Can you run a Chinese Diesel heater for Free ? 8 Kw Vevor Diesel Heater vs Xbox 360 power supply

- Vevor sent me this 8Kw diesel heater to review and it really does what it says on the tin. It holds 5 litres / 1 gal of Diesel or Kerosene and can run for hours on this. Flat out it makes 8kw / 27Kbtu and burns about 0.6 litres per hour.
I think this little heater is great value and very easy to maintain given how few parts there are in it. A great test for someone reviewing a product is would they spend their own money on it. i have already bpught one as well for another project.
Cheers Gerry

Nice work with the power brick Gerry. Never would have thought of that.
I received mine last week and am eager to try it out. Thanks for the tips.
Brilliant video, well done 😁 What a great little heater! Looking forward to seeing what fuel you use next 👍
I really enjoy my diesel heater! I am so impressed with these that I just purchased my second one. In a pinch you can heat your home with one.
Very nice to see this, just got mine today!
Nice practical review. Thanks for posting it.❤
When my workshop gets chilly, I think of you
Good review. I would point out that the 12V consumption you mention was the average over time (40 watts), when starting and intermittently during use it needs to draw something like 120w which is probably why you used a 200w supply to give a good margin.
Great video, love it, wish you could review more sources of it, that would be great👍
I bought another exhaust and air hose kit to extend the hoses from Amazon. I've been using it in my shop and I'm very pleased with the performance. I direct the heat hose to the area I'm working and it raises the temperature from 30F to 55F which is comfortable enough to work in.
How big is your shop?

Finally!! Mine just showed up yesterday. But I've been waiting for you to try one of these. I want to use mine just t keep my garage above freezing then I'll kick my furnace on when I'm in it. I'm anxious to see your results on oil testing as I'll be doing my own testing as well.
Also, the “intended” routing is the exhaust goes straight down and out, the hole you put your exhaust through is for the intake. The intake filter is to be mounted on the back of the unit above that hole throughs the chassis. (There’s a few holes.)
I thought what Gerry did looked awkward, but I couldn't figure it out from the camera angles. Thanks!!
@@danh0369 My pleasure.
Gerry, another good video, you have inspired me over the years and I have built various oil burners and learnt a lot about the subject watching your builds.
I too have just got into these great little heaters, let me share what I have so far discovered.
The internal diameter of the exhaust port is as small as you should go, any further restrictions and you start to have issues down the line with this being a contributory factor to inevitable sooting and the need to clean.
The plastic squared mesh on the intake restricts the airflow considerably, lose this and just use the outer threaded part of the ring to keep the covers on the burner.
Waste veg oil at approx 25% of the mix seems to be ok without causing too much of a problem.
Waste engine oil is a bit if a disaster even at small quantities, inside the burner there is a wire mesh ring, you need to get the metal cover off the bottom of the burner to access this. It clogs hopelessly with engine oil, once you break into the burner to get it out to clean, you then need to repair the burner. I left one in soak in oven cleaner for a few days, then rinsed it with petrol, and then burnt it off and it was still clogged up to some extent.
So for now I have stopped experimentation with old engine oil. Your burners are best with this.
I have also experienced some start up issues with the glow plug error showing after long hot burn sessions. All that is needed is a bit of disturbance of the wire wrap connections around the glowplug and its good to go again until the next time. I thought initially it was a dodgy plug, however I have now experienced this on 3 different plugs. Was thinking about modifying an old engine glowplug possibly to overcome this small issue. The type of control panels you can tweak the pump and airflow rate are nice in that you can tune things and need only a simple co2 meter to do so. The downside of these is that the user menu isn't as simple i.e. H1,2,3 etc, but you can tweak them to give a really lean clean burn with a pretty big gain in consumption economy.
I am currently playing with heat exchangers on the exhaust side of mine to produce hot water to feed a small radiator. I've made a few exchangers with copper tube but now am using an old egr cooler which is very efficient.
I have a basement and have put insulated ducting up into the rooms, not a full replacement for the CH on a cold sub zero night, but certainly a supplement.
Lastly, I suck the burner intake air across part of the exhaust to pre heat it and see a higher burn temperature.
Sorry for the long comment, hope you or someone getting into these gleams something useful from it. Keep the videos coming Gerry
Thanks for the write-up there. Say - what is an EGR Cooler ?
Also - can you just mix the veggie straight into a tank of diesel ? Any mixing probs ?
How about when the space (garage) gets cold - will the veggie tend to gel ?
Perhaps I’d need to start the heater on straight diesel (Furnace oil), then add in the veggie when it gets warmed ?
