This is a great tip and how I run most of my blade baits. PRO TIP: Make sure you tie a SQUARE KNOT when you do your overhands instead of a “GRANNY knot”. It’s just a matter of which string goes over and under. A “granny knot” will come untied much much easier. It’s a very simple thing to avoid, but you are much more likely to lose fish eventually if you tie grannies instead of square knots.
Fantastic tip. I have been using this loop knot since I saw this video four years ago. Improved number of fish landed. Never had a loop untie, the hook always straightens out first. I use 80# braid and make sure to use a square knot to secure the loop.
Thinking outside of the box, introducing new ideas and giving us fishos something new to try and adapt to our fishing situation. Like the screw driver trick, thanks for sharing 😊.
Awesome Tony! I lost some nice Trout due to these garbage split rings getting stuck to the side of my spoon and Rapala. Everytime I jig the lure and when I see it reeling it in...the treble hook always has a tendency to get stuck sideways due to the split ring or get caught to the mainline. I learned this after a couple of tries and came out great. Im shaking the lure like crazy and doesn't get caught. Awesome works 👌
I'm planning to go Tuna fishing here in Brazil next weekend and i want to give it a try. Im using industrial 3 strain nylon wire with a diameter of 1.5mm. After achieving the end result i noticed the knot can come undone! So i did a second attempt and in the very last stage of the knot (when the screwdriver is still in place) I put a few drops of superglue on the knot. I think it will work great now!
Thank you Tony for the good info, I’m going to test two identical lures one with regular split rings and one with braid. I’m curious to see the results.
What a great giveaway. I am a shore fisherman and this would be such a great help to know more about the structure I am fishing and if there are actually fish holding where I am cating. Thanks for all your videos and this give-away.
This really is a great trick for when your lure has fine gage wire for eyelets (where you would attach the split rings). Some lures come with really weak split rings.
Tony Acevedo He means that of using a older lure, the original split rings on the lure could previously have possibly could have burred the hook hangers.
thank you very matchTony.when u fight the fish we know braid has problems rabbing against hard matirials (the ring of the lure) the braid can go off with the hook?
If you want just a touch of insurance on the security of that double overhand knot, two things; 1) pay attention to the direction of the second overhand knot...the lines should cross each other inside the knot (recommend looking that up) 2) a little drop of CA glue will make that a forever knot with no worries at all (even if you cut the tags a little too short).
Wondering if you use this braided "ring" technique, can you then use just a regular J hook instead of the inline hook? Since the hook is free to spin now not confined by the metal split ring....
Yeah you can really use a lot of different hooks, from heavy duty bass flipping hooks with the barb on it to hold a soft plastic bait to add to the action of the lure, or you can use a superline EWG hook with a worm or something as a trailer to make it less prone to snags! Lots of possibilities
Does it have to be braid? I fish pretty much for panfish and trout (northcentral PA). Could 30 pound mono work? Yes, it would give/stretch some, but couldn't it work?
Thicker braid works great for this, I use 80lb braid. I cast jigs for king salmon and these hold up very well and helps prevent to fish “unbuttoning” themselves. The only modification I make is that I use the braided split ring to attach a spro power swivel which I then crimp on a si-wash hook to. Seems like overkill but on testing the braided split ring straight to a si-wash hook I noticed that the braid had a chance to actually slip through the crimped down eye of the open eye si-wash hooks. But with the swivel this eliminates that completely and really secures it all so there’s no chance of anything going wrong. Hope this helps someone out there keep that fish on haha
What about for smaller fish applications? Say I'm wading for 3.5lb smallmouth in a river, would I really need to go buy 60-100lb braid or would 30 suffice?
I needed this to connect my sinker slider to a swivel. I don't like snaps and using a split ring is another component. Tying it is great, but I was never sure how to do it.
Gonna need a better knot. It looks like the loop just further tightens over the stop knot as you pull- but we know thrashing fish don't give one consistent pull. I lost the only fish that would have put me in the derby running to this split ring. Pulled up my jig, no hook. Tied it exactly as shown, on a brand new 4/0 gamakatsu.
robert biermann could work. They also recommend hitting the tag ends with a lighter to keep them from fraying open. Have to be very quick with it though.
Thanks for the question. Please visit the full blog on our website and post your question there. Tony can respond with what baits are shown in the video. You can find it here: www.saltstrong.com/articles/how-to-tie-braided-line-split-rings/
"That takes quite some time" yes, and that's why most People use Splitrings. The "freespinning" comes from your main Line, unless you glue the Lure directly on your Rod.
Bluekingfisher as the fish turns and thrashes it’s not so much of the spinning, but the hooks locking up on the lure. Think of it like the hooks being fixed securely to the lure. Your line is pulling on the lure in one direction and if the fish pulls the opposite way the hooks can easily pop off.
@@tonyacevedo3149 ok, please make a little test: hold just your main Line/leader in one Hand and the hook on the Lure in your other Hand, and now try to reproduce that Scenario while pull on both ends. That will just become a Problem when the Lure is fixed (in your Hand while landing) Otherwise the hook up was not perfect and you will loose the fish anyway
this is just straight up false. This isn’t something you should bother with on standard cranks, etc. But bigger hard baits, this is 100% a thing. A big largemouth on a heavy spoon, 1oz+ cranks, and especially glide baits, when they jump and head shake, the weight of the lure itself spinning around can easily pop a treble hook out. This is common knowledge and there are a number of slow-motion videos demonstrating it. That’s why so many hard swimbaits/glides have swivels on their hook hangers. Triple trout, Jackall gantarell, g-ratt Pete series, etc. There are both objective demonstrations and loads of anecdotes backing this up. And in fact it’s very easy to test yourself as you suggested
So all of the pro-tided swivel hook proponents are telling me that I need to remove the split rings on my Nomad saltwater jigs that I catch 40lb Bluefin tuna or 25lb Yellowtail with and tie on the hooks? A Pro Bass Tournament fisherman suggested to me at least 10 years ago that if you add 1 or 2 swivels to the back hook, the chance of a fish twisting off is eliminated. Just saying.
Faulty reasoning behind this useless mod. Nothing has a solid grip on the front of your bait when there's a fish attached to it, so there's no restrictions on hooks' ability to twist. A single fish fight could never abrade thru a split ring but could definitely annihilate a loop of braid if everything isn't dead smooth. Nothing like having to retire the day's hot bait every time you catch a good one because you have to check/retie the soft shackles, or losing an entire hook and fish because there was a chip in the epoxy finish by the eye.
This is a great tip and how I run most of my blade baits.

