Battery powered chainsaw made from Junk

- I've been thinking about getting a battery powered chainsaw for a while so I can utilize the excess power from my hydro turbine, but they are still too expensive.
So I made my own using an old petrol chainsaw with a blown engine and a dc motor from a broken boat winch.
I can't wait for the next episode where Marty has been thinking about a perpetual motion machine to power everything ever. He makes his own out of a broken Labrador retriever and an industrial sowing machine from the 1930's that he had lying around.
Those XT60 connectors are handy! I soldered in a splitter with 6 of them off of the 12v supply in my car that feeds the cigarette lighter plug. It runs the dash cam, ham radio, and 5amp USB plug with room for expansion! Out of sight and won't wiggle loose.
I'm somewhere between amazed & delighted at what Marty can do and disgusted with my own inadequacies and lack of ability.
Well done Marty 👍 for just one minuets I thought you were going to carry two 12 v battery in a back pack to run the saw lol. Great use of a spare electric motor. Very interesting viewing Tom uk
Genius. I love your mind. I'm 60yrs old and grew up in Rhodesia where we couldn't always get what we wanted or needed and had to make modified items. But I didn't ever do anything like this. Thanks Marty for sharing
Thanks. Take care of yourself
I’ve been hanging out for a Marty T episode & didn’t let me down 👍👍👍 one of the best shows on the tube.
From here in Cornwall (the UK one), I am going to offer you a big hearty handshake for your great little project, your interesting videos, and finally, your choice of Premier. Damn, Marty...we've only got Boris, and who wants to look at, or listen to, him? Well-flippin'-done, mate.
Marty: “hand me a wrench.”
Cameraman: “what size?”
Marty: “doesn’t matter, I’m going to use it as a hammer.”
We've all been there. You know exactly where the hammer is, but CBF walking to the other side of the shed to get it.
Every tool has a hammer side🤣👍🇦🇺
What size would you like me to give you marty? -a big one
the age of ingenuity just moved up a level by a NZ 'no 8 wire' expert!!!
for the trigger use a 20v cordless drill trigger it will also give you variable speed for the small stuff
I don't think you need variable speed for a chainsaw. The faster, the better, within reason.
@@herrakaarme I use small 2 stroke stihl all the way up to a 250CC 4 stroke chainsaw with massive chew bars every day and you don't start a cut on full power you get it started then hit it having control will also help prevent you from cutting your self into a jam on particularly sticky wood (fruit trees and nut trees mostly)
@@endurofurry You might be right, but when writing the comment, I was just thinking about the Stihl battery powered chainsaw I've rarely used. It even has a very delicate chain to help it eat through the wood. The corded electric Stihl I've used far more has a chain more like any regular chainsaw, but it doesn't have a variable speed either, and seems to work perfectly.
But then again, I'm not exactly a chainsaw expert. The one thing I would never want to happen is the chain jamming in the middle of the wood. Chain speed helps with that. Back in the day when I was googling info for selecting electric chainsaws, mostly the recommendation was to avoid models with very low chain speeds.
Any momentary switch not an off and on switch, if this thing falls from your hands for any reason it needs to switch itself off.
Great to see you back Marty-gyver... 3 weeks is a longtime lol...👍🏼👍🏼🔨🔧🍻
Marty does amazing work !!!
Absolutely perfect for emergency gear in a vehicle for off road or off grid living = ) Hope you and yours are safe and well Marty.
Dead wood is tougher than live wood. In some cases. Love tthe fact you finished it. Nice work.
Respect the stick welds! Great video, you do well at holding interest throughout it.
I don't know where you come up with these ideas but if there was another world war and everything went to heck in a handbasket I pray someone like you was in my group.
FUQ a group
Wife gave me an Oregon battery chainsaw 5-6 yrs ago as gas one was 'too loud'. Never used it but a few yrs later needed a
leaf blower and got the Oregon variant using same battery: a 36v 2amp hr and a 2d 4 amp hr. The blower runs about 4-5 min
per amp hour. This is enough to blow off the drive way until the leaves get to the several cubic yd volume, then I need both
batteries. So your experience correlates with mine, batteries don't last long per charge.
I had that exact chainsaw as a kid here in the states. I swear it looked like it was in the same condition as yours. I got it used from a relative and as I remember it was a real chore keeping that motor running consistently.
Making something from very little , just right , improvisation on a theme . All clever stuff . Top man Marty .
Another McIver moment from Marty T.
Thanks for sharing.
So your the guy I keep hearing about when people refer to "kiwi ingenuity". I hope your resourcefulness catches on and inspires more people to follow suit. Bloody legend.
The movie Evil Dead springs to mind looking at that saw! Awesome!
Marty if we still had a $5 note... I'm sure you could expect to see your face on there some time soon. Love your great Kiwi Number 8 wire mentality!
Awesome build, watch out for kickback.
top marks for ingenuity... great way to re-purpose old nonworking equipment. keep up the great work.
Congratulations Marty with another fine job completed. Cheers Steve
Gee, I have an old chain saw , and a 12v winch . Next weekends project . Thank you , I just never thought about making a chain saw
You can do it!
