- Scotland's First Minister Humza Yousaf became interested in politics when he was just 16, believing it was the best way to make meaningful change. He joined the SNP whilst studying politics at the University of Glasgow and by 26, had become one of the youngest MSPs to enter Holyrood.
Humza has gone to make history as the first Muslim leader of any Western democracy, as well as Scotland's youngest leader. He joins James to discuss the state of UK politics, Scottish independence and why he believes Islamophobic conspiracy theories have become part of the mainstream discourse.

I’m white. Maybe it is. Maybe that’s the problem. Not being able to accept assimilation is why wee babies are being shot every day. Thanks to the uk govt. it used to be the Irish who were the uk target. My grandpa was bright but couldn’t get permanent work in Scotland due to being an Irish catholic. My mum and her siblings had to go to a soup kitchen when he had no work. However grandpas family did ok and his offspring turned out to be smart nice people.

I’m an American so my opinion of him really is neither here nor there in terms of importance, but I found a really heartening amount of overlap between our experiences and ideals despite our incredibly different backgrounds - mine being a white American who was a teenager during the post-9/11 years.
Of course, where Humza was giving stump speeches about the Iraq war at a similar age (I am 36) in public, I was 15 pacing back and forth in my mom’s bedroom ranting and raving about the war in Iraq and how it was disastrous and awful that we were going. I also studied politics - though I didn’t end up running for anything at any point - and I’ve always been motivated with the idea that things can and should be better than they are. I even particularly related when he talked about how worried his mom was when he ran, mine has always been worried that my activism would put a target on my back. However, she did go from being quite worried about my stance on police violence possibly getting me in trouble to sending me safety check lists for going to protests and articles about wearing shatterproof glasses in case of rubber bullets.
I don’t really have a point to this comment except to say that with the world feeling as bleak as it does, with the situation in Gaza being as horrifying as it is, it brings some small amount of comfort to know that there are Humzas out in the world that speak so directly to my values and my thoughts who can effect change in a way that I can’t.
Hi Lissa! I'm an SNP voter in Scotland who has a high regard for Humza, a man possesing sterling abilities, including genuine integrity. In the next few years when the world political situation gets more fraught ( Possible Trump administration in USA 🤢) I hope he will lead us to Independence.
He gave nearly a million pounds of taxpayers cash to Hamas to get his in-laws out. He forgets that Hamas started this war. Started with little faith in Humza changing much of what is going on around the world today and much more concerned with his view on Scotlands Independence. I think his views have restored my faith in our "Scotlands" place on the world stage and at home. I am definitely more hopeful of Scotland's involvement in settling major problems of the world and that Scotland voice is heard.

There were no Scottish NHS strikes unlike in England where strikes by nurses, consultants and junior doctors have caused over 1 million canceled appointments and procedures.
Junior doctors in England are still threatening strike action if their pay claim is not settled by the Tories at Westminster.
Scotland has the best performing NHS amongst the 4 countries in the UK.
Child poverty is less in Scotland than in England.

95% of Scottish people are registered with a dentist.
In Scotland there was free care for the elderly that has been extended to anyone who needs it.
Free prescriptions.
Free bus travel for under 22 year olds and over 60 year olds.
No tolls on bridges in Scotland.
Free dental care for under 26 year olds.
Free university Education.
Free parking at all NHS Scotland hospitals.
Free eye and dental check-ups.
Free period products.
Baby boxes.
Carers allowance supplement.
Best start grants and best start foods etc.
The Scottish government is left of centre unlike the Red and blue Tories.

As an American it is so refreshing to listen to intelligent and dignified conversation between two articulate and informed men. I enjoyed this. Mr. Yousaf, with just a cursory introduction to you, I would say Scotland is better for you. Hatred of all forms is now thriving in my country, but the truth is, multiculturalism is exactly why we’re prosperous and our culture dynamic. At least for now. Prejudice, ignorance and fear are just tools for people who have no ideas or solutions. For my friends and historic family in the UK, I hope you will resist the far-right assault on a more hopeful and inclusive future for your very sensible-and witty-people. Learn from us and refuse to go further down that cynical, pointless path. It is an unhappy one.

How could anyone be against Scottish independence ? Scotland is a country in its own right it is not a region and or countie of England and therefore should have the right of self governance instead of being treated as a colony and more often than not insulted by the English

Well, that would be true if the Acts of Union in 1706/7 were not passed in both Scottish and English Parliaments.

I’m White, Scottish of Irish & Highland descent, born in Glasgow in 1965 and I am not any more Scottish than Humza, or anyone else born in Scotland, regardless of their colour, race, religion or sexuality.
Humza and his father believe in an independent Scotland and that is why Humza will always have my vote.
Apart from the politics, Humza is an intelligent, interesting man, with great moral & family ethics, which again, regardless of race, colour creed etc, is all I need to know about someone, to like and befriend them.

Incredible that the guy who stood in Holyrood and effectively gave an anti-white hate speech about the lack of non whites in positions of authority in Scottish public life, now trots down to London and claims that he is astonished by claims that multiculturalism isn't a success. This is what a politician should be! Finally a decent human being who speaks honestly and tries in the best interest of his people. We need people like Humza in Westminster instead of the clowns we’ve got in government.

While I was born in Scotland, of mixed parentage and raised in the Caribbean, I was shocked at the racism I found waiting for me.
My different geographical upbringing, played the largest part of me becoming a massive supporter of Scottish independence.
Apathy, didn't exist where I was raised(St Kitts and Antigua) and this 108sq mile island was and still is independent.
It never made sense to me, coming from this background to be Scottish, and being dictated to by a foreign country.
The debating society at Kirkie high school, was fabulous in the 70s, and again, I can relate to Humza here.

If Humza Yousaf was competent in his remit he would have all of Scotland following him. However, the man is failing the same way he has failed in every position he has held. We do need an election so the people can choose someone they can be sure will work for Scotland not the wider world.

80% of trade between Scotland and the uk travels through cables or pipes so a hard border affects 20% of trade and even then that’s luxury’s the English like 😉

Lastly how easy was this interview and how lame was the interviewer who never once revealed anything of interest from an obvious narcasist.
