    And I'd take this over an absurdly over-priced 4-pot E class or 5-series any day of the week. Resale value is a pointless metric when discussing luxury sedans - they are all bad, and arguing about which is least bad is akin to debating which of the Seven Dwarfs is tallest. This car is, in my view, not so much a better 5 series or E class (though it should prove more reliable than either of those) but a better Lexus GS. It plays a strong hand in value, but is also very much desirable on it's own merits of performance and aesthetics. It won't serve as well, of course, for those who need a boastful badge in order to compensate for other deficiencies. But given the product lineup so far, I expect the Genesis badge will improve in that respect over time.

      eliott970 future Genesis will have heads-up screens. Maybe Hyundai will offer the same, though it’s a very simple media interface. They’re also moving to a dial below/in front of the arm rest to manage the media.

    We know the badgewhores won't buy it. In your example, they'd gladly pay 100k for a similarly equipped car from Mercedes. You can't fix stupid. Then again, people looking at any luxury brand are playing the "keeping up with the Joneses" game to some degree.

      I think they are not just keeping up with Joneses , they are trying to impress themselves as well. As most buyers are - emotional buyers, not automotive engineers who checked the car personally themselves. It is height they need to conquer, ( buying a branded car) when they psych themselves up like that, they get the elation when they achieve that. Wow, I owned a Benz,/Audi/BMW gives them happiness ! (Even thought deep inside they are aware of how economically non-viable decision that is )

    Great review and I could not agree more about your "value proposition" statement and the overall build and design(s) of these vehicles. I "converted" to a Hyundai (aka Genesis) 5.0 Genesis from a 2007 BMW 335i in 2009/10. Since then I have leased 2 more iterations of Genesis 5.0's. I am going to pull through my 2015 5.0 Genesis a bit early to a 2018 AWD 3.3T in the next few weeks. In my opinion, the 3.3T is different than the 5.0 in a grin-on-my-face good way. Response is linear and feels more eager than the 5.0 up and down the rev band. During the months before my past leases have expired, I've searched to find something else, something better, or something "more" with the other brands and test drive after test drive am reminded I can only get to a Genesis level of satisfaction by potentially spending upwards of $20-$30k more. Fortunately I am not a brand snob, except for perhaps now a Genesis snob, as personally I do not care that Genesis is a Korean automaker. I like driving a Genesis because I get asked "what is that?" or "is that the new Genesis?" at least a few times a month. The Hyundai/Genesis models that I have driven in the past were bulletproof, reliable, quiet, refined, fun to drive for long and short distances, and were not washed out in the mixed sea of Mercedes, BMW, Lexus and Audi. I am sure that those brand enthusiasts will disagree with my impressions of Genesis, and like you I encourage anyone who is looking to purchase a BMW, Audi, Mercedes or Lexus to also test drive a Genesis. Those who do, are usually surprised, pleased and "converted".

      Excellent post, Dave...I could have written the same story but I think you did it better anyway. I am going to play out 6 more months on my lease and get the G80 sport. I have looked at all the competition and you are spot on, unless I want to go up 20 or 30 k forget it. I used to be a bit of a brand snob I guess, but Genesis changed that and I still thank a good friend for almost forcing me to check them out.
      @ Konrad, sorry but I have to disagree. I had the BMW 5 series before and would not go back. It is of course a matter of opinion, but funny thing is my buddy who "forced" me into checking out the Genesis also had a .....yup BMW 5 series. Keep the badge and I'll keep the 20k a take a trip to Tahiti. = )

    A lot of hating going on when discussing Hyundai/Genesis. Truth of the matter is, most people buying these G80's and G90's are trading in their BMW's and Mercedes. Not because one is better than the other, but simply because Genesis is a real contender. This brand is turning heads, where as the veteran luxury brands are a dime a dozen, that hardly get a second glance. Often times it's because we want something refreshing, something new. Read all the professional reviews on this car, not too many negative comments out there. Genesis also offers free concierge service, free maintenance for 3 years, 3 years of Blue link telematics. It's the totality of everything that makes it attractive to the consumer. When this car was badged as the Hyundai Genesis (2015, 2016 models), it was very successful, influencing Hyundai to launch the Genesis brand on it's own. The numbers don't lie. This car is that good.

    Unfortunately the question this time doesn't apply to sometime like me as I find most of the German line to be seriously boring exterior wise. There's also so many out there that the exclusivity factor is pretty much in the Toyota zone. I feel like having a Genesis gives the offering of "something special" as most people are blind sided to only one brand.

