I wasn't sure what to expect from this, but it turns out Kuri Kinton is pretty awesome. It's very much inspired by Irem's Kung-Fu Master, but what sets this apart is its sense of humour, graphics and animation. It seems the game was released only in Japan, or at least there's no full English translation, so it's difficult to understand the conversations with the bosses, but information available online indicates the player assumes the role of a Chinese police officer, who must venture into the underground base of a criminal gang in order to rescue a senior member of the force and his daughter.
The gameplay is pretty straightforward: follow the direction of the arrow shown in the top-left of the screen and beat up the bad guys who stand in your way. You have a range of punches and kicks at your disposal, plus a fireball attack, which requires time to charge up; releasing the button too soon results in the hadoken fizzling out with a pop, much to the consternation of the hero!
Provided you can stand still long enough, the hero will summon his inner Chi to create an over-shield to protect from enemy attacks. It's possible to summon up to three levels of shield, which you really want to keep up for as long as possible, especially when it comes to fighting the game's many bosses.
Kuri Kinton isn't a title you're likely to return to that often, but if you've never played it before, but it's quirkiness means it's definitely worth taking the time to try it out.

Hokuto No Ken, Dragon Ball, and Kung Fu Master rolled in one.

I was gonna say the same thing almost. Kung Fu gameplay, Dragon Ball main character (along with Red Ribbon Army(?) regular enemies and Tournament Saga minibosses), and Fist of the North Star bosses. The first boss I'd put as Yuda or Shin, second boss as Kaioh, third boss as Hyo or Shuu, fourth boss as Souther or Juuza, and final boss as Raoh.
I can see the influence.
I played this game to death as a teenager, and more when i found it on MAME.
Fun fact: Kuri Kinton is a popular Japanese sweet dish made with chestnuts (Kuri) and sweet potatoes, typically enjoyed during new year's eve.

This game was a coin sucking monster when it was released back in the late 80s. It also could not have picked a better time to be distributed across Japan, at the height of Dragon Ball & Fist of the North Star's popularity while piggybacking on the movies made during Jackie Chan's prime. This is one of those few games that hit all the right notes and then some. I was just surprised it did not see a port to the PC Engine and would only appear as part of a compilation release for the PS2 during the early 2000s.
The combination of Dragon Ball and Hokuto no Ken looks kinda weird but I agree with you, it was the perfect choice for the time.
These bosses have a Hokuto no Ken vibe.
Especially the final boss. He looks like Raoh.

Bosses are all taken by Hokuto No Ken: Yuda, Ryuga, Shu, Souther, Raoh, in this order. And also the girl you find in the end is clearly Lynn. :-D

Is anyone else grateful for simple plots and relatable characters? I miss when it was easy. Bad people tripping and good people kick their behinds.

This must be the only game, where the hero arrives with a moped (Looks like a Suzuki PV50 / Honda Monkey to me).

How nostalgic! I've played it a few times in the 80s.
You could see Hokuto no Ken villains in at least half the main bosses (Shin, Raoh, Kaiou...).
i was wondering if this was inspired or a reskin of a hokuto no ken game
@@captRhay Or a reskin of a Dragon Ball game but it's neither. Taito just decided to make game about "Goku against the Red Ribbon Army if the RRA's generals were all Hokuto no Ken characters".
@@Asterion608 I see much less of Kid Goku than I see of Hokuto no Ken, and not even sure the Red Ribbon army arc was published by the time this was being developed, but I admit one could spot similarities 🤔

@@captRhay When i saw it Hokuto no Ken was popular in Italy (1987) and we did see lot of similarities included a supposed post-nuclear setting, plus they are talking in a similar way no how the Hokuto no Ken villains talk, mentions of Jidai (era) and similar topic, as far as i can read with my basic japanese
Actually, i read in a game magazine that Kuri Kinton is originally in fact a Hokuto no Ken game based on a teenage Kenshiro's exploits against the rival school and criminal organization the Taizanji, set in the late 80s before the nuclear war, but Taito failed to secure the rights to use the Hokuto no Ken names and characters, so they had to change the names.
Same exact thing with Hokuto No Ken for Sega Master System which for international release became BLACK BELT, and HNK 2: Legendary Savior becoming LAST BATTLE for the Mega Drive/Sega Genesis.
Kuri Kinton WAS released in US arcades by World Games, but unfortunately it was a VERY lazy export as it STILL doesn't translate the Japanese dialogue before the boss fights.

something tells me that this was originally a shonen jump license but decided that it was easier to just make their original characters instead.

I can believe that. The main character does remind me very much of teen/adult Goku from the OG _Dragon Ball_ , not to mention the bosses look like they came right out of _Hokuto No Ken_ ( _Fist of the North Star_ ). My speculation is that Taito probably wanted to make an action/adventure/beat-'em-up game using some fight anime/manga license, but decided against it due to international audiences (I.e., Americans) being unfamiliar with such IPs at the time.

The main character looks like Goku without the crazy hair. The bosses look like characters straight out of Fist of the North Star. And the final boss bears a resemblance to Roah.
