When I was about 14 I became very ill and missed around 4/5 months of school. When I eventually went back the first things my P.E. teacher (and a few others) said were 'how good I looked' and 'wow, you've lost so much weight. That time off really did you some good'. I've always struggled with my body image and relationship with food and looking back (seven years on) it makes me so disappointed that I was made to believe that my health mattered less than my weight. It's such a dangerous message to pass on. I'm so glad that you're approaching your own weight change and recovery from illness in such a healthy way x

to me, it seems kind of rude to "judge" and make comments on your weight (even though they must have thought those were positive ones), especially if people don't know what happened in your life ^^
my weight changed a lot this past year (i acually have a very similar story to hannah's) and when it happens, you don't really know what to think about yourself bc the image of yourself that you had doesn't add up to how you really are anymore and what people say really matters bc you are kind of lost ^^
i don't know if that was clear but that's how i felt and fortunately, the people around me were great so i'm sorry you had to go through this

You are amazing., I've had 60+ CVAs, strokes. I'm almost completely immobile as well. You both entertain. And amaze me. If You'd like to communicate, my email address is: scienceneversucks.msw@gmail.com. I used to draw, write, photograph, race sailboats and scuba five before my strokes. In my work. Time I was a researcher and scientist. Keep being You, it's awesome!!!!

Katie Walden as someone who has taken strange ways through two different universities, I would suggest using a calendar obsessively. For me, anything that is not in the calendar is not planned at all. Try to give yourself a regular study schedule, with other plans outside that time.
Also, just like Hannah said, never underestimate the power of a good break, but try to do something that activates your brain in a different way. I usually switch to my guitar when I take my breaks.
My ADHD based schedule is "plan stuff with others, study when I don't have plans". I'm not sure I would recommend it to anyone else, but it works for me. It basically only works because I can have a 16 hour work day followed by a day off, without any real problems.

this is a maaaajor issue with me so I don't have a solution so much as things which helped me, but honestly finding a study buddy in a different department to me helped! I spend all my time revising in the electrical engineering building as a chemistry student because I find a) having someone to go to college with makes me go in, because lord knows I try and fail to work at home and b) I find it far more stress inducing being around people who do the same subject as me because they always seem to want to talk about things I haven't properly studied yet! Also working with someone else does make me take breaks, and I get really into daily exercise during revision periods as I'm so much more sedentary than I would be in a lab for example and I personally find it really really helps me to make a good use of the university gym and exercise classes, otherwise I have loads of nervous energy built up which makes it hard to focus. Also I totally cut out caffeine recently (I have severe insomnia so it was a management technique which so far hasn't really helped that much) which helps ease off the nervous energy and actually makes it easier to focus when working. Also, take at least one full day off per week. I find I need it to recharge, sleep in, and also maintain the not so sexy self care things like doing laundry and tidying my house.

The mental health with exams thing i agree with massively, I had 5hrs of aptitude tests for a new job as well as interviews so I had to speak to people and practise as well as other things, it took toll on my mental health so I just switched off and put headphones on or read a book just to get away

Ryan True something that helped me with school was picking up an instrument. I learned that taking 10 minutes breaks and playing the instrument for a 3-5 minutes helps me stay focused and have much less stress.

Andrew Behrend yeah, music helps me a lot, I was working myself into the ground doing 9-14.5hr work days but I'm getting there. Those 5hrs of aptitude tests I was allowed a 5 minute break every hour which killed me haha

As someone who is also 5 foot, I totally agree with the conversations happening over me. What I've found really helps for me is keeping my posture super straight and shoulders back, especially if I'm uncomfortable in the situation (which is so hard because you're already uncomfortable) but this is another way to "compensate" without actually being louder. From my experience it's made me feel more confident purely because I seem more confident so people are more likely to approach me, but also people tend to genuinely just believe I'm taller than I am which, as someone who is still coming to terms with my height, is awesome for my confidence.

On the second question; I am a guy and I am 5'3", and I have found it sometimes is very difficult to be taken seriously, both professionally and romantically. In addition to the points you made about people literally talking over you, I feel like height is correlated with age and maturity in a lot of people's minds

I just want to say that I reeeeally reaaaally appreciate the way that you speak about weight and how you can be healthy at many different weights. I'm chronically ill and my weight fluctuates A LOT dependent on flares because I have a stomach disease so I can go for months where I'm barely able to eat. However, my family is so obsessed with weight and the damaging idea that thin = healthy, successful, happy, etc. I've spent my whole life trying to combat this and adjust my own thinking and language so that I'm not so self loathing and depressed. Once when I was hospitalised for a while and the sickest I'd ever been, my grandma told me that it was worth it and good that I got so sick because I lost so much weight. But I didn't look good, I looked emaciated and sick and horrible. It is wonderful to see how you talk about your body both when you lose and gain weight and it really helps me fight the awful thought patterns I was raised with.

It’s so cool what you said about studying in groups and taking breaks because my friends and I started doing this last summer and it changed our lives. We call it “study group” and we do our summer assignments for advanced placement classes together. We spend a couple hours doing work and snacking and having lunch. Then, we swim for a couple hours either at someone’s house or at pool clubs. It’s awesome, and I love it. 15/10 recommend.

I’m actually a 2nd year uni student currently having CBT and on anti-depressants because the pressure to do well and excel ended up getting way too much for my mental health. Yesss. Study parties are the best. Me and my friends have those and it’s great. I study law, another one is in politics, my best friends in biotechnology, other in engineering and architecture. So we are pretty busy. The way we found to keep hanging out is hosting study parties. Everyone studies their own subject but it keeps everyone motived, involved in each other’s lives and overall productive.

I loved this! the idea of learning new skills during study breaks is so cool! & I would say that I deal with abuse for being a feminist by supporting myself with factual arguments. if I can prove myself right, the abuser often sees where they went wrong. even if they don't, it comforts me to know that I'm standing up for what's right.

I would love love love a whole video about study skills!! I’ve always loved school but recently I’ve started to feel less motivated and overwhelmed I think because my study skills have deteriorated.

I used to get burned out studying in uni, but found studying in coffee shops and taking regular breaks really helped. I hated studying in crowded libraries or on my own in my flat. I had loyalty cards for every coffee shop in Dublin where I studied uni

I definitely want to get more ideas about studying from you! I'd also appreciate advice on how to stay passionate about the subject you're studying when you need to get through boring parts of studying, sitting down day after day to memorize details, waking up at 6am every day etc etc. I love my subject but some of the required classes are not what I want to focus on and it's hard to stay motivated.

''it turns out people are really curious about things they have no idea about.'' yeah pretty much. UA-cam is an ongoing education for me as a way to continue to learn about all the amazing, courageous people in the world. I love hearing people's stories and in a UA-cam video they are so open about it.
You can learn all you need to to satisfy curiousity about a subject without being nosy when in conversation with that person, or be caught off guard. I've learnt about gay adoption, embryo adoption, egg donation, male to female transitioning, female to male transitioning, gay marriage, single mothers by choice, surrogacy, palrenting, lives of flight attendants, doctors, therapists, a whole range of mental health topics (thanks Ted Talks!)...the list goes on.
More importantly, they are human stories. You are hearing someone's emotional experience of something. i LOVE expanding my knowledge in this way...I love knowing how different everyone's journeys are in life and how they can live their best, true self. I think you are amazing, Hannah x
