Those hair scrapers where can I find some?
Where can I buy a scalding vat?
And this is why COMMUNITY sufficiency is so important. What a beautiful tradition!
AMEN!!!
This is the best way to train your children how to work, it thrilled my heart to see the young man scrapping the hog. We as Americans need to go back to the old pathways of life
I agree
For me, the old ways are the best ways.
That is my first time to watch a hog butchering at age 87. I have to say it was one of the most interesting things I have ever seen. Thank you for sharing this and many other facets of your homesteading life.
yeah im 67 and this was very interesting video, never seen hog butchering........
My mom talked about hog killing day and said they all looked forward to it despite all the hard work. It meant food on the table. And fellowship too! Thank you for showing us how it’s done, God bless y’all !!!!
WOW! No apologies needed. This video was so informative. I have nothing but admiration for everyone involved.
Nice to see real homesteaders hard at work....it takes a LOT of work to be close to your food. So many have lost that.
Thank you
Pop is a OLD Hickory surgeon splitting that carcass. So awesome to y’all’s son getting to help. That’s way we were raised
Generations and community. Knowledge passed down. So very important. I am grateful that these things are not being lost. Thank you.
NOW That's What I'm Talkin ABOUT... Family You can see it all day on video BUT in Real Life... GO Figure... Y'All Are Authentic And The BEST teachers... HANDs ON I'd and others Would Pay $300 to Experience the REALITY of One example of 'How To" BLESS YOU
thank you!
Brought back memories of my childhood .one thing I remembered was the huge 3 legged black pot ccooking the lard out of at least one of the hogs so all us kids could have cracklings . Tank you.
Country boy can survive! That was an awesome video and very informative. Thank you and I just love your page content because you folks are real
I appreciate that!
Our Dad would butcher our pig each year back in the 50 s growing up in SE Kentucky, I remember all the. Neighbors coming to help. Watching this really makes you appreciate where our pork comes from today.
In my community everyone used to butcher, nowadays hardly nobody does, keep teaching them little ones,so it’s not a forgotten tradition!Great job &video Thanks Butcherman59
Brings back memories of my grandparents. All that sausage i can smell it cooking on the stove now .also remember grandma having those dried red peppers hanging up by the stove for the sausage those were the days😊😊😊
I remember going to my great Aunt Babe’s farm. I never saw what the men were up to, but remember the women all worked to have a huge meal ready for them. It was a very farm community event-grannies and grandpa’s, kids, everybody worked together. I think modern people have almost completely lost this important survival skill. There is strength in community when times are hard.
Man what a great life you guys have . I remember a little when I was young my grandparents had hog killing. But as the ten children left home and they got up in age that stopped. You folks are blessed to keep this going and teaching your kids the Value of life . I know it’s hard work but the rewards are well worth it.
We are carrying on this tradition from my husbands family that I believe we are the 3 generation. His grandma, grandpa, dad, uncles did this growing up. Sadly, his grandad passed before we butchered our first hogs. His grandma made sloppy ham potpie the day of and now our family raises our own hogs, butchers with his uncles and dad. I make a pot of sloppy ham pot pie. We cook down our fat and can the lard. Eat hot fresh cracklins salted and have a big pot of scrapple cooking ❤️We cure our own bacon, season our own sausage and its just the best! Its such a good feeling!!
Glad to hear yall are keeping up the tradition! Thats awesome!! I'm interested in hearing more about this sloppy ham potpie :)
We enjoy it even with all the work involved. The sloppy ham pot pie is what we call it around here in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. It's really a flat noodle made with flour, water, egg, salt, and rolled really thin. You cook your country ham diced in pieces, make a broth, and season the broth with pepper. Once it's warmed you add in your dough pieces cut into 1x4' strips and they cook in the broth. Eventually it all gets really thick and it's delicious! My FIL eats his with tomato juice but we like it just like.
I honestly thought I would not be able to watch this … but I did. Great video & narration.
Watching this video brought back memories of a time when my my mom's parents had what we called butchering day. Long day of working to provide meat for a large family. My mom was one of 11 so when we gathered at grandma and grandpa's house for a meal there were many mouths to feed. After a time my mom and dad took over the butchering day and as time went on my brother. My son now does the job. Traditions learned and passed down are so important! Thanks for sharing!
We had an Italian farmer who would always come over to collect the blood for making Blood Sausage, it was good too. Nothing wasted.
I like how you involve your children. That little boy was at the front right along with the men scraping the hair off the pig, learning along the way.
Brings back memories. Thanks for keeping the tradition alive.
I think this tradition is picking up more so than it had for 30, 40 years. We always do our own butchering what ever it is . We can everything, but we hear more people doing it than we had for a long time. All my old timers were self reliant that was just life. Great video, really enjoyed it.