@@SquareRootOfMinus1 Exhaust Gas Recirculation cooler. Some bright spark came up with putting exhaust gasses back into the engine many years back and part of the process to make the method more efficient was to cool that gas prior to the enging having to sniff it's own farts. Yes it reduces nasty emissions, but it could be argued that the obsolescence built in, the amount of sick vehicles runming around when they block and the amount of manufacturing resources that go into building and maintaining egr systems possibly outweighs the benefits.
have you ever heard of paragraphs? 🤣 it makes posts so much easier to read.
@@oojimmyflip I didn't think I was doing my English A level again, merely a reply on UA-cam.
great vid look forward to the next
i found if you have to drill through a shelf top, place the heater where you need it use a sthill chain saw spanner and place under exhaust outlet its exactly the right height so you can put the heater on the surface where you need to drill the exhaust draw around it and whack the hole out with a step drill and it lines up perfect also with the inlet side
That's the way to do it - buy something, modify it, and THEN test it :-) - Keep up the good work with your videos
Excellent stuff. Would like to know more about burning other fuels in it.
The Xbox PSU is a great idea. These heaters actually need at least a 140w power supply. That's how much the glow plug draws during start up. Once the heater is running at operating temp, that's when it only draws 40w
Hi Gerry
Great videos really helpful, can you tell me where I'd get a boiler like you used in one of your first uploads 9 years ago. It was the one where you had water in the fuel and you had the flame going from underneath the boiler. Thanks 😊
Nice one Gerry
Great video 👍
*GerrysDiy* New Sub, bravo well done, great content. GOD Bless.
Awesome info
Jerry, don't have the exhaust running to the back. It's going across the fuel line and your fumes are venting near the intake. Have it coming out the side of the machine away from the fuel pipe.
Love the channel by the way.
I like your jacket! I've got a few guiness' you'd love to get your hands on I bet
I found my 8KW diesel heater (re-labled 5KW heater) is just able to heat my 2 stall garage (22' x 24') My garage is three stalls so I have a roll down tarp to block off one stall. It's cheap heat and is not loud or annoying like some heaters.
Good video Jerry, I’ve just bought the 24v version, would you know what power supply I could use if I run it off the mains?
I bought two. One to use and the other for parts. But so far so good, and this is the 2nd winter I'm using it.
Works fantastic in a small enclosed space, like the cargo area of a work van.
I bought one of these a few weeks ago and was wondering if you were gonna have a go at er.
The smoke stops after 3 minutes or so. It seems to occur the first time it's fired up for the season. I run mine without a filter on the air intake. Heats a small cabin in 10 minutes, then you need to turn the temperature down.
Great video. I am a bit put off from the unit by the noise. Seems very loud in the video.
I'd love to see you build a DIY unit that is bigger and capable of heating your shop. It shouldn't be hard to create a chamber maybe out of a used propane tank. Add some fins and a blower with a drip feed for the fuel. add a glow plug and a fan and viola larger Kerosene heater !
He's been building those for years on this channel already.
*nice job anything which saves me paying these*
*robbing power companies gets my attention*
Well said, money grabbing power companies. They are loving this fuel crisis and stinging our wallets.
Sorry I missed it I suppose could rewind but on the power Brick what were the connection you made?
Good idea with the xbox power supply. I have an old 360 so will likely do the same when i buy one of these heaters. So black to black wire, and the yellow is the power?
Hi, any idea how to get the controls/thermostat inside my camper while the portable heater sits outside 3ft away? It’s a pretty short duct run of 3-4ft at most to a vent hole
This is wild i was planning on using Xbox 360 power Supply
does the xbox 360 power supply need to be 205w? i found a few models on ebay that vary in wattage from 135 to 203 depending on what model xbox 360 they're for.
do you suggest any one in particular? i guess it wouldn't matter much if the unit is drawing in less than that on run/startup anyway, right?
I recently played with one of these extensively. I tried start up on diesel then switch to waste motor oil when hot. No mater how I tried it I got the build up like you get in the bottom of your waste oil pot in the burner. Taking the burner out is easy. Cleaning it is nearly impossible. Thankfully new ones are $20 but after 6 hours the burner is plugged. Trying a different approach.
Waste veggie oil may not build up.
I brought one for my garage and it works fine
Crocodile clips are good for running these heaters, especially if they are a temporary setup.
Dear Garry i always wanted to build / convert a wood stove waste oil burner but now my housing association says we can't have chimneys. So this seems like a great way to get around that any change you explore the possibilities of making a more quit exhaust for it
You might want to deep dive… a chimney and a flue are decidedly different. They (theoretically) can’t keep you from having a flue because furnaces, water heaters, etc have flues. Crap like this is why I’ll NEVER live under an HOA.