The quality of ingenuity of this guy is soooOOO AMAZING!!
Love it Marty!!!! 😁👍👍
you’re actually a smart bloke aye😂 and that saw got more out of it than i was expecting
The Frankensaw. "Attach the electrodes, Igor". "It lives!"
Greetings from Canada! That looks more like late 70's vintage.
Definitely worth doing and like you said... you had the parts lying around... so why not!
Nice one Marty ! I have the very same (slightly later) model of that saw. Saved it from the local recycling center ! Been neglected for a number of years but I was able to get it to run again after taking it apart, freeing stuff up and cleaning it. It sure is a LOT louder than you electric one !
Maybe use a relay to bypass the switch just to unload some Amps from it? Add an emergency stop just in case it goes haywire or locks up? Two switches for the relay in series maybe? It is nicely done but needs a tiny bit more safety than none at all
Marty is the Andrew Camarata of New Zealand.
Hell yeah props for..A.C. i wonder if he will use that chainsaw for his dash on his truck...lol 😆
hahah., ya know what, your right. :)
Totalmente de acuerdo
Camarata is the Marty of USA
Marty is way better at it, let’s be honest
This is amazing to me. Makes a usable chainsaw out of a bunch of broken parts. If we ever have an apocalypse I hope I have someone like you around. Totally cool project.
For all the repurposing I've watched you do, this is by far the most accessible and inspirational.. Just don't tell Mr McCulloch 👌👌
Marty is a smart man. I always think of him as a mad scientist.
Ha! Saw the thumbnail and thought this was going to be a review of Dewalt's cordless chainsaw.
What an amazingly clean chainsaw you've got there, Marty. Not even any stray oil in the casing.
Good to see you back! Gonna watch this one shortly while I kick my heels in work for an hour waiting on other people. I might learn something.
Genius Marty, love how you make "something from nothing".
In the best No8 Kiwi tradition Marty, even Mustie 1 would be proud of you.
UA-cam was made for innovative guys like you Marty and guys like me to lap it up well done superb entertainment. I've just finished refurbishing my lawn mower inspired by your work and I felt really good cutting the grass with a fully functional tool, stay safe and well.
Good to see you back, only hope things are ok , stay safe.
That was a great way to refit that old saw, well done!
Dude... nicely done.
Nice job man! I always love it when I come across someones UA-cam site- who thinks like I think!
I used to own one of those yellow devils it hated me with a passion, it worked in the shed but as soon as I went camping or 4 wheeling and needed it, no go every time so I swapped it for a six pack of beer and bought a Stihl, happy days ever since👍🍻
I Love the 1 Handed 80s chainsaw s. Especially the mac 10 and my homelite xl
This looks so great! Well done sir!
Nice job man. Smart and innovative. You'd make a hell of an engineer or even a technician
The best thing to upgrade a Mini Mac. Starts the first pull too.
Very satisfying to watch.
Loved the POV chainsaw massacre at the end. Reminded me of Doom.
Cheers.
You sir are a mad scientist/genius and I love watching your videos!
That is great. I love seeing tools getting new life.
that was what i noticed in your chainsaw review. you did not have a little 12 inch blade saw for limbing trees. i dont have a lot of experience with chainsaws, but i did cut firewood to heat my house for a couple years. names did not matter, function or
failure did. i have no need for something that only works 10 minutes. id rather use hand tools. great build. great video thanks marty
10/10 for ingenuity Marty.
Way cool, nice use of an old eger beaver by McCulloch...very impressive.
I enjoy watching your projects there very useful and a great learning tool.
Marty that a great job for a home made battery chainsaw 👍👍👍
That worked better than I thought it would! Very nice work! Thanks for sharing.
Dear Marty T.
👍👌👏 Ingenious well done again and as always, Sir! Congrats! In my opinion that's exactly the way how to do if you have time and all the pieces for free. Because running with 12 V it is very variable and can also be driven by a car battery respectively a running car for instance. Much better than all that expensive high voltage crap you can buy. Your modified chainsaw is pretty perfect for sawing smaller stuff (to clear from branches etc.). Please kindly allow me to suggest: You could/should add this common kind of fork/rake/teeth that bites into the wood. With this the work is definitely easier and safer too.
Thanks a lot for making teaching recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and health.
If you want longer run times, all though you got through a impressive amount!
If you have a tool of choice, ryobi Milwaukee Makita etc and have a few batteries. You could use a dead or unused tool to make a battery holder and battery contact part and use the batteries you already have.
18 volt should run that motor just fine but slightly heavier cables and beefier connections will
Help.
Run it for a while with everything a bit loose then feel all the wires and connections and see if anything is hot. Thats a concern.
Using the modern batteries of modern tools where you can hot swap them will help a lot.
I have a brushless ryobi one 18 v ( used up a non brushless one first) and up to its bar length and as long as the chain is sharp it is very good. As soon as the blade is slightly dulled i give it in as you cant force them.
Great vid
Wow Marty! Another inspirational project.. Thank you so much for posting..
Epic build! I've welded a socket onto an old bottle jack so my cordless impact now operates the jack as well as removing tyres and parts.
