I saw him play a few weeks ago in Georgia and had to drive 7 hours to see him. I went down to the merch table after the show and his manager was there. We told him how much we loved foy and his music. A little while later, Foy Vance himself was standing in front of me, an hour before he was supposed to come out. He spent an hour with us just talking and hanging out. It was the most incredible night. He is such an extraordinary talent and amazing person.
damn, some of my favorite song-based music is this super-aching, hyper-melodic, non-strophic, linear chorus-less style of writing. what a powerhouse vocal performance and a huge sounding cedar jumbo guitar! awesome!
Every now and then I come back to this video and it is so magical. I recorded the sound and operated one of the cameras, I can't tell you how amazing it was to be in that room, so greatful!
Are you serious with this!? where has he been all my life? I've listened to this at least 20 times today, freaking amazing. Such raw, natural talent. Drool.
He did a gig up in Newcastle this year in the Cluny 2 (must hold around 100 max) and I stood a foot away from him the whole night! I've followed his career since Indiscriminate Act Of Kindness, and that night was the best gig I've ever witnessed. It was like some kind of happening, a unique experience that I will always be grateful to have been part of. It's always great to hear of other folks who have become aware of him and have been touched by his honesty and genius!
I absolutely love this song. It plays in my store everyday, never heard it before. Never heard of Foy Vance. He is amazing. What a talent, what a voice. I became an instant fan.
his voice is amazing....sends chills and makes the hairs stand up, if you get the chance to see him live don't miss it. I totally agree with Megan, a truly natural talent.
Filip T he's one of those artists that you are thankful that they use their creativity in such a way that they leave you wanting more...they don't fatigue your ears ever
Same here, first saw him in a tiny venue in brighton back in 2008 and felt compelled to tell everyone about him every since. Glad you like the video, we have another one with him and also an interview on our channel. Check it out!
Heartfelt soulful brilliance!!! I was looking forward to buying three albums this year - Southestern by Jason Isbell, Stories Don't End by Dawes and Joy Of Nothing by Foy Vance. All of them are gems filled with wonderful songs, musicianship and performances, but I'm gonna stick my neck out and say that Foy has produced THE best album of 2013 with this group of songs.
I was tired of You telling me your leaving Every time it came to blows It's not enough To say it when you mean it And then pack your bags and go And It was hard to be jealous I'm supposed to be having the time of my life Now let me say I would rather had you been vaporised by a lunar reflection in the sky than to be beguiled by one so banal I just never dreamed it could come to that Well, Darling I'm not angry I'm just a little bit confused Well she just chose the jokes and the quotes of others Though her eyes know nothing true But still yet as you lie there, May she find you in her arms Has a killer soul, and a burning coal, It is both hard to hold, hard to put down That's the way I held you Though I never will again Yours faithfully friend
Hey ya'll, this video has stood as a pinnacle of performance and also audio quality for me for a long time, and I can't help coming back every now and then for more! Hoping someone can give me some insight into the recording setup here, as I've been trying to achieve a similar result. Obviously, the most important part of a good sound is the musician, and Foy is one the best, but can anyone tell me the mics used? Large diaphragm mic for the vocals there, but the guitar sound is kiiiiiller. How'd you capture that? And thanks so much for putting out some incredible content! Lots of channels are big for having artists come in and do stripped down sets, but you are guys are at the top. Cheers, Ross.
Hi Ross, thanks so much for the kind words, I love this session too! The vocal mic was a CAD e300s used in figure of 8 polar pattern (picks up from the front (Foy's mouth) and back, but completely rejects sounds at 90 degrees (his guitar)). The guitar sound was a lot straight from Foy. He had some meaty pickup in there (sorry I can't remember which, probably a large piezo as it had a lot of oomph to it) that came out as a DI, then a condenser mic inside (you can see it through the sound hole, hovering in the middle) that also came out as a DI. Those two signals were big and full so I just popped a pair of Rode NT5 mics in XY position at around the 12th fret to add some top end and capture the guitar within the room in stereo. Mixing was mostly down to an old UAD card that ran some of the LA2A compressors and a lovely simple plate reverb, was a joy to mix! Glad you like it. Dan

If I could hit these note with the rawness and the emotions...I'll probably quit the day job!

I can't imagine being in that room next to him. I bet you could literally feel the music. Incredible.
It was pretty incredible Nick, one of our favourite ever sessions and artists to have filmed. thanks for watching

Just the greatest... Fact

thanks for watching Megan, he really is an incredible artist.
The Live Sessions Do you ever record in the States? I'm releasing an album this summer, would be amazing to collaborate.
Megan Lick We're based in London, would be amazing to come over to the US though, maybe some day!
This man made me cry.

Come back to St. Louis Foy! One of the best artists to hear live :)
Love the 0:58 part. Why is it only used once throughout the song? Definitely the best bridge ever written.
Filip T he's one of those artists that you are thankful that they use their creativity in such a way that they leave you wanting more...they don't fatigue your ears ever
Because why not?
will have to second that! An amazing artist. To be in that small room filming a foot away from him was something we won't forget in a hurry!

When i open my dictionary and look up the meaning of genius, 'Foy Vance' is all it says, and thats cool with me. :)
Incredible, absolutely incredible.
I ♥️ this song 🔥💥🥊💥🔥
This guy is amazing. Such a raw talent
So beautiful, so heartfelt. Gives me chilling and my eyes tear up a lil bit everytime lol
So amazing, one day I hope to play a song with Foy!
that's a super descriptive review right there and very much deserved.

he was an extremely nice guy.
ALL IN!!
I was tired of
You telling me your leaving
Every time it came to blows
It's not enough
To say it when you mean it
And then pack your bags and go
And It was hard to be jealous
I'm supposed to be having the time of my life
Now let me say
I would rather had you been vaporised
by a lunar reflection in the sky
than to be beguiled by one so banal
I just never dreamed it could come to that
Well,
Darling I'm not angry
I'm just a little bit confused
Well she just chose the jokes and the quotes of others
Though her eyes know nothing true
But still yet as you lie there,
May she find you in her arms
Has a killer soul, and a burning coal,
It is both hard to hold, hard to put down
That's the way I held you
Though I never will again
Yours faithfully friend
retsamkcub it’s ‘I would rather had you been vaporised by a lunar reflection in the sky than to be beguiled by one so banal’
@@mattbarr3145 so it is. thank you. edited the OP
@@retsamkcub @matt barr you both missed another small one! Instead of 'Has a killer soul', it's 'As a guiltless soul'.
Foy is the best!
Brilliant performance from Foy!
Anyone know what the vocal mic is? Don't recognise it.
It's our lovely CAD e300 www.soundonsound.com/sos/1997_articles/jun97/cadequitek.html
This is what the men of northern ireland should be doin. Sheer genius.

Does any one know what tuning he is in?
+Anneliese Braun This song is in standard tuning I believe. At least that's the way I play it
+Anneliese Braun I believe it's a full step down, i.e. D, G, C, F, A, D
.... than to be beguiled by one so benile ... wow, must have been an english major
mends your soul a bit
