- Despite scoring 63 goals in 104 games, Liverpool famously decided to sell John Aldridge to Real Sociedad in September 1989.
Aldo recalls here how he came to learn of the club's decision and the hurt he felt from his beloved boyhood club.

Seeing Aldridge left at his peak is always heart-breaking. One of many bad decisions of Dalglish.
It was a really strange decision at that time.
Dalglish didn't make many mistakes at all. Once he left then the mistakes began
Daglish was in love with Rush. He was his mate. Rush was God to him. I loved Aldridge. Loved how that team with him in it played. Wasn't the same with Rush.
You’ve one side
@@terrytownsend5583 True.
Liverpool didn’t need to do that to Aldo. I was shocked to see Liverpool letting go such a great scorer and loyal player who still had so much to offer. It wasn’t like he was 35, he had many good years left, also when Souness sold Beardsley, that was a bad decision too. Glad Aldo is still passionate about Liverpool!
Yep, Beardsley, so short sighted to sell him, he was a machine.
Alot of players left due to not liking sourness management style
I always thought he and rush were brothers
@@cliveuuking4602I'd have thought the two completely different names would've been a clue. Lol.

He meant unofficially. Like ones dad was the milkman.
I remember Aldo leaving - a real head scratcher for me and my family and mates. What a player. He lit up my youth. Y.N.W.A Aldo. 🔥97🔥
Fact YNWA
Do you remember some guys crying literal tears about this? I do.
Aldo was and is a legend…
Thanks for the interview. I finally get to hear how John really feels back then.
Lived next door to John in Vulcan Street when he was a crew cutted 6 year old , so followed his career ie Woodcutters, South Liverpool ( even when he worked at Standard Triumph in Speke, ) HE was Liverpool Mad, and worked SO hard on his game !
Terrible for him when he left his dream behind . I was 10 at the time I was his neighbour and also remember his mum Betty , A lovely woman.
Well done John !!!
Aldo was at the 1978 European Cup Final.
Never knew the true story as a Liverpool fan I can’t believe the way he was treated he is and always will be a true legend ynwa Aldo 🙏
First Iv’e heard of Aldo’s leaving Liverpool circumstances & I’m a bit shocked, he was a great centre forward for us even though it was for only just over 2 years, he deserves more credit & respect for what he had done in his time at the club, he had more to offer than his future replacements - Rosental & Speedy…..
No disrespect meant but Aldo has LFC running through his veins YNWA Aldo
im not a liverpool fan, but he did walk alone he was kicked out. i heard liverpool fans singing youl never walk alone before and during the champions league final against real madrid. luis karius made afew awful mistakes on the night, yet he was left to walk alone after real madrid's 3rd goal, hes a human being who didn't pick himself, he was picked by your manager. After that match he was ABANDONED and forced away to walked alone. and was loaned off to some other clubs. what does it mean when yous sing 'you never walk alone'? is it only if you play well and win things? no-one sang to him that night that he would never walk alone. In my opinion, its just a great melody and words, its not backed by empathy. maybe i got it wrong mate, just how it seems to look to us on the outside! Peace out
So what do you expect? We keep Karius for another 5 more years?
@@BelfastManUtdTherapyhe wasn’t good enough to play in goal for the club. That is all that is. That summer, Liverpool bought what turned out to be the best goalkeeper on the planet, and after Karius’ traumatic time between the sticks for the club, there was no way he could stick around. Wouldn’t have been right for him, nevermind the club.
He actually played in a friendly at Tranmere that pre season, and was given a HUGE amount of support by the fans, while also making more awful mistakes. His head was not in the right place.
You could argue he’s still not recovered from it even now.
Karius was crap. Catch yourself on 😂😂
@@BelfastManUtdTherapySeems to look to us on the outside? Or more like to you? I think you're forgetting elite level sport is a cutthroat business. The majority of fans will always do their best to support the current squad of players, they'll have their favourites and others they think should be moved on. Some fans can be very vocal about this. Great player.
Gave 100% for every team he played for.
Remember him coming on as a sub against Mexico in USA 94? Raw passion and determination.