  • @L1GHT119
    @L1GHT119 7 років тому +1

    The 2018 G80 sport is a far better value than the previous 2015-2016 Genesis models, as they didn’t get this great engine or the free $$$$ thousands in free Sirius, free blue link, free valet service, free maintenance they have on 2017 forward .... the depreciation on them as stated by others allows 1 to buy a $52 k car for $30k 18 months later with best warranty in class , and all the tech Germans costing way more. They handle well but their transmissions aren’t previously very dynamic

    I would lease. Unfortunately due to the current situation Genesis now costs same as any other luxury car so once my lease on the G80 3.8 is over that's it for me. I drove that 3.3T and is an absolute pleasure and fun to drive. Sure it's no M5 but why do you need an M5? Especially here in the US with insanely low speed limits, other than to say I drive an M5.

    The depreciation argument on this vehicle is a moot point. When you consider purchase price and maintenance cost compared to the competition, you are saving tons of money without sacrificing luxury and loaded usable practical options. I paid $48K+ final sale price for my 2018 G80 Sport no money down. If you can point me at a 2018 E-Class & 2018 5 Series with the same numbers options comparable to my G80 Sport I will go buy one right now. Don't worry I'll wait.

    • @NA-du5vm
      @NA-du5vm 7 років тому +2

      The MSRP was 56K+ the dealer countered my OTD price with 49999 plus tax and fees. I had a trade 2016 Accord Touring and that helped a great deal. They're eager to sell and get as much on the road. That same day I bought a 2017 Camaro 2SS for 46K OTD (video of car on my channel). As far as pricing, it's pretty simple and can apply to purchasing any vehicle at any dealer. Shop online, do your research, get an out the door price from multiple dealers within 50-75 miles , test drive, say you'll need a day or so to think about it, buy at the end of month (end of year even better), if you don't want to sell your current car don't take nothing less than 2-2.5k from your highest trade value, get your own financing, once again get your own financing, have a calculator handy to keep track of all the numbers and if things aren't what you want it to then your best move and most powerful move is to walk away.

    Nothing like luxury American cars of the 70'S. Those cars felt like they were floating on air and you could fit a little car under the hood of these giants. Now everything is light and compact so you lose that big luxury feel of the big cars. The only advantage to today's cars is interior technology.

I purchased it used with 81,000 miles on it for $12,500 and could not be happier. Is this still one of the best used sport sedans for the money? I am looking for something in the $25,000 or less price range in the US.

    It is pretty simple to me (older guy that has owned BMW M3, Audi A4, Audi S4, Mercedes E-class over the years) - take a 10 year-old BMW, a 10 year-old Mercedes and a 10 year-old Genesis and see how they're doing. My prediction would be that the Genesis would perform almost like new, the interior of the BMW will be falling in pieces, blown transmission and the engine cooling system will have blown at least one engine. The Mercedes will have almost every electronic system either failed or about to fail, electric seats that don't work , blown air suspension, and various other chassis problems.Oh....and don't forget the problems on the German cars cost an arm and a leg to fix - even if you deem it worth doing - and most people don't with an older German car - that's why they sell for a song on used car sites - lots of hidden problems and a money pit waiting to happen. Thank goodness I have got over my "badge-envy" - I will never buy another German car. Genesis all the way. Unbelievable value for money and great engineering and reliable to boot.

    I've observed this phenom of weight v. power in all vehicles. Manufacturers seem to be touting the benefits of a smaller motor with turbos and fuel efficiency. This is not a realistic approach to performance/fuel economy! There are car makers that have figured it out, but ford has not with the 3.5TT eco-boost! To get it to respond you must get too far into the turbo to get that performance! The results is that the milage suffers whenever the turbos are spooled up! I still prefer a normally aspirated, larger motor over a smaller artificially assisted power adder! The reality is that the fuel milage is closer if all things being equal.

    Of course, if you given the BMW or the Mercs badges to people, we'd all say yes, but if you compared the price of the actual product, I'd go for the Genesis as well. They have definitely improved in so many ways comparing to when they first came out. Having owned a few BMWs and Mercs myself, if the reliability is going to be an issue, the Genesis, equipped with all the options, (and the power it offers nowadays) would be my choice of weapon for the performance aspect and a lot less money. I've been seeing good things from them.

    I am a current 2015 Genesis 3.8 owner. I drove the new 3.3T and 5.0 back to back yesterday. The 3.3 beats the 5.0 hands down. Here's why: The 3.3T reaches peak torque at 1300 RPM, while the 5.0 has to reach nearly 5000 RPM to achieve the same. So for all intents and purposes, the 3.3 makes much better power at "normal" engine operating speeds. If you want the 5.0 to be as fun in the acceleration department as the 3.3T, be prepared to have your foot way down on the accelerator, in order to reach the "big power" engine speeds. No contest in the fun department.... the 3.3T is clearly the winner. Now if I can just get past the black mirrors being the only choice on the Sport. Really not a big fan of that look.

