- Rhythm ventured to Bristol to meet drum tech Joe 'JD' Dorosz who gave us a guided tour of Tico Torres' latest Bon Jovi kit.
Check out what he has to say about everything from the custom finish and specially coated Paiste cymbals, to the Oxygen mask Tico uses between songs during a long set.
finaly somebody recognize his amazing work since the beggining to the end!! love Tico!!!!
Tico the Hitman! One of the best drummers in the world. I've always known that he gives his all from beginning to end, some concerts lasting over 3 hours, but I never imagined he needed an oxygen mask! oh well, what can you say? A true legend!
you surely don't know your drummers if you consider tico torres one of the best in the world, not to rip on the guy, probably a great drummer but not even close to top 10 by a long shot.
Rating musicians of any kind is stupid. Especially drummers. There is no competition. No winners or losers. @@Jeaust8V
Luv the Drum set, Color and graphics are So.... Cool!
Hello, how are you doing today? Nice meeting you here.
He's a legend in his own right, just cause he's not as well known as Ringo doesn't mean he's not deserving, T defines underrated... every drummer at that level is a legend!
Yeah but the kind of music they play is very simple and yet the guy needs oxygen??
@@apieceofdirt4681simple? 😂
Thats a cool video.. Sweet kit.
No in studio, but live in a few songs Tico plays double base a clear example is Keep the Faith, in the 80's he used still more
PP does the paint awesome!
Whoa whoa SLOW DOWN that beginning part! We want to know what all of those roadie notes say on the papers at the beginning
A Rock drummer with 2 bass drums looks the part. Ronnie Tutt behind Elvis is a great example. I believe he was the first American Rock drummer to use two bass drums.
But he doesn't use them... its purely cosmetic... its aggravating when these people have this idea that more drums=bigger stage presence. I have a bigger than average kit but I use the shit on it... I guarantee you he could do the gig with one rack Tom, one floor tom, one kick, 2 crashes, hi hats and a ride... i mean Bonzo has the stage presence of a God and he used 5 drums and 4 cymbals...
he usually use the double on the ending o a song such as "keep the faith" and sometimes on "lay your hands on me" check it out yourself "2001 live giants stadium"
Listen to keep the faith live!
Not once in that song does he use his second kick drum.
Tico para mim está entre os 5 bateras melhor do mundo
Ne preteruj!
Ummm... can someone link me a damn song where he uses that second kick drum out of necessity, where John Bonhan or Nick McBrain couldn't play it using one kick pedal...
He's not Buddy Rich and no one is (well i aint) saying that, but he is 1 hell of a ROCK drummer..
Teach me to be your replacement I love your work
wow cool video
they can be used for doublets during rolls or a drumsolo in that concert or maybe just one of those in-between songs drum licks, it can even be just advertising .. double pedals are not necessarily used in songs :P
Ive got a lovely sounding Masters Custom kit that would change your mind...
Are those black bar chimes custom made because I can not find any for sale?
No entiendo nada pero esta buenísimo la batería
At the end of Keep the Faith he uses the double bass, more oldies and fills he uses em for
Watch Tico solo....
He's an awesome player!!!
Where's his Signature Free Floating snare drum?
Does Tico still have a house in Admirals cove. Saw him driving his Golf cart a few times
stephen zisky No. He sold that and lives inside Jon’s ass.
Lay your hands on me, the intro tico uses double bass. not only metal drummers use double bass drums.
I think Lay Your Hands On Me in the interlude/chorus after the post-solo verse. TWICE :))
What size does Tito use on his Ahead sticks????
Live from london 95 blaze of glory
So why's he not playing his signature snare?
Why does he have double bass for bon jovi songs
LOL THE LAST ONE AT A CONCERT
few fills there's a fill on Fear from the keep the faith where he does what it sounds like a heel toe thing. on Damned from These days album he does a crazy feel going into the last chorus coming out of the solo. so far that's what I've heard...right of the top of my head....can't really remember another double bass fills. he's not a double bass balls to the wall i think, he uses it here and there....great drummer though....
Cool set for a good drummer.
But can anybody tell me one singular Bon Jovi Song in which double base is played?!?