As a Liverpool fan that hurt to know a club legend can treat a great player like that
63 goals in 104 games. It didn’t feel like that at the time. More like 163 in 104. Man was lethal. ⚒️
50 goals in 83 league games
A lot of penalties in there .
@@edmundpower1250 Yes. But at the time it felt like Liverpool

Either way, he is a legend. John Aldridge's services while playing for Liverpool remain memorable. I still remember Aldo giving his shirt, socks and boot to the fans in the Kop Stand at the end of his game at Anfield 😢
The story he tells is that the crowd through it back again.
Remember that day so much love that man what a servant .
I wasn’t aware that he left like this. I loved Aldo because he always gave everything and what a striker he was
The most underrated striker Liverpool ever had, great player, up there with the very best.
How is he underrated??
@@monkeytennis8861 never got the recognition of Keegan, Dalglish, Rush Fowler, Owen but every bit as good. EASY
My eyes welled up at the end. I’ve followed Liverpool for over 40 years. I was devastated when they shifted Aldo. I got his autograph once when Liverpool beat Ireland 5 - 0 at Daylmount stadium in Phibsboro, Dublin.
Your eyes welled up?
How old are you ?
@@interabang I’m 50. A life long Liverpool fan - move to a Ireland when John Aldridge was signed and Liverpool had 7 Irish internationals in the squad. @@GreasyBelcher firstly you're a grown ass man. Secondly, IF you was "crying for Aldo", what did you do for the Liverpool legends that have left since? Bearing in mind there's so many which have made a bigger impact at Anfield than Aldo.
Think carefully before you respond 😉
What a player ... like he said, Liverpool born and bred ! he started at South Liverpool (I saw him there) on to Newport County then Oxford United onto Liverpool "his Club" - Real Sociedad and then my Club Tranmere Rovers, He served us Very Well !
Jimmy Armfield always thought that Rush and Beardsley did not gel well together. Some fans now think it was a mistake to bring Rush back. it unsettled a perfect team.
There wasn’t an urgent need for a striker, there was for a central defender with the loss of Mark Lawrenson, Alan Hansen would call it a day in 1991, we should have gone for Gary Pallister or Martin Keown.
Absolutely. Must say I had mixed feelings at the time when Rush returned. The team had moved on considerably in his absence and felt the club had now taken a step back. But many just assumed Rush would break all records immediately, in that team with Aldridge possibly not getting a look in. @@randyborstol2491
@DavidSmith-fs5qj we bought Glenn Hysen who was alright but aged 31 he was on his last legs as a Swedish legend
When Rush went to Italy I thought how on earth can we replace him. Aldridge made realise at a young age that nobody is irreplaceable. He was prolific, and natural goalscorer, superb. I was shocked that Liverpool let him go. Top player 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I'm not a Liverpool fan. Remember when Rush left. Aldrich basically was another version of Rush. Super annoying.
Great player John Aldridge was, loved his passion in the World Cup in 94 v Mexico, he didn’t take any crap 👍🏻👍🏻
Yes that incident in the sideline when they didn't want to let him on Legend.
That was HILARIOUS😂😂😂😂
his header ensured ireland went through. even tho we lost.
Just love the man what a legend ❤️❤️❤️
Aldo is an absolute legend. Aldridge, Fowler & Rush all amazing, none would ever sign for Manu just to get a place in their national team, red through and through. RESPECT. Aldo scored goals everywhere. I remember his wife giving a radio interview after a few weeks in Spain saying 'John scores goals, I dont know why LFC sold him?' as he hit the ground running, we all knew he would.
Only Owen dare to play for MU!😂
@@sulongenjop7436 for a Liverpool player, to play for Man Utd, is like a Welshman playing for England 😂😂
Very sad, the way they treated him. The writing was on the wall for Liverpools demise.😢
You could see the pain in Aldo's eyes as he recounts his ordeal leaving LFC! As a young LFC fan, I'd hoped to see Aldo and Rushie playing. Wasn't a big fan of Beardsley, but he still delivered. A pretty dark period for LFC, and was the start of it. Kinda like how I'd hoped to see Torres and Suarez play together too, but that didn't work out either and we ended up with Carroll!
Wasn't a big fan of Beardsley?? Weird!
Not a fan of Beardsley? Are you joking? One of the most talented English footballers ever?
@@sib1930 Don't get me wrong, there are things to like about Peter, but if you compare Aldo to Peter, he was more prolific, but KD probably saw a bit of himself in Peter and was trying to replicate the system for Rush. As for Peter, he then went on to stain his reputation a bit, so....where as Aldo is a Red all the way.
I think he looked like and was seen as a poor man's Ian Rush when he arrived and coming from Oxford didn't help. It was unfortunate and unfair but he more than proved himself with the fans.
@@guffy2339 Of course Aldo was more prolific based on the type of player he was. Beardsley was more about providing for others as a deep lying forward. Using your 'logic' Kenny Dalglish wasn't that that good a forward because of his strike rate but that totally ignores context. A lot of lesser players had better strike rates than King Kenny.
Beardsley leaving hurt me more than Aldo as a kid, because we simply did not have a player that could do what he did.
At least with Aldridge, Rush could replace his goals but nobody was replacing Peter Beardsley's skills and strengths.
One of Souness' biggest fuck ups considering Peter was still smashing it for Newcastle well into the 90s, when we could have done with him badly in that era.
Beardsley and Fowler in tandem would have been something to behold.
Shocking decision from Kenny .
The loss of Aldo Spackman and Johnson all in the space of 18 months and was not replaced. Was the Hammer blow that started to finish Liverpool off. They never replaced these players, especially John he was sold way too early..
The club froze Johnston's bank account. Uncalled for.
Along with Mark Lawrenson and Jim Elgin. Kenny should have replaced Lawrenson, it should have been a priority.
Sad for Aldo, deserved better. At least he and his family benefitted financially from the move. Still shoddy though. Although Liverpool went on to win the old First Division title that season Aldo staying might have helped them get another one. Whatever, not the way to treat one of your own.
Nice interview. Emotional, still. You can tuck bad memories away, but never get rid of them as they like to pop up as a reminder.
It was unlucky for John to be around at the same time as Rush. But at least he lived the dream and won the league title with Liverpool. And the fa cup too. And as he said he did financially well out of it all. Thanks John. You are a Liverpool legend.
STILL & ALWAYS MY FAVOURITE PLAYER....ALDO IS A LEGEND!!!
Ian rush was Kenny 's mate and 2 into three won't go , i thought Aldo was in his best form when they let him go banging them in from John Barnes crosses , Rush lost a bit of pace after injury coming back from Italy and i thought he was never the same .
That’s the problem, Rush was Liverpool’s greatest scorer ever…they could have kept Aldo these days playing 433 and needing a good squad to compete for 4 trophies, different time.
I think Rushie struggled with all strike partners. He had to be the number one strike and his numbers backed that up.
As a neutral, non liverpool fan, ian rush was the greatest goalscorer ive ever seen in from the british isles. John aldridge did well in his time at liverpool as his stats back that up, but compared to ian rush i know who i wud back to score a goal if my life depended on it.
The same Kenny wearing a mask in an empty stand and an empty stadium! Doing what he was told to secure a well deserved knighthood! The infamous Sir club!
@@colingeddes2172 Rush was the best striker in maybe Europe him and Van Basten , but it was between 1981-87 .
You will always be one of my favourites. Loved the era you played in Aldo
Loved, loved, loved John Aldridge. What a goal scorer. His goals for Liverpool speak for themselves and those for Ireland proved he could play in any system. Met him once in Boston - one of my great memories.
Good for John getting money to set his family up top striker as well
As a young Irish red, was gutted when Aldo left. It was one of the first of many strange decisions by the club at the time. Over the next couple of years many more mistakes were made and that season of '89/'90 would be the last title they won for 30 years. But Aldo will always remain a legend and much loved by the fans.
It still doesn't feel like we have won a title 19/20 was covid era and was not the same. I hope we can win it this season and have a good time celebrating it.
A lot Irish players were moved on in a short space of time.
@@Bowlardo Uefa brought in a '4 foreigners rule'. Different world to today.