    I would buy this car over a crappy turbo 4 bmw 5 series any day. Those cars are choc full of unnecessary tech that drives up the pricing and the risk of catastrophic breakdown. Also, this car is stunning - absolutely gorgeous inside and out. Where things get complicated however - you could pick up a gently used BMW 550 with m sport for under $40k. That has a twin turbo v8.... that is a harder choice.

    For example, look at Volvo, supercharged AND turbo charged? The same motor in everything? No thanks.

    I own a 2015 Genesis 5.0 ultimate. I picked this vehicle up in March of 2016 for 39k + TTL. The car was brand new with only 16 miles on it. Lets see all you BMW, Lexus or Mercedes do that. Obviously, its not one of the big four brands on the block, but it didn't cost me 80k either. Everyone who sees or rides in the car have nothing but positive things to say about it. I have nothing negative to say. Its quiet, comfortable, loaded and plenty fast. It seems to be well made as I have no issues with mine yet, but it only has about 40k miles on it currently.

    Do you know, or even your best guess, that the G80 Sport will be given the 5.0 Tau motor in the future?
    I can honestly say I was never into labels and have always looked at what was the best value and what was aesthetically pleasing to my eye.
    I owned a 2009 4.6 Genesis Sedan and was laughing all the way to the bank when my friends that drove BMW’s and Lexus couldn’t believe the quality at this price point.
    I traded in that car to Jim Ellis in Georgia and bought a new 15’ model with the 5.0 based on prior ownership. I am ready to trade in my 15’ model for a G80 Sport but want the 5.0 engine simply because I prefer a naturally aspirated engine.
    Do you think it will happen? If not, I’ll wait for the G80 refresh model?

    Excellent review. Would I lease or buy? Likely buy. I think buying is the "cheapest" way to drive in general. My wife drives a 2007 Infiniti M35 Sport which we've owned since new. It has 120K miles on it and I can't pry it out of her hands. When we purchased it, the car was state or the art. But the G80 sport is the car that Infiniti should be building now. If you intend to drive the car for the next ten years; buy it; don't lease. If you need the newest technology every 39 months, then lease it. However, you'll pay more in the long run. I went to the new car show in Tampa two weeks ago and I was very impressed with both the G80 and G90. I was underwhelmed by the German cars and also Cadillac. Especially considering price. Just as the Germans supplanted American luxury cars decades ago and then the Japanese started eating the Germans' lunch: they all better be upping their game as the Koreans seem to be giving them all the competition they can handle.

      I just traded in a 2015 Genesis 5.0 after 2years of ownership due to some revamping of my finances.. In all honesty its one of the best cars i've ever owned besides my 99 Lexus GS400 which i still own. The feel of the buttons and closing of the doors is so solid, the engineers did a fantastic job at creating this vehicle. Everything about this car was amazing.. I was sad to see this car go but excited to see what the G80 will cost in 3 years. As much as I like BMW and MB i'll never own one unless they come with a 10year warranty like the Genesis. If there is one negative about this car i would say that the ride can be a little bumpy on certain roads with the 19'' wheels but on flat roads and the hwy this car is smooth as silk.. I can't wait to own one again.. I tend to keep my cars for awhile except for this particular instance..

      Bo Han like what? Base price for 5 series and e class is 53k. A G80 comes with everything at 56. So you'd be driving around in a 4cyl base model German car with Halogen/mbtex for the price of what you see here.

      Tom h so many people fail to acknowledge the fact that a similarly priced German alternative will be scarcely equipped if not base. And, like you said, it will have fake leather, cheap lightbulbs that belong on a Yaris, and a 4 cylinder. Basically the only option on this car is the color!

      Bobby Parv For many, the mechanicals and construction are just as important. In this area, the build quality is at least on par. The technology, no. But they aren't trying to be a tech leader. Chung Mong-koo said he wanted all Genesis vehicles to act as if they were brand new in 10 years time. This is clearly a desire to use tried and true methods rather than, according to performance chief Albert Biermann, "... to give a hype, to show the technology level." He also said the competition invests too heavily in unnecessary tech.

    As for the 5-series, it all depends on how you spec it, M. I spec'd an i6 540i for 60k. For a $20k increase over the Genesis, I spec'd an M550i Individual, I'd happily fork out the 20k for that one . . . :) .
    As always, excellent work M.

