get you
Exactly so, Sir.... She's amazing. This is one of the very best versions... ever
And let's not forget, it's her brother Gerard conducting the orchestra. Such talented siblings!
Lea you have an Angelique voice. She sings so clearly.
Gerard ruined the music arrangement. Almost no spirit. Thanks to his sister for giving spirit and nailing it.

This is the voice I've been looking for to sing this beautiful classic song. I used to play cello in Broadway shows in Seattle and some of the finest voices in the world came through in the shows. They were voices with high drama, beautiful tone and a wide variety of expression. Lea Salonga has all of that. She is a brilliant musician.
What theaters did you play?😊
@@marymunro1142 5th Avenue Theatre, Paramount Theater and Moore Egyptian Theater in Seattle.
@@cellosong What was your overall impression of Fifth Ave. productions? We had season tickets there for number of years. I found the quality of casts rather sporadic. Last show I saw there was Man of LaMancha. I had seen the 1960s production with Richard Kiley. It still brings a lump to my throat when I remember it. Just an incredible piece of art. As you can imagine, I was very hyped to see it on stage again. From reviews I could tell it was not to be the classic adaptation of 50 years ago, but had a more modern take. From all said about it, I thought it would be interesting and showcase the actors well. There wasn’t a dependence on scenery in the original. Pretty bare bones. The voices were fantastic, the direction incredible. I invited a friend to go with me and make it a girls’ night out. The leads were awful. Don Quixote couldn’t hit a note if his life depended on it and Dulcinea made fingernails on a blackboard preferable.
This performance summed it up for me. For paying top theater dollar in Seattle because I like good seats and have hit or miss productions made my decision to avoid the Fifth. Locally it always gets good reviews. What was your experience like there? Am I judging it too harshly? I realize they do a lot of “Let’s see how it plays in Seattle” new shows. When I see something that took home Tony after Tony in the past, I do want to be wowed though. Should I give them another go at it? Being a life long Democrat, I am a follower of the idea that if I see a problem, I should throw money at it. The arts need funding. Should I take the bad with the good, pay my money and take my seat, knowin by doing so, I am a matron of the arts? I think I am answering my own question. Give me your thoughts Pamela.
@@marymunro1142 I don't know what to say. It sounds like your assessment is pretty informed. I played shows back in the late 1970s and early 1980s - a different era. We had big name talent in the leads and an intact culture of Broadway show talent (actors, dancers and singers) in all positions. The on-stage talent and pit orchestra talent was consistently exemplary then.
Madonna > lea
When lea sings a song - she inevitably blows any other performance away. She has range, control, and power all at once - and the most clean beautiful delivery
Simply said, a super great singer.
The thing about Lea is that she is a very intelligent musician. She did not learn this craft by copying or mimicking, she learned it by studying it - the HARD way. She has been performing since she was a little kid and she has never stopped learning. That should always be case. Never stop being better than your former self, even if your former self is already very good.

Apples and oranges.
BTW
Musician - a person who plays a musical instrument, especially as a profession, or is musically talented. Also, according to Webster: a person who writes, sings, or plays music.
Where did you find your very restrictive definition of the word "Musician"? Or were you just guessing or basing your entire comment on your prejudices?
+joey anthony your comment made me laughing out loud.. First define " musician" and come back here to retract your ignorant comment.. Let me define it for you to avoid any troubles on your part.. MUSICIAN is a person who makes music as a profession .. It did not say a person who is skilled in any musical instruments .. And I don't need to state the obvious that Lea is an accomplished musician a singer in every sense of the word..
+joey anthony I would so love to slap a dictionary in your head lmao ..
***** I'm dumb when you don't even know the correct definition of the word Musician? Please check the dictionary before your stupidity kills you.
+joey anthony stop embarrassing yourself Lmaoo.. You wouldn't even admit it even if the truth is staring in front of you.. That's how daft you are.. Musician is a person who performs music. And lea's instrument is her vocal.. Why don't you check her Wikipedia .. And furthermore a person who writes music is also a musician go google it you ignorant fool..
Only a good musician can tell who among these performers sang it right, but for me this is the best. Perfect pronunciation, perfect delivery for this kind of song and perfect facial expression. From mexico with love.
it is called diction
+jonas malabrigo nope! Diction is the choice of words. since shes singing its called enunciation.

Rich very nice comment, and a fantastic singer, absolutely terrific, but karen carpenter owens this song, hands down. no other female singer has the voice that karen had. she sang with so much feeling and emotion.not taking aything away from lea, believe me. when you heard karens voice, you knew immediatly who was singing, her voice was hautingly beautiful. all the best, Louie Vaccaro tenor, las vegas.

