We want our horses to be able to load in and out of a trailer without thoughts of concern, without anxiety, without feeling like they need to defend themselves against the request asked of them, and without rushing in or out.
Pay attention to your horses when trailer loading, if they show any signs of not feeling totally comfortable with the process, they may be difficult or refuse to load if they are in a strange place, or with another person, or there is another horse nearby, for example. It's our job read their body language and to communicate to them how to load safely and with ease.
This horse shows us a prime example of "where the horse is looking - there goes their body".
This horse needed to release his defensive thoughts and posture, and release his concerns about the threshold of the trailer going in and going out.
What a change can happen when the horse finally accepts the threshold (the step up into the trailer) of the trailer, and realises it was no big deal.

Darn good job Dennis. You really read the horse right and helped settle the mind.

I’m glad you were able to see the change in the horses mind . Would you agree that this is where the change has to take place first or the results won’t come ?

How long did it take for this horse to travel quietly in the trailer? I going to bet he paws at traffic lights and coming into a driveway before being unloaded. Mine will load nice for me, but he is all sweaty when we unload because he is so anxious traveling alone in a trailer. Any help for that?

Sometimes letting one be loose in the trailer or letting them ride backwards will help . He needs more hauling likely too .

My trailer is a straight load with a ramp. Could you give me suggestions, i don't have the ability to open the trailer up as in this video.
Im either inside coaxing or sending from the outside.

I use the same technique to load into a straight load trailer . Just be sure to let him find complete release when there is a hint of try . He’ll likely want to back out before you ask for it , if he does then send him back in with more energy and again reward the try with release . He’ll get it if you don’t get in a hurry

@@cappelhorsetrainingandshoeing I have a ramp. Sometimes he gets to the trailer edge and quits. If I try sending him too strong he tries to avoid the trailer and shoots towards me 😧

Dennis has a playlist of Trailer Loading training… there’s one video there where he uses a tarp on the floor, I found that helped with a horse that was nervous to go onto the ramp. I did work with her over that as Dennis shows in that other video and then moved it to the ramp. Take a look out for that video … if you click “more” to open the description of this video you should find a link to the Trailer Loading playlist
