Great advice! I really like how you shed light on the frivolous spending. For me, self discipline is not easy but I know it is crucial for me to reach my goals. Thanks Rudy!
Hey Rudy. I've been buying and selling yugioh for over 8 years for a living and know exactly how it feels when you tell people what you do. I started in high school as a hobby and with my interest in finance it quickly turned into a business. I would spend sometimes up to 70-80 hours a week getting multiple orders from distributors in, going to events, the whole 9 yards. When you tell someone that you invest in trading cards for a living they're quickly to judge without giving it any thought, which is sad in our day in age. Even some of my girlfriend's family members have thought that my business is a joke, which is a little degrading and always stays in your mind. However, Ive been investing in vintage yugioh for a while now and have done very well doing it! I've been a fan of your videos ever since your very first Force of Will video. I love the content, keep up the great work.
I just picked up mtg a few months ago and found your videos through a bunch of people who told me not to watch you. Enjoy your content and these types of videos, it’s oddly comforting. Keep up the good work Rudy

I love the humour and the self deprecation that Rudy always adds to his videos, but the lessons people can learn if they listen, REALLY listen to what he says is worth more then anything you can learn at school or elsewhere if you haven't had the life experiences in finance & business that he has had. Keep preachin' it Bro, you're a treasure for those who appreciate what and how you do these videos. Thanks Rudy!
I’m so glad that as players we only ever bought MTG to play. Investing was never a thought and even today looking up current prices of our high end cards is a novelty and nothing more. Magic price trends can fluctuate and still we buy and play if the whole market tanks....we still buy and play. It is nice to know however, that we have a “Whale” of a collection. We play a lot of vintage and house rules so deck construction is a blast when you can create decks with old cards, new cards and everything in between. You are spot on Rudy, us old school collectors will hang on to our collections because we love the game. Full stop. Great Video Rudy.
Watched all 43 min. God, just to peek into your head about finances. You just seem to have a hone on money and how it works that's so open. I loved watching.