Picked up a 3d printed battery receptical for Milwaukee batteries to power an old car air compressor. You can get them for Makita, Dewalt, and, Ryobi, not sure about tool pro. Hot melt glue one of those suckers to the back or the chainsaw for longer run times and easy swap out.
Clever ideas
Marty, you are a bloody marvel. Thank you for all your ingenuity.
Got to be one of the BEST videos I’ve seen bar none. Very smart dude 🤤
Great watching things getting done. Too many selfie UA-cam sites with 2 minutes of the work and 15 minutes of presenter glam shots. Thanks.
"FrankenSaw" lives! Excellent repurpose.
Marty you never cease to amaze me oh, I had the same exact same chainsaw I cut many a tree up with out on the bayou's in Texas. Yeah after a big storm and they would blow down some oak trees we would go out and parts them up and then sell them in winter time for firewood but that little chainsaw never let me down. Great video Marty
Great job, love the approach of just using parts you already had!
Nice build Marty keep up the great vids👍
Careful with the rope trick on an engine you want to save. Make sure the piston is over the ports on a 2 smoke and on compression stroke for a 4 stroker. I share your affection for the old iron, I have a 1953 IH TD-9 for acreage maintenance. Great videos!
Nice job. Surprised me that so few batteries managed a 7 or 8 minute use.
So glad you're back 😊👍I really enjoy your videos. Please make more please 😊👍🍻🍻.
Sharp might help with it too. Awesome conversion man
Yayyyy. Amongst all the crazy that the world is at the moment, Marty comes along to show us that good old kiwi ingenuity is alive and well up in the Marlborough sounds. Thank you thank you thank you.
Great little pruning saw.
Excellent adaptive reuse.
Im actually impressed. It's probably better quality than a cheaper store bought one.
Gotcha, I really like the country side you live in. Seems a good wholesome place to raise a family
Very neat to repurpose and recycle. Some friends of mine once made a motorcycle from a bicycle using a chainsaw engine. It wasn't very fast, only went about 10 mph, but it was fun to build. 🚲
Nice, me and a friend made one of those when we were at school, it had a bit of string for a throttle, clutch outer driving the front wheel, it did about 40kmh but it wasn't safe
Love your work Marty.
Really love to "motor marking" trick.... I would have figured it out for hours somehow else :D Thanks for this genius trick!
I think Id use grease next time, it gives a more accurate mark
very good .. better than expected on the batteries
I bought a Oregon brand about 10 years ago, with an extra battery. Cost all was about $400.00. Seems like a lot, except I’ve not put a single drop gas in it, some bar oil, and used it to cut up fallen trees on driveway, shrub cutting, pruning trees, etc. it gives mr about 45 minutes of cutting power, thus the extra battery needed. For my use I’ll never crank on a gas chainsaw again.
best use of junk award goes to Marty, good job brother!👏👏👏👍👍👍
Bloody genius! Might want to fit an isolator switch and matched lipos though. Very very very cool
Oh and a low voltage alarm
This is the kind of engineering I can appreciate, for it reminds me of watching an old friend of mine at work on various projects. This is also far better than my dad's engineering, for he thought JB Weld would fix aaaanything (kind of like folks that use acc/Super Glue in the wrong amounts or applications). lol
This was great!
Only Marty can do amazing things like tbis
Hi Marty
It’s widely believed we don’t do much experimenting because we could fail and look stupid so we draw inspiration from your vids , be happy stay lucky 🍀
By the late 70's the McCulloch had a chain brake/ safety handle, so this is probably older than you think . With chain brake safety this would be a hell of a lot safer/ greater peace of mind.
You could wire a safety wire to chain brake so that with brake engaged, there is no power, much as most modern power tools eg skilsaw , grinders etc require a safety and trigger depressed to work
Great idea, well worthwhile as a proof of concept
Cheers
Come on children
Gather round
Grab some popcorn
And sit down
Hush yourselves and listen well
Marty has a tale to tell
He’s a guy who loves to tinker
Is handy, smart and a thinker
Here’s a saw, what a useful tool
He made it from junk
That’s the Marty rule

I have the Batteries, the saws. What am i waiting for. Perfect for camping. Quite
WE USE TO HACE A 12 CORDED CHANSAW THAT YOU COULD HOOK TO A TRUCK , JUST LIVE TRUCK OR CAR RUNNING. I WISH I HAD IT NOW.
VERY COOL THANKS FOR SHARING
THANKS FOR SHARING FRIEND!!!
Where did I put my ear defenders?
THAT IS VERY COOL!!!!!!!
That's a really nice antique adjustable hammer you got...
My father gave me that hammer spanner, it is a family heirloom
dang marty your a genius.
"they won't even notice one or two gone....." You better hope so. ha!
Why would he worry? He has a chainsaw now! Well, another one!
Jim's videos He has heaps so there’s no certainty the kids won’t come at him armed with even larger and more powerful saws.
I was always looking for the white one so I'd notice lol
Until they see it in the shed then Run dad RUN 😂
Looks like it'd be ideal for pruning when you just don't want to dig out the big saw looks better than some of the store-bought battery powered chainsaw and way cheaper even if you had a buy all the part to make it
