    It is also known as the Consort, a reference to its historical status as the co-reigning city of the #Byzantine Empire next to #Constantinople. In fact, Thessaloniki is the second most important metropolis of the ancient #Kingdom of Macedonia, the Eastern #Roman Empire, the Ottoman #Empire and Greece. It is located in the #Thermaic Gulf, in the northwest corner of the Aegean sea. It was founded in 315 BC. by King #Kassander the Macedonian, who named it after his wife Thessaloniki, daughter of #Philip II of Macedonia and sister of #Alexander the Great.