This is really sad, as he was an amazing player and the pain is still there. This I why I say players don’t have to be loyal to the club, as when the clubs ready they’ll spit you out.
Why would you do that to an absolute legend. He was prepared to fight for his place. Would never have thought the club would treat anyone like that.
It didn't sit well with me then, and it still doesn't, one of the shameful things from Dalglish, as a manager, we expected more, that's who we are. Respect to you John for still being a Red !!
❤ great player
I'm an oldham fan but I love aldo I remember him at Oxford he was awesome before he left for Liverpool and that semi final goal at Hillsborough in 88 was brilliant like his cup final goal in 89 v Everton the guy is a legend and nothing but respect from me he's old school a proper striker but still loves the club... john you are a legend ❤
Lovely man John meeting him in Orlando in the world Cup in America 1994. What a fantastic man kind man. Class above ❤
Were you the guy in the yellow baseball cap?
Hahahaha “YA FUCKIN CHEAT, YA DICKHEAD!”
Not just a great player, but also an absolute rock in the aftermath of Hillsborough.
I’m a Liverpool fan. And one of the things I always loved about the club was the fact it treated people in the right way. But it was clearly a myth.
Defo one of the best to grace us with your talent ALDO. What is really nice to see is that although hurt you are not bitter and twisted about it. I see the pride and passion when you commentate on games a talk so highly of Liverpool. Always loved and remembered. Cheers mate
He was my hero when he was at Oxford - Liverpool got him for an absolute steal at 750K even then for a striker who could guarantee you 20+ goals a season. Nowadays he'd set you back £70 million, if not more.
Terrible decision, irony being we bought ronny rosenthal 6 months later because didn't have enough strikers, just keep John in the first place.
Our club and ppl connected were going through some of the most difficult times during this period and if im honest aswell the word legend gets bound around alot when talking about former players and Aldo is one certified!!!! Beardsley , Barnes , Rush, Dalglish, Toshak , keegan , etc the usual , but i fully remember this and i was gutted when he left , Rosenthal was a great player , but he was no Aldo ...

