- John Swinney has said he is giving “very careful consideration” to standing to be the next leader of the SNP in the wake of Humza Yousaf’s emotional resignation.
Mr Yousaf had been facing two votes of no confidence in the Scottish Parliament as a result of his decision to terminate the powersharing deal that the SNP had with the Scottish Greens.
But before those votes could take place, he announced he would stepping down from the post he said he had been “blessed” to have.
Just 90 minutes later, Mr Swinney, who served as Scottish deputy first minister for eight years under Mr Yousaf’s predecessor Nicola Surgeon, said he was giving “active consideration” to running for the job.
Mr Swinney, who left the role of deputy first minister when Nicola Sturgeon stepped down as first minister last year, said he had been “somewhat overwhelmed” by messages from colleagues in the SNP urging him to take on the role.
Senior figures within the SNP, including long-serving MP Pete Wishart, former Westminster leader Ian Blackford, current Westminster leader Stephen Flynn, and fellow MP Alyn Smith, have all called on him to stand.

It’s because the trans issue evokes a strong reaction from media and people so it gets much much more attention than anything else they are working on. We're already more than half way there.. look around you and read new legislation and amendments to older legislation done in the last 30 years.. ramped up to 300% in the last 10.. and all vaguely worded in ways allowing the state to take our rights and freedom in an instant and on no moral, reasonable basis. This is not freedom, and we haven't had any say, input, or even knowledge of the decisions they make.. freedoms they sign away.. that is a dictatorship not a democracy.

Which was then obviously ruined when the uk people voted to leave the EU. (mainly England and wales ) not Northern Ireland or Scotland. We will hopefully get independence at some point - obviously the more local the government the better - sure you agree with that

I would respect the SNP etc desire for independence if they didn't want Scotland to join the EU. The fact they want this shows their actually not interested independence for the Scottish people at all.
The relationship of the EU and member states is so much more removed than that of Westminster. Scotland voted to remain in the EU of course an independent Scotland would want to enact the will of its people instead of having been dragged out by England.

I'm in Scotland and my aunt is waiting on a hip replacement and has been waiting for 2 years now. She is in agony. I wish I could afford to pay for her to go privately. She is now on really strong pain killers but has been told it will still be months yet before the op. that's the reality of the SNP's handling of the NHS. Millions of pounds spent on ridiculous things rather than the NHS.

What we do not want is national debt and highest personal taxation.
But Scotland has more people in public sector than elsewhere in the uk. How do you propose you pay for that? It’s almost a quarter of scotlands workforce are in the public sector. This is nothing to do with snp though, in fact the numbers were even higher under labour before the council budgets were cut by the tories. If you still want nurses and teachers then England shouldn’t pay. You need to raise taxes to pay for it yourself. Otherwise you will end up with lots of unemployed.

No more textiles, shipbuilding, steel making, banking, utilities, automotive, aerospace etc. etc. etc. Ergo, much of the UK is service oriented. Until the Scottish Parliament is dissolved for a general election then they are failing the people who voted them into The Scottish Parliament .We need new members of the Scottish Parliament soon or we may never get to where we were before the SNP came into power and we need to get did of any laws that aren't enforceable such as the hate crime law ,the law it replaced was easy to understand and still let people have free speech .
I disagree. Going back to even higher levels of public sector employment is not really a good place to be for Scotland. We already have more than England and wales as a percentage of our workforce. And that’s labours bag - massive overinflated and inefficient public sector