    Nice car and great engine but I will never pay a fixed price for any car and neither do I like their "non-dealership" approach. I also see that thing depreciating way faster than anything it's trying to compete with. I'll pay more for an E43 if I want a mid-size "sporty" sedan. At least it's not hiding it's Hyundai legacy like this one.

      Chris Boyd that e43 will depreciate far quicker and more than the Genesis. The moment you drive that 70-80k Benz off of the lot you will have already lost 8-10k. Not so with the Genesis. Good luck

    • @dylanw9412
      @dylanw9412 7 років тому

      rickgsx1387 agree. Original comment is simply not correct. I even looked at a base Mercedes Benz e350, and if you look at 5 year old models, they are around 20k dollars, less than half of their original selling price. This car depreciates no quicker than anything but maybe a Lexus. And I also looked at genesis pricing but it wasn't really a fair comparison because 5 years ago the genesis sedan was a Hyundai.

    • @chasevineland1508
      @chasevineland1508 7 років тому +2

      I would get the E43. Any car over $40K needs pedigree not just value/resale and features. Pedigree IMHO is history, racing, and industry contributions. When you say I have a Mercedes, people know instantly what it means. When you say I have a Genesis, you have to justify it.

    • @panzer_TZ
      @panzer_TZ 7 років тому +17

      LMAO these comments. Pedigree? Buy a fucking a car because it's a nice car and you like it. If you simply think the Merc and BMW are a better vehicle, buy it because of that. If you're buying a car to impress random people, then you shouldn't buy the car. Paying more money just so other people 'know instantly what it means' has got to be dumbest thing I've heard. Listen to yourselves.

  • @aramiris
    @aramiris 7 років тому +2

    wait wait wait, THIS car has a 3.3 V6 TWIN turbo but produces only 365 hp? and 0-60 in 5.2 secs? WTF, the S60 Polestar only packs a 4 banger with one turbo and gives 367 hp and 0-60 in 4.5 secs. How is this possible? to have a freaking V6 put to shame by an inline 4? what are the genesis engineers doing?, twiddling their thumbs?

    • @dylanw9412
      @dylanw9412 7 років тому +5

      TheArrogantOne and let's see maintenence on the supercharged AND turbocharged 4 cylinder in a few years. That is a lot of stress to constantly put on such a small engine. This one will likely last forever and likely be cheaper to run in the long run

    • @MrCarGuy
      @MrCarGuy 7 років тому +1

      TheArrogantOne No, they're following their strategy of wanting long lasting products. Do you understand the relationship between stresses in an engine versus the time before it needs overhauled or replaced?

    • @GameSteph
      @GameSteph 7 років тому +4

      TheArrogantOne probably power to weight ratio this car is pretty heavy. Take the more compact genesis g70 for example it does 0 to 62 in 4.7 seconds but that's the Korean spec car which is awd and is tuned for Korea's roads which have a lot of speed bumps. The g70 coming to the US will be lighter due to being RWD and will have slightly more horse power due to a sportier exhaust as well as having a sportier suspension. So I imagine 4.5 secs. Genesis engineers know what they're doing, their head is Albert Biermann he was the former chief engineer at bmw M.

    • @aramiris
      @aramiris 7 років тому +1

      only time will tell if this is the reason, and if the genesis engines are more durable, to speculate is foolish, hard numbers are not, and so far the numbers are on volvos side., see ya in 10 years

    • @aramiris
      @aramiris 7 років тому

      +Jun, just a 200 kg difference, volvos are very heavy too, and yes that could explain partly the 0.8 second difference, but not all of it. plus my main question is how the heck do they get just 365 hp from such a large engine, and in that department the car weight is not the explanation, actually its a counter argument, they should put more power on a heavier vehicle.

  • @chasevineland1508
    @chasevineland1508 7 років тому +3

    • @ARentz07
      @ARentz07 7 років тому

      The E43 is certainly appealing on its own, but I would question if it was worth the money. This car is, now that reviews are out, starting to look every bit as much of a good value as I suspected it was when announced. I guess there is some security in getting a Benz - you already know Benz is going to deliver on their brand's implied promise of refinement and driving enjoyment. Yet, this car, sans reputation, promises at least most of that experience for a price cut equivalent to a Nissan Versa's cost (from what I can tell, $13-15k less)... Seems pretty tempting to me.

    • @weirdshibainu
      @weirdshibainu 7 років тому

      Chase Vineland I disagree. ..a Chevy volt costs more than 40 grand as does many cars without pedigree, including minivans.While the Germans build outstanding cars, people buy cars for a variety of reason, not just because of pedigree.
