Jim Thornton's wife asked him one time "Jim, do you still love me?" he replied " I love you since you were sweet sixteen". She said "That sounds like a love song, why don't you write one. He took up the gauntlet and this song was the result. It became the first million dollar sheet music sale. Remember, we're talking about a time when there was no recordings.
I loved this beautiful song so much, it was the first poplar when I first learned to play the clarinet. I got the sheet music and played it at home for my Mom. This was in 1948. She cried and said it was the most beautiful song she had ever heard. I was 15 years old and it is still one of my favorites.
this music makes me yearn to get "home" as soon as possible. though only an "nth" Irish, i feel it in my core. i love this sound and this song. thank you for posting.
I first heard this from Joseph Locke and it touched my heart. After hearing many, many versions, I have to state that this version from Tommy Fleming has beaten them all by far. The feeling he puts in to this beautiful song surpasses all. It should be in a weepy movie.
many memories here for lots of people...I grew up listening to my dad sing this to my mother ...The irish are a talented nation and have produced wonderful music.....I've played it back three times and I'm going to listen to it again when I've sent this ..thanks for posting.....this must be one of the most beautiful songs ever written........from England.
Tommy's version may be the best of this classic song that has been performed by so many of the greats for generations. Thank you Tommy for touching so many of us again with your heavenly voice.
"When You Were Sweet Sixteen" was written in 1898 by Irish-American composer James Thornton. Thank you for posting this excellent version by Tommy Fleming. I played this clip in one of my ESL classes on music vocabulary as an example of a tenor. It's my favorite tune, and Fleming's version has enough of a pop sound to appeal to young folks. The score sounds similar to The Fureys version of the early 1980s.
The first time I ever heard this song was in the film, 'The Jolson Story,' which was made in 1946. There's a scene, set in the early 1900s, where the young Al Jolson sings it. I saw this as a boy and have loved the song ever since. (The scene is on youtube: 'The Jolson Story' part 2)
WHAT A LOVELY SPECIAL THING TOMMY, IT TAKES US BACK TO DAYS OF OLD AND I THINK OF MY GRANDPARENTS AND MY GRANDFATHER SINGING THIS TO MY GRANNY AND SHE WAS 82 AT THE TIME, BOTH GONE AND SO REMEMBERED, FOR THEIR LOVE GOES ON.

What a beautiful song. I'm surprised someone like Bieber or New Direction doesn't cover this for all their "Sweet Sixteen" fans!
Lovely rendition, but listen to the Furey's version, the banjo alone will make you cry.......
listen to Perry.

as much as I love Tommy. I think the Furyes version is better. sorry. I can listen to Tommy all day.
Tommy has a great voice, but I thing Al's version is by far the best.