It's probably why Disney casted her for Jasmine and Mulan. =D
And shes so beautiful too
Best rendition of this song. Kudos for this Broadway singer.
The performance is like Eva Peron giving a heartfelt speech to her
countrymen, but on a musical stage. This is a great version.
Then it's the wrong approach to the song. It's not supposed to be heartfelt. Eva is seducing the masses with this song. She doesn't mean a word of it.
But I agree that Lea's rendition is lovely albeit inappropriate for the role.
+musicaltheatergeek79. I completely disagree as to the genuineness of Eva Perón's speeches. She did so much more than seduce a nation.
I'm not talking about the real woman; I'm referring to the character in the musical, who is supposed to be seducing the masses with this number.

@dznm10 slamming one artist to praise another isn't cool. they're both good in their own right. also, what does someone's sexual activity have to do with their ability to sing?
+dznm10 Dude, that's not cool, calling people sluts.
Your going from the point here all of the three singers are awesome but we all have are preferences gomez isn't worth mentioning in the same breath as those 3 tbh
They are Madonna's fans.
Beautiful! Her emotion is genuine when she sings. Madonna, Olivia Newton John, Karen Carpenter, Nicole Scherzinger, Patty Paige each have their own take on this song and all are beautiful. I think Olivia is the most sympathetic due to her soft and sweet voice. Nichole and Lea have the most drama due to their power. I first heard this with Madonna and was surprised at the quality of her voice. Paige is classic. I don't know which is "better", they are all great in their own special way.
Rex Cluff Lea's version is great but the original version (Patti LuPone) is still the best.
Rex Cluff 9
The Paige you are referring to is Elaine Page, (not Patty, who was born in 1923) who was the first to sing and perform the role onstage (in London). She would have opened it in NY but was denied a work permit. Julie Covington did the original recorded version, which pre-dated the play. She declined the stage role, and thus it was given to Ms. Page, who was brilliant (and still is).
I think you got Patti LuPone mixed up with Elaine Paige.
No, Elaine Page first in London. Later, Patti LuPone in NY. And prior to both, a recorded version by Julie Covington, who turned down the stage version. I'm embarrassed that I know all this, haha.
She just becomes the song, the lyrics, emotion, the message she is amazing, beautiful voice, emational, acting, pretty face
Madonna did a great job with this ... and Lea left her in the dust ...
She is a true talent, no sound checking, no lip syncing, no back up dancers and singers to enhance a performance, just true talent.

Actually, Nicole Sherzinger was born in Hawaii and raised in Kentucky USA as shown in Wikipedia.
Nicole Scherzinger (/niˈkoʊl ˈʃɜːrzɪŋər/; born Nicole Prascovia Elikolani Valiente; June 29, 1978) is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and television personality. Born in Honolulu, Hawaii and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. She is best known for her work with the pop group the Pussycat Dolls and her on off relationship with British F1 driver Lewis Hamilton. She is a popular sex symbol, having appeared in FHM's 100 Sexiest Women in both 2014 and 2015.[1]

Like all the best Evitas, Leah Salonga understands that this is not a love song but a political speech. It's Eva consolidating her hold over her people.
Yes! Is it possible that Salonga had read Evita's real speech? Her performance is not of the show but of the speech.
@@nstix2009xitsn As far as I know there's no direct link between the song and any of Evita's actual speeches. They tended to be far more assertive in tone. Fiery condemnations of the oligarchy and impassioned expressions of support for the workers and their families.
I think Salonga is aware of how the scene is supposed to be played on stage. More recent stagings have lessened it's grandeur. In the original staging the direction given to Elaine Paige by Hal Prince was to sing it as a political manifesto. That staging had a more aggressive, brutal feel than newer versions I've seen.
@@zacmumblethunder7466 Thanks for the back story.
Classy and beautiful. World class. Filipinos must be so gifted and proud of her.
She does this song with such passion...no one, to me, does it badly but I believe she does it best. A song that has such meaning to me. If you know the story of Evita Peron it helps.
Perhaps she was channeling Filipino first lady Imelda Marcos, whose story is very similar to Evita's, e.g. former beauty pageant contestant meets an up and coming politician and helps him become president and is his greatest asset, then looted the country's treasury for her many shoes and other luxuries. In fact, when the 1980s TV movie EVITA PERON (starring Faye Dunaway) was screened in Manila (it was released in theaters there), they cut out the scene where Eva showed an American photographer her vast shoe collection.