You're welcome!
Nice video! I used 80 lb Spectra and heated the tag ends with a lighter. Looks great. Thank you!

Wow you learn something new every day thanks for the lesson I'm going to try this on my trout and crappie rooster tails
Glad we can help!
That's the same knot I use with lacing cord to tie up electronic wiring on avionics equipment. Great idea! Never thought about using it for fishing.

Robert - Braid I really easy to tie good knots into, wire is not easy to knot well.

Update?
@@MrMinigunman101 Curious if you have any results to give on the difference between soft split ring and standard 4 years later?!
Tried this on 16lb braid. Held on really well until I tested it on a nail on the wall. Will try this with some thicker braid when I find some. 😊
Great video thanks 😊
Nice, very good idea. Thanks for sharing it with us 🔝😃👍💪💪
Mario Scarpuzza no problem!

Great insight - thank you!
Hi Tony , nice video, but is adding a barrel swivel to your split ring a better idea?
Can you describe this suggestion in more detail? TIA
That’s a lot of extra hardware too change the desired lure action and to fail on big fish.
Great video thanks
Yeah! Thank you tony. Can't wait to use it for catching mahseer.
You saved my money and time :) big thanks.
Great video thanks 😅
I would be sure to inspect the eyes on your lure to make sure there are no burrs caused by the split ring if using an older favorite lure.
William Elliott nonsplit rings needed with this. Ties directly to the eyelet
Tony Acevedo He means that of using a older lure, the original split rings on the lure could previously have possibly could have burred the hook hangers.
Bayou Burner ahh gotcha! I thought he was referring to the split rings causing frays in the line.
thank you very matchTony.when u fight the fish we know braid has problems rabbing against hard matirials (the ring of the lure) the braid can go off with the hook?
It's possible and yes the braid will wear over time, but you want to use heavy braid (nothing really less than 60lb and up to 150lb)
Cool idea. I thought of doing this once.

Oh someone already said this, good! This is the difference between a “square knot” and “granny knot”. The first knot you learn in scouts 😂

HOT TIPS" THANKS in IDAHO!
I'd also add a step of burning the tag ends of the line to prevent fraying over time

Thanks for the feedback!
Nice tip- question I saw the previous video with the braid built in - could shrink tubing work on the eye of the hook?
It wouldn't be strong enough to hold the braid. On those hooks the braid is held on with epoxy.
I am using non-slip loop knot for this.
Thank you 💪💪
You're welcome!
Thank you for sharing ❤️🙏👍
No problem!
I'm not sure how you do the 2nd loop and pass tag(s) thru the loop I just end up with a single loop
Do you pass tag ends thru the 1st loop
HELP
Excellent Smithers
...so use a square knot to tie off the tag ends. Got it.👍🤔👍🎣🤙
Can you add a eyeless hook in that??
This would work great on most fish, but would even very heavy braid keep a spanish mackerel from biting through?
Use long shank hook...they'll bite the hook shank which is harder than wire 😊

I follow up my fg knots with a dab of super glue on the cut tag ends, Dunno, maybe that would add some extra security as well.

Here in the northeast for striper on most lures we remove the rear hook!
Good stuff!
2:13 "small round piece" = cylindrical rod :) really think this is a great video and i cant wait to use this on some homemade lures
Funcionaron los amarres?
Brilliant!
David Yarber pretty handy!
Does anyone know of animations or pictures for this knot? It's much easier for me to reference a simple form of instructions rather than a video
Check this out: www.saltstrong.com/articles/fishing-knots/
Dude you need to use 3X treble hooks, I can't believe how easy they bent!!!
I would just use a stiff split ring instead and use a pliers to maneuver them. I think I have never experienced to loose any hook my entire life.
Thanks for the tip!
I cant see this holding up to a few 20lb fish
in my village we call these assist hooks XD
What is that bait?

The knot doesn't hold though. If it binds and you turn it another half turn it pulls out

Try doing that in a force 6 with rain in your face...
those are tough conditions to say the least. 😆
Thats like putting a screen door on a submarine

If your hook bends that easy your slit ring is the least of your problem ! What a joke
Why not just tie a Palomar knot? Much sturdier and cleaner??????
That would secure the hook snug to the eye. You want a loop for more freedom of movement of the hook.
This seems wrong.
