Yeah the MG42 had a major psychological effect on allied troops. The Americans nicknamed it the Buzzsaw, because of its effectiveness at cutting down allied soldiers. It could fire 1500 rounds per minute, but this had to be in short bursts because if they held onto the trigger for too long the heat would cause the barrel to melt off

I recently saw somebody comment on another reaction to this that the MOST terrifying sound of WW2 was to be in your foxhole somewhere in the Pacific or East Asia and hear the scream of "BANZAI!"...I tend to agree.💯✌

That and also if you were a German during the battle of stalingrad or battle of Moscow and you heard the russian being spoken not far from your trench.