Aldo, my first Ireland game was a game against Turkey, a World Cup Qualifier. Aldo got a hattrick. Lethal finisher.
No matter how loyal a player is to the club, the players are pawns to be used and moved on. Loyalty should be a two way street. Shocking the way Aldo was treated by LFC; you can still hear it in his voice. A great player who loves LFC. Never knew of the circumstances of his leaving LFC. Can't believe he was at the club for just over two years! What a player he was.
I'm an everton fan but one of my favourite goals of all time is also"s volley against forest in the cup semi.. Barnes cross then bang.. Get in 👌👌👌👍👍
Aldo is a legend; sad to see he got hurt like that ; even if he had to go they could have done it in a better way
Aldo banged in goals galore for years after leaving. Sold way too soon, just like Beardsley, Houghton, Staunton, Hysen, Ablett and Burrows. Some very odd sales that helped Whiskey Nose get his title a lot quicker they otherwise would have done. Imagine they'd all stuck around another several seasons with the likes of Macca, Marsh, Redknapp, Don and Fowler etc coming through the ranks under their wings 😔
always liked and respected John I know now why. the real fans of the club knew it was wrong I think at that time the manager still had a lot of power John is a Liverpool boy and nothing can change that
Thanks John for all the great memories
I remember being shocked when I heard Aldo was leaving for Spain. He was so great those two years in a team of greats.
Aldo was & always will be my all time LFC hero
I wasnt happy when you came after Rushie left you did a great job I was fuming when they let you go we still love Aldo proper scouser through an through
I met John Aldridge on quite a few occasions in the past in the line of work I used to do and I can tell you all he was one of the stand outs for me in how real he was and a proper gent who had time for the majority. There was no big ego about him which was so good to see.
Then you got off the bus
Great interview.
Fair play to him for holding out for that pay off.
The reason why Aldridge was let go was because Dalglish was still upset at the way Aldridge missed his penalty against Wimbledon in the 1988 FA Cup Final, thus, costing us a historic FA Cup and League double.
Met john at shannon airport , shook his hand and just said thankyou for the memories.
I’m sure now, Dalglish would hold his hand up, and say, “selling Aldo was a big mistake” Any how. Great days with Rovers. And a great coach.
He was a great player what he did at Oxford unbelievable.
Never sell a goalscorer. What a finisher he was . Poor decision
i was only a kid then, remember him leaving. Didnt know that happened, well done digging his heels in and getting a decent deal out of it.
All football players I give you all respect

I seem to remember reading somewhere (Aldo's autobiography?) that after Hillsborough, something that affected Aldo deeply, he had had a run in with Kenny's wife Marina. If so these things can get personal.
True that mate. I seen him on an after dinner speech. It was after the Hillsborough charity game at Celtic, Aldo and his wife were having a drunken domestic and making a show of themselves. Marina went over to tell them to go to bed and Aldo told her where to go. Says himself he knew he was finished after that. Don't know why he's telling a different story here
@@edmoss7952 yeh I get that impression mate. I think that goes with a lot of the 70s and 80s players. Had the misfortune of meeting Ray Houghton one night in a pub. He was an obnoxious cunt
Aldo was an incredible striker for Liverpool.