I bought my 77 z28 camaro in 2003 for $3500 as my first car. I've slowly been restoring it, upgrading things, and even now with most of it in pieces around my garage, it is worth perhaps $15000 or more. All my purchases are "investments". No one appreciates their products anymore Rudy. If their computer speaker shorts out, they throw it away and buy a new one. Where as I will take it apart, re-solder the connections, and continue using it. I consider all my hobbies as investments. My Games Workshop Warhammer army, perfect example. In boxes they are all worth about the same, but assembled with a pro paintjob, magnetic interchangeable parts, LED lights... you can triple or quadruple your investment. It's all about finding value in things. Find the inherit value in products, only buy products that you know have value, and are of good quality. Learn about the products you choose to buy and appreciate them. Both my vehicles are historic, bought cheap and restored. My motorcycle I bought wrecked for cheap and I rebuilt it. Just be smart in your purchases, research the best you can, and take care of what you have.
People get mad about tough financial conversations sometimes because it's a personal thing. When you have someone who kind of knows what they're talking about (not some kid coming from old money who got into the financial field because, of course he knows money, but someone who actually started with meager means and grew it into something), they tend to take a look at your life objectively and really lay bare what you're doing right and what you're doing wrong. And, in some cases, there's a lot more in the latter category than the former. It's hard to hear that because it's an extension of "no, actually, you're wrong," and for some people it causes them to raise the shields of irrationality. It's kind of like the person who shows up to a Magic tournament with a "good deck" that they've "extensively tested" that's going to "change the meta," and they get crushed by a bunch of "net-decking talent-less cheaters" because they decided that they can run 21 lands in an 80 card main-deck monstrosity that relies on a four-card combo that's north of 5 CMC. You can clearly see why they're failing, but good luck telling them.
I needed this. Literally just drove home from work with vape and energy right next to me but counteracted my timmy habits by transferring to savings and honest to God activated my first credit card rn, it's chime, my score is shit. 🤣
"People didn't take you seriously." On the few times I mention this kinda stuff to people, most of them are like: You can't do that, you're just deluding yourself into thinking certain things can make money (intentionally, as opposed to accidentally I guess?) and also be a hobby at the same time. 1 or 2 people I know are both accepting of the idea, and encouraging of trying to do it at all.
People not into collectibles usually don't get it. There's a guy I work with that is a huge gun collector and likes comic books. he gets it. But normies never get it, because they just buy shit that instantly depreciates in value so they think everything is like that.
Rudy, have you ever thought about pulling in some investors to start an mtg fund... maybe on the side of your personal investment? Something maybe for your viewers to invest in and enjoy/get frustrated with the appreciation/ depreciation of the mtg market? Because if my financial advisors put half the effort and passion you do in mtg cards, I would be a Uber millionaire ... just a thought ... maybe max out the contribution per investor so it doesn’t stress you out... just a thought
If you sold 20 cards for 85 cents on the dollar, and lost one (gaining "0 cents on the dollar"), it would be as if you had sold twenty cards for 80.75 cents on the dollar. So, still significantly better than 55-60 cents on the dollar. Sure, I get what you're saying, but since you made up the numbers in the first place you might as well have made them up correctly. To get to "worth selling to Rudy levels", you'd have to be hosed on a 7 or so cards. I guess the bigger problem with the analogy is that, if it were true that selling the cards yourself wasn't worth it, then it sure as shit wouldn't be worth it for you to buy them for 60% and make money on the margin, lol.
RUDY!!! You think Wotc is pushing boxes of back stock....So they can roll out the Arena code cards real smooth.....the vid you did about the msrp had me thinking......💯
you and my dad have some very similar ideas on how credit and credit cards should be used. pay them off in full every month get the cash back/ rewards for no extra charge.
People don't panic-sell magic cards the same way securities get panic-sold on the equities markets as there are a lot of HFT-machines battling one another over pennies. Also there aren't stop-loss orders on magic cards that trigger huge sell-offs or short squeezes.
Hey Rudy! I love watching these sorting videos man! Question though...what do you do with all the sleeves that come with your buys? Do you sort them by type? Just toss 'em? Thank you for your work, I've learned so much!!!
Smoking and beverage industry are notorious for their marketing. A lot of people do it because the companies are really good at getting people to do it. Oh and addictions.
Using money in a completely rational manner isn't something that comes naturally to human beings, but everyone knows that being irrational with money is bad. That's why credit card companies make money on credit card debt interests. That's why people might feel like you're judging them or think they're stupid when you're simply trying to help them with financial problems. I actually think it shows healthy self acceptance to not use credit cards if you believe you're personally more likely to lose money on unthoughtfulness or irrational decisions resulting in fees and heavy interest on debts than make money on the 2% cashback and disputes. It takes a non-zero amount of energy to make a commitment to pay your credit card bill in full every month, year after year, no matter what's going on in your life at the time. The fact that you can do it makes you an outlier, Rudy; credit card companies would no longer make a profit if all their customers kept being completely rational with money and used their credit cards the way you do.

Anyways, you have said you have different locations and storage for things, but what the hell happens when a flood? Cardboard and water don't mix. I'm sure you have it all figured out and safe. But, protecting the actual investment is an entire investment alone. I don't even wanna know how much it was for the gas cans for the generator.
i love the doom and gloom of investements or collectables.. things like someone finding a box of Super Mario Land 2 on Gameboy. It does happen, it does make that thing crash in price, in 2009 people wanted like 100 bucks for Land 2, pop on ebay today 6-12 bucks. It can happened NEW old stock could be setting out there, but nothing substantial.. you are more likely to find a Case (6) of Urza's Sage than one Alpha box just found in a basement. I know that I keep kicking myself in the ass for cards I gave away when I was kid but hey that is what we did for new players... make em a deck :)

Is there a reason you don't sleeve your cards? Or do you sleeve them after this sorting step? Just seems that they're possibly getting lightly scratched just doing this much sorting and if you sort them into a larger collection, they're getting scratched again.
Ey, I know he's talked about this specifically before but I forget what he said (and I don't have the time to dig through dozens of 10+ minute videos lol) Does anyone remember if Rudy dumps low-grade ABUR or 4-horse? Ey, I know he's talked about this specifically before but I forget what he said (and I don't have the time to dig through dozens of 10+ minute videos lol) Does anyone remember if Rudy dumps low-grade ABUR or 4-horse? I know he never dumps any of his good quality stuff, that's never for sale, but I forget if he does try to flip and get rid of the damaged ABUR/4horse stuff
S1L3NTDr460n he doesn’t sell abur in any condition. He’s said this many times in his videos.
do you have people helping you sort out all of these cards?