Can't have chimneys ? How will Santa deliver the presents to your children ?!?! Oh my oh my 😂
I built a waste oil burner similar to yours but can you tell me why I have white smoke coming out of the t where the oil goes through
I have one Im putting in a box for out winter. It will heat my house. I see the paramotor, they are a lot of fun. Not for the faint hearted
Hi gerry I have a couple questions for you on waste oil burners wondering if you can help?
Hello could you help me would a xbox 360 slim cord work as well or just an xbox 360 cord? the ends are different but im just curious what your end looked like before you cut it. please.
Is there a thermostat control on those? Where I could set a temp and I could go on and off ?
Shucks! knew I shouldn't have thrown that away when the XB1 came out... $16 amazon power supply it is...
Just a thought what if a person ran the exhaust through a water tank capturing that heat before sending it outside .or a coil in a air box with a fan capturing the heat before wasting it outside. wonder if it can operate with a small amount of back pressure or make exhaust coil larger diameter. i like to tinker and i think a ton of energy is being wasted .good video .
I wonder how hardy the unit is if it was placed outside my van and the heqt outlet piped in... to leave rhe noise outside.
I think the 8 kw output is measured in Chinee kilowatts, the maximum output is actually 5kw with these units.
Had one in my workshop for 3 years now, running on red, feels a lot safer than the free standing "workman's" propane burner connected to a trip hazard hose and big cylinder I had been using ?
Yes i very much doubt its a 8kw.
Agreed 👍 they are just copys of the 2 or 5 KW eber from the 80s, 8KW is just marketing wank 😏
Gerry, there's actually a forum for Chinese diesel heaters because of the chinglish, to help people better understand how to properly install and use them.
I would love to see you try gearbox oil in your heater. It supposedly burns as clean as propane or natural gas.
Say - would you have a link to that Forum ? Is it good info - legit ? Wondering about alternative fuels : veggie, biodiesel, etc. Thnx
I would be grateful for the link if you have it? Just getting in to diesel heaters!
They are mot 8Kw Jerry. Look at the energy density of 1ltr of diesel as opposed to consumption. Then factor in exhaust losses. That's a defo heat recovery point btw.
Jubilee clips where do yall get that I mean we call them hose clamps or I think I have heard worm gear clamps
Vevor sent me an invitation. I think I'll accept! Say, this would be a good opportunity for you Gerry! Now you can start trying different fuel blends in it. More videos!!!
How in the heck did you strip that Xbox cord? I'm having a hard time and about to throw mine away and just go the regular power supply route.
Hi how did you get the remote working mine keeps saying scanning doesn't connect to anything.
Exhaust fumes are meant to go outside otherwise it's dangerous. You probably know that already but others may not
Great video, I've just ordered one and was going to use the xbox360 power supply. I realise the heater is 12v so how come the power supply works is it like an inverter? And does it make a difference if its a 5kw or 8kw model.
The heater will only draw the amount of power that it needs. That's why it works. An inline 10 amp automobile fuse should be used on the positive lead to protect the heater in case of a power surge. Your question wasn't to me but I figured I'd answer it since it's been a few days. I need to get a 12 volt power supply myself and will probably use an Xbox power supply too. Take care!
Just buy a 5KW it's cheaper and 8 KW ones don't actually exist 😏👍
I am using my old Xbox PSU now. Another reason I can give to my wife for not throwing old things out!
Super pour les campig car
I think you will be surprised at just how much it will heat up. Leave it on for an hour or so and do a comparison of the temperature difference.
Hi ive stripped my old xbox power brick down it has about 12 wires 5 black 3 yellow ect how do i know which one has the more amps please
Would an 8kw heat an 8mt x 7mt garage? How far could you duct the warm air, would there be a limit?
Can these units run on vegetable oil or used engine oil?
Can these be set for thermostat control?!?! Turn on automatically, until it gets to a set temperature, then turns off??
Seen the heat output measured and it was about 3,62 KW. And there are only 2 models, not 4, just different pump speeds.
Nice Video…are you a northsider or Southsider…
I can't believe I just found this life hack using waste oil stove burner
DIY Fabrication
I'm surprised it worked. Everything I order from Vevor is broken right out of the box. I suppose if they send one to use on a channel they're going to make sure it works before they send it
there are screw holes to elevate the heater, they didn't make the exaust pipe ending this long by mistake,,
How many hours does it run on a full tank. And as always great video.
a test I saw was 2.5 hours on high non stop = gal.