I think so too
❤❤🎉 I love this!! My husband walked in when you were saying about the hair, he had a story I couldn’t share, but said he was Jacob, back in the day 😂❤ I love that Jacob has taken to learning everything he can & gives good tips and advice for us viewers! Like the pepper makes you sneeze 🤧 if you have never used a lot of pepper before you can’t know that❤ thank y’all again for another amazing video ❤ sharing your experience and knowledge 🎉
Reminds me of when I was a kid. Grandpa had a farm over in Jackson county next to the reservation and on the first real cold day in November he'd slaughter a hog. He had a big metal barrel to dip the hog in before the scrapin and granny had a grinder on the end of the smokehouse table she'd use to grind up the meat for sausage. They let me turn the handle and she'd cut up the meat into chunks so they'd fit into the top. She never froze it, she canned it and it was some of the best sausage I've ever had. I remember the hams hanging in the smokehouse but I don't know if they smoked them or if they used your method of salting them up for country ham. Thanks for the video. That brought back some great memories. I'm glad there are still some folks out there keeping our traditions alive. Pap and granny would be proud.
Brings back my childhood❤
love the old ways. We are getting ready to do our hogs next week.
I grew up in the South Carolina Low Country. Daddy was a country boy; momma was a city girl but at one point her father had a butcher shop. Anyway, most country people had their own chickens for meat and eggs, maybe a cow, had huge vegetable gardens; some raised hogs and cattle for meat for personal use and to sell.
My daddy's momma, Mama Craven would, every late fall, would make sausage for the butcher next door.
Of course us kids were right in the thick of it. I miss those times.
My family done this when I was growing up but it has been years since I have. We sugar cured it. There is nothing like red eye gravy made from the drippings from it. Watching your video brings back a lot of great memories.
I agree red eye gravy, ham, eggs and biscuits is my favorite meal
This sure brought back memories memories of my Grandpa, he owned a butcher shop back in 70’s, I watched him cut up all kinds of meat and package it up. Great memories ❤
That was my first time to see a hog butchering. I dam 87 yrs. Old. I have to say it was one of the most interesting videos I have ever seen. Thank you for sharing this and many other things from your homesteading life.
Thanks 👍
We all can benefit from the old ways. Thanks for posting.
Loved seeing everyone working together, and enjoying the fellowship. Thank you for sharing this. Very interesting
Great video and enjoyed the process. Wish I could have been there to actually see it all done. Thank You
LOVE THAT Y'ALL ARE SHOWING THIS AS I HAVE NEVER SEEN IT DONE.... KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
God bless yall from Alabama!!! I love listening to grandaddy talk about how to do these hogs and all the old times ways they used to do bout everything. Surely trying to pass some on down to my son. He's a good boy and he's into it so thank GOD!!!!!
God that brings back memoreys from when i was a kid living up north im glad to see pepole still doing this. Thanks for sharing.
You kids are my heroes.
well thank you
❤What a spectacular setup for hog butchering !!
Thank you
Hard working community! So satisfying to watch, but can only imagine the sense of pride and accomplishment you must feel. I can say I’m a little jealous😊❤
Honestly I think there's more pride in knowing we're keeping on with the ways grandpa and grandma done, and of course its always awesome knowing EXACTLY where the meat on your plate came from and how it was handled
Now that’s a real life community! Generations of knowledge and absolutely loved every second. We’ve lost a lot of that here. I hate watching the old ways disappear. In a lot of cases I’m looked at as someone holding onto the past. But in my opinion losing these types of things is what is killing America. Good old fashioned know how and community togetherness.
AMEN!
Been interesting in learning how this is done enjoyed watching family and friends hard at work enjoying what their doing and each other
It's most definitely a way of life that is dying out. Keep it going for your children.
Neat video! We are raising our first pigs that will be processed this early spring. We would love to do this someday. Right now, we don't have the equipment to process, so we are taking them in to get processed. But it will be so nice to have our own pork! ❤
Fascinating. Really enjoyed it. I love seeing how things are done that I've never seen before. Can't wait to see how the country ham video comes out. I hope UA-cam let's it stay up. Now I'm hungry.
hopefully so, they actually flagged this video to begin with then had to review it
Brought back great memories for me, thank you so much, God bless you 🙏
Andy, it so nice you let Jacob light the fires so he has a part in the processing of pigs. The sausage, hams and other cuts will taste so good for future meals. Blessings to all of you folks.
Totally great video. You took a life, but did so respectfully and responsibly. A professional job.
Wish there was a love button❤
Yall have become my favorite UA-cam family and channel.❤
This is a great video!
Yall post wonderful content from the kitchen to the pig killings.

Awesome to actually see that. Thank you so much.😊
love the old ways.
Thank You
Never seen hog scraper used here in mountians we uae butcher knives. Leafn every day about things great video we butcner our hog meat
ive seen people use everything from a garden hoe to a canning lid, but them hog scrapers sure do make it easy
Excellent video! We are thankful we got to experience this with yall.
Boy is that a lot of work!!!