Fantastic olayer for Liverpool... did his job better than anyone in the league .. pity how it ended as in today's football he would if finished his career at Liverpool cause not many nowadays whi could score as often as Aldo ❤

Never forgotten Aldo. One of us... unfortunately, owners are about business.. not local loyalty however well you are playing. Surprised they dealt with the situation in that way. Glad you got a good payoff... least you deserved.
When we ( Tranmere ) signed Aldo I couldn’t believe we got him. He then scored 40 goals in a season. Great years and a great player.
We'd moved on from Rush. Barnes & co providing for Aldo from the wing. Goals galore. Rush came back and but there was no down the middle world class supply anymore.
There was but he was either in jail or injured.
I'm a Forest fan and I couldnt stand Aldridge because he was so good. Strange that he was let go when he scored so many goals.
Always used to look at my programme to see who was playing for the away team. If Aldo played I used to really enjoy watching him play but knew he would score. 😊
Good old Aldo although one of the enemy at the time that team they had with Barnes Beardsley putting crosses in he was a great striker
Top Man Aldo. YNWA
Remember Aldridge at Oxford Utd when they were on their remarkable journey to the top. Good player
John shouldn't beat himself up over Kenny's decision to sell him because history tells us he was a below average manager only scraping a single league title by the skin of his teeth he was great player Kenny but a shocking inadequate manager who had abundance treasure at his finger tips and wasted the opportunity afford him he is to blame for Liverpool downfall in the rankings. Some people would say he was piss poor and I would agree with this perspective
The team with Barnes, Beardsley and Aldo played some of the best football by a team in memory.
Was that possible with a poor manager. Also Hillsborough took a large toll mentally on the players and especially Kenny.
Are you dismissing his 3 league titles and first club double because they were before the Premier League era..?
Fair play to John, totally honest in every way.
He’s was a boss player Aldridge so was the whole team to be honest but at least he got the chance to play for Liverpool fc…some people can only dream of that …YNWA

When you consider the players Ireland had at their disposal from 1988 - 1994 is mind boggling. The national team absolutely under achieved in this era. Extraordinary talent when you look back.
Well done John, Top Man.
Brilliant story and what a brilliant player ,I'm a Forest fan and he was nightmare for us at the time ,to be honest their whole front line was incredible .But good on him for opening his mouth about the money with the owners . If he'd of kept quiet he of got nowt .
....and he also ruffled Brian Laws hair when they scored in the FA Cup Semi Final!!!
Yep that was a shite thing to do to a fellow professional .
I worked at a hotel near Chester. Ian Rush had a meal there before returning to Liverpool. I have no idea who the man he was dining with, buy I eavesdropped on parts of their conversation - I heard enough to confirm he was returning to Liverpool. I remember Ian had Guinea Fowl.
Brilliant player
Could do with Aldo now , we are sadly lacking up front and we also need a goal scorer in midfield
He stepped up when Rush left, to be trashed on his return. Now Ian Rush is my sporting hero for Liverpool and Cymru, but there surely was squad needs to keep John. So many super subs have impacted games from this time to now.
Thank you for your time at Oxford.
I remember it well. John was a top notch striker, top bloke. Liverpool's dominance ended when they appointed Dalglish as manager (and subsequently that other managerial kid, Souness). Bob Paisley advised Dalglish for the first couple of years. But when Kenny was left on his own, his poor managerial skills were left exposed. Forcing Aldridge out on Liverpool was a crime against humanity. Pure and utter madness.
Bang on! The biggest reason we went 30 years without winning a title was the utter mess Dalglish left, which Souness couldn't clear up. Signings went from Barnes, Beardsley and Aldridge, to Jimmy Carter and David Speedie!🙄. His treatment of Peter Beardsley at the end was little better!
@@johnwignall5413 absolutely. I was just talking to a mate here the other day, about the awful way Dalglish treated Beardsley. Dalglish was an exceptionally poor manager. To take the top resources he had at Anfield. and throw it all away, and so quickly, took some doing.
In those days it wasnt a squad game, and put simply, Rush was Rush. Would have loved to have seen Aldo stay, what a striker and Liverpool through and through ❤ . I think the only striker better than Rush at the time was Van Basten (to put it into perspective).
the rush that comeback wasn't the rush that left in 87