Edit = 1 L
On low they use around 250 ml per hour 👍
@@TheCritterWindow If it runs for 2 1/2 hours on one litre, it ain’t producing much heat!
I litre of diesel contains about 10.5kWh of energy. 10.5kWh/2.5h= 4.2kW. And that is before any efficiency reduction (the heat carried out through the exhaust).
If only 80% efficient, the real output would be 4.2 * 0.8 = 3.4kW. That makes the 8kW claim pure fantasy - or a downright lie!
Can you do a video on this particular model that you have I’ve been looking at them on Amazon same company. I would like to see a video where someone can show us conclusively that the heat chamber is completely sealed and safe to blow into a house or other living area I want to set one outside of my house and run the heat duct through the basement window and into an existing furnace vent. I don’t want to try to use this for the entire house venting system only one vent for the living room and then we would only use it while we were in the room primarily on weekends and never unattended. I believe I’ll try and run the air intake in the basement also and leave the exhaust outside with the heater. Does anyone think that this is a safe idea??? I thought about screwing the heater into flat concrete blocks to make it more stable and safe???
Thank you, kind sir. Kindly, what is the price of this heater, what type of fuel does it work, and how much fuel does it consume per hour? Thank you
All the info you asked for is in the video and video info text.
They are brilliant heaters 5 or 8 k 😁. 🇬🇧
Oh maybe a new flight test in the near future.
The unit will draw a nominal 15A on start-up & shut-down - at 12V, that's 180W. However - there's a chance of a peak of 20A draw - FYI - in case it blows an older 240W power supply.
Can you really use the Xbox power supply instead of a trickle charger and 12v battery?
@@michaelsfoster8442 No, not really. What happens if the heater is at full temperature and the mains goes off? The motherboard, screwed to the burner/heat exchanger, will likely get fried and cost you £15, or more, to replace it. It may not happen the first time, but those PCBs do not like being overheated (it’s why they are placed in a cold air stream and why the heater normally has a shut-down procedure to cool everything down before the fan shuts off).🙂
Biggest peak draw I've ever seen is 13A when the glow plug is on, so about 145w 🤔
Nice little heater, but I doubt "Flat out it makes 8kw / 27Kbtu and burns about 0.6 litres per hour". Easy Google search will tell you "One litre of diesel fuel has an energy content of approximately 38 MJ - which approximates to 10 kWh" . Therefore at 0.6L usage that equates to 6kWh, some out the exhaust and the rest out the front. Eberspacher on the other hand quote fuel useage of 1.05 l/hr on their 8kw heater which would be more realistic.
5kW and 8kW are identical inside! Probably the 8kw sticker will cost more!
I have been watching videos the last week on these. People say they run well and hotter if mixed 50-50 with filtered used engine oil. I want one for a small greenhouse.
As long as you are prepared to offset your labour to pull it apart and clean it every so often. It will soot up much sooner than with clean diesel. I've heard that one way you can slow that maintenenance down is by running the heater on high for fifteen minutes/half an hour on the highest setting once a month or so. I don't know if that's true or not. Of course if you tell your "Green" friends, relatives or work colleagues you are heating with used engine oil be prepared for someone to dob you in to the Authorities. It's illegal in the UK to burn used motor oil.
@@regwatson2017 it's also illegal what the Energy companies are doing !
@@k1ortia what are they doing?
@@dannywilliams6643 lol. That's a good one..👏🏽
@@k1ortia I was serious, I'm not trying to be a jerk. I can only assume you mean the ridiculous increase in price? I'm not sure if it's illegal, but it's definitely evil/immoral. Take care!
Gerry is everything okay with you and yours?
8kW? Never. Cheap chinese diesel 8kW air heaters simply do not exist. Vevor conned you. Check the instructions - if the maximum fuel consumption is 0.51l/h it won’t even deliver 5kW, let alone 8 - diesel only contains about 10.5kWh /litre and the heater is not 100% efficient (just feel the heat lost by the exhaust)!
Lots think and even insist they have an 8kW heater but they, I’m afraid, are delusional, ‘cos none of them will burn almost a litre of fuel every hour.🙂

Does anyone know what the main difference is between the two 8k heaters?
Thanks
I believe that they are 1 to 5 kW, even the 8 kW are really 5kws. The 8kws heater will not fit the case.
2 kw has 2.75 vs 3 inch out for three 5 and 8 kw if I remember corectly
Just so you know, those are really 5kw heaters labeled as “8KW” for sales….
