Rained all day twice this week, (Thursday now), so it looks wonderful in December where you were. All of my trips somehow end up with one of those rides where we're legging it through the gloom at the end of the day trying to make the hotel before being swallowed up by darkness. Then the magical, restorative powers of beer and hot food. Keep them wheels turning, Josh.
I did this with a mate in 1973 as follows, we did it on two secondhand Raleigh road bikes with bog standard 1960s/70s components and chrome 27/1 1/4" wheels. They cost £10 each. We did Athens, Sounion round the east Attic coast to Marathon, back to Athens. Athens to Corinth day 1. Corinth to Nafplion day 2. via Mycaene. Nafplion to Leonidian day 2. Leonidian to Kosma up in the mountains day 3. Kosma to Sparta day 4. Sparta to Olympia (cheating) by bus. Olympia to Patras day 6. Ferry to Corfu. All roond north coast of Corfu including Mt Pantocrater. A lot on unmetalled roads. One wheel had to be trued in Leonidian. All went well. It was in August temperatures 30-35° quite dangerous. Greece isn't a cycling nation. People aimng to follow should be aware of the physical dangers inv😅lved including extremely dangerous dr😅vers and heavy traffic on roads. In the 1970s roads were blissfully empty but we used back roads as far as possible. These new highways are boring, not proper cycling. Good luck with your cycling. a bike is for life. I'm still cycling on a Trek and a restored 1970 Dawes Galaxy😊
Really enjoyed this video. I haven ride the roads around Kalamata, and would say that the ride from Kalamata to Sparta should be on everyones bucket list rides.
I have family in Athens, and have visited the Peloponnese several times in the past; it’s beautiful. Do I trust this is going to be on the Glorious Gravel list for next year? Also how did you find the vegan options? I understand Athens has become a lot more progressive in recent times. Cafe du Cycliste is a good sponsor btw - I am currently testing one of their audax jerseys and it’s amazing. Cheers!
Nope not part of the Glorious Gravel events but is a mega spot for cycling. The vegan options were pretty good. Always something in the supermarkets, very good restaurants in Athens and good options in non veggie places in the Peloponnese.
@@Josh-Reid Sorry, i wrote that comment before watching it all the way through (and engaging my brain), and i realise this was all road riding! Looks brilliant, I am going to Athens next year - would love to do some riding there. Btw you were brave to ride out of Athens… terrible roads/drivers.
Having been born in Athens, having lived there most of my life (almost) there and in Kalamata, having driven through the roads of Athens you've used, can I just express my awe for the size of your b*lls for riding there? Chapeau!

Epic ride, nice video, love it.
Freddie took Art History in college. Nice video Josh. You videos get better with time. Like fine wine.
Great group of guys and one of your best vids. Thanks

Being on the road makes for exciting adventures

Thanks lads very jealous chapeau 🤙🍻
Nicely produced video Josh, what time of year is this? Summer would be brutally 🥵
Summer would be brutal. It was November so pretty perfect for some winter sun.

You guys could take this show to Sicily. Lots of Greek temples there also.
amazing!!!
Great Video! I am planning a similar trip in May. Is your route available on komoot?
7:33 ... 2980M elevation in Greece ... more than the highest mountain in Greece, Olympus, ... those are not bicycles it's Icarus airline
2980m is the total elevation of the days riding. Sorry if it’s confusing.
Good to see Ryan Sidebottom has taken up cycling.
A great trip
What’s your take on a surly long haul trucker touring bike?
Having been born in Athens, having lived there most of my life (almost) there and in Kalamata, having driven through the roads of Athens you've used, can I just express my awe for the size of your b*lls for riding there?
Chapeau!
Choco big FTW!!!! 🤣
Hi Josh, how did you arrange for storage of your bike boxes whilst you were touring?
We contacted a hotel and they were happy to store the bikes for us whilst we went touring and then stayed at the same hotel at the end of the trip.
Good views of Greek countryside. They're a bit too fond of their own faces.