Such a wonderful way of life you all live; and keeping the skills and way of life alive with having the kids helping, it's how we learn. We did our best with what we remembered and learned and at this stage, we've brought our family together with three generations cutting and wrapping and now curing and smoking our own meat.
Sure brought back a lot of memories.
Great video
Thanks for sharing.
Loved seeing everyone working together to process those hogs. Some were learning and some work working for their families food. You all made a great video. Stay safe and thanks for sharing with us. Have a Happy and Blessed New Year. Fred.
thank you for watching
WOW This is AWESOME Thank yall so much. GOD bless you all ❤😊
❤️I watched this in its entirety…I guess I have my big girl panties on this morning😂 Boy do I love country ham however due to heart failure I have to cut way back on sodium. I remember my Step-Mamaw and Mama canning some of their sausage. They rolled the sausage in balls and the fat would rise to the top of a quart jar. Haven’t seen it like that in a very long time but it was very good. They did it the other way, like you, as well. Love the way your community comes together. As the Amish say, “Many hands make light work!” Of course, this was very hard work as best but sure will be worth it. Bless each of you. ❤️🙏🏻🐖
This is a great video.
Another great video that I really enjoyed!! Took me back to my childhood growing up in NC. Y’all have got to be from NC, you sound like everybody did growing up. And I still do… lol I still remember the smell of the seasoning going in the sausage and the country hams in the meat house! I didn’t appreciate it then but realize what a blessing it was to grow up that way now at 50 years old. Thanks again for all the wonderful videos!!
Yes we are in NC, can’t miss the accent lol
I have helped do this a lot myself when I was younger. Watching this made me miss having some of my father-in-laws ham.
Thank you for a trip down memory lane ,hoping to get back to it in a few years.
THANK YOU FOR SHARING, YOUR WORK WITH US , HAVE NEVER SEEN HOW HOGS WERE BUTCHERD , GORDON BOARD FROM CALGARY ALBERTA CANADA 🇨🇦
What a WONDERFUL WAY OF LIVING! God bless and be with all of you. ❤
I miss those days I’ve not done it in the last 25 years but we all would get together and have a great time my grandad made the youngest measure the tail with there finger and bump there elbow just good times
Man that brings memories with my Grandfather years ago Thank you. Jimmy from NC
Thank you for helping keep the real Appalachian skills alive. Happy new year and God bless and keep you all.
Thank you! someone has too because they are dying out way too fast! happy new year!
Thanks for sharing old ways are disappearing
Watching another video from Northern California , I’m loving every minute of it ! ❤🙏
Really enjoyed watching this video. I can remember my papaw and uncles at hog killing time. That was more than 70 yrs ago. Hung hogs from big sycamore tree. That was in November as it got cooler. Thanks for the memories.
I would love to come have a staycation with yaw
God bless America 🇺🇸
I remember as a kid rendering fat into lard. It was not an easy job cooking that lard over a woodstove and it seemed like it was in the middle of July. Memories.lol.
WOW, that was amazing!! I enjoy all your videos. They bring back so many memories. Except we didnt butcher hogs, we had beef. Thank you
Thanks so much for sharing this.
Dad told stories about doing exactly this growing up in the 30s and 40s. They didnt have any power equipment. Used a block and tackle drawn by mules and would shoot them.on deck so they'd roll over into the scalding tub. Y'alls method seems much more humane. He said they'd squeal and scream and it was pretty disturbing.
Wow.. That was awesome. Ya'll did it just like my momma has told me it was done when she was a kid. LOVE IT
The old times are priceless ! ❤😊
Would love to experience this... please keep the traditional things alive.. and l pray more young people will follow
This is great, thank you for sharing! When it was tome for my family to process our first pig we had no one around to show us how. We turned to youtube and people like y’all to teach us! We are on our second year and hopefully passing some skills down to our kiddos!
Very interesting. Great video
You have the process down pat! Blessings.
Love the family traditions!
Excellent Sir !!
Thankyou 😊hello from Alberta .
That's the way we did it, well except the tractor part, a lot of manual labor back then . It was a good time on the farm.
When I see this I think what ever happened to us all? How far removed we have become from the fruitful ways of the past. Family neighbours & community need to be restored
amen!
Love seeing people come together and work to get a job done! Awesome video, and I LOVE home grown/made sausage. I think I could eat my weight in sausage, lol
Thank y'all for posting this video. This is the one I've been waiting to see. Y'all definitely have the process down to a fine art.
Awesome Video! Keep up the Great Work!!
great stuff, happy new year to you and yours!
I sure wish we lived closer to yall. We know someone close that has a scolding vat, but wouldn't let us use it. We offered 1 hog for use 1 hog for us. We live about 2 hours south of yall. Will be looking to the same next year. Gutted each weighted 800 pounds
Loved it
👍👍watching and learning. Ya'll ever dream that you'd be country star's right behind Olivier 😊. Love and blessings.