I can't because there isnt one. He used it during the 80's when everyone did and never got the memo of double pedals or the fact that he never used it in the studio. It's all for effect and stage presence. People who say he uses it live are insane. What they are talking about is the easiest thing to do with 2 kick drums and is possible with one. I know that because I can do it. He is just lazy.
he only uses them for fills
"Roulette" "Homebound train"
I don't think I've ever heard double bass playing anywhere on a BonJovi recording or live. I've never heard it in a fill or a groove. I don't understand why you'd want two bass drums when you play one.
Live is a whole different situation. Have you seen Tico playing live? He went crazy with the 2 kicks during the live show!
Alex Van Hagar OK. I haven't seen him live recently..
Joe Nocella They are out there, just very discreet. Mainly small embellishments here or there and he does go harder live, but still he's not pulling out any Death Metal or anything
Timothy Hager I would also recommend finding the video of Tico playing at a sound check
+jjBdrumming I agree..He's obviously hung up on the look of a double bass kit but he's never used two bass drums.
No double BASE is played anywhere. But there are few songs with double BASS.
Im assuming the 2nd Bass Drum is just for Stage Presence ? he definitely doesn't play it
No shit it is for a stage presence
He doesn't use his signature snare?
Because thats what it's called when you use only the LP letters. LP Percussion or you can use Latin Percussion.
musiqmanie it’s not LP Percussion, that’s saying Latin Percussion Percussion.
Pensei que Tico ia aparecer
What kind of oxygen mask is that?
i didnt get the serie of the cymbals? wtf
Miguel Lopez Paiste Signature
Wait, he doesn't use the Pearl Tico Torres Signature snare?? WTF
Ático Records playing your own signature snare is like wearing your own bands t shirt.
Shows you the kit, doesn't let you hear it :D
i think he uses it for big endings and maybe fis
Hello, how are you doing today? Nice meeting you here.
Double bass in Bon Jovi? LOL
Jeremy Cubs since 1985
since 1985 they have it
he only uses them for fills
Keep the Faith live he did that
There isnt.. Just triplets and a little dbl bass in the intro for Lay ur hands on me.. All for looks.. And great looking set it is!! And live he'll dbl bass out some endings like the end of Keep the Faith (live)..
He doesn't use it on Lay your hands on me by any means necessary.
What I would like to know I find it odd that Tico uses a "hit" of oxygen while Tico plays. I understand the use of oxygen but why?? does Tico have a breathing issue of some sort?? Have never heard of a drummer doing this....
timothy sears If he gets that winded playing Bon Jovi songs, he either way over plays or needs a doctor.
timothy sears Lars Ulrich has done it back in the 80s.
I've heard that he smokes like crazy. that plus age will kill endurance. his drumming isn't that strenous,,,I've seen middle schoolers working way harder without hitting O2
Double bass is just for looks.
No shit
no, keep the faith use double pedal in the last.

Not enough cowbell
Benny. Greb.
5As i think or 2B
elway0798 5B ahead signature series stick
Its not that uncommon for a drummer that mainly uses a single bass pedal (on the recorded version) to use a double bass pedal when playing live. Mitch mitchell did it, I've seen video of Lynyrd Skynyrds drummer (the concert was in the 70s might of been Bob Burns they changed drummers alot) use a double bass live, Eric Kretz from STP was quoted in a drum magazine and he basically said keep it simple as hell when recording, then live he'd always throw in double bass fills. breaks up the monotony.
But double pedals are so good now, what's the point of the double kick drum thing. I cant tell a difference between using 2 bass drums and a double pedals. It's all psychosomatic these guys who day they can feel a difference, it really is. Plus, I get the want to put on a show and all, I do, but from what I've heard, he doesn't need the second kick drum, I know that for a fact it's possible to use a single pedal and do it.
DW now
Synd bara att Tico över gav Pearl. Men han väljer ju vad han vill nu spelar han på DW
you know your not rock n roll when you have played on "the x factor"
he stays with dw 9000s because other pedals are too smooth? thats tha main reason most drummers dont like 9000s theyre waaay too smooth
I hate 9000s, they're too hard to do triplets on, at least for my foot...
what do you expect he's 59.
free reign to tune as he wishes????
Not on my kit. I actually care what mine sound like
Robert Smith Word! I want my snare to sound like Stewart Copeland's, my toms to sound like Gerald Heyward's, and my cymbals to be set up such that my effect cymbals are to my right and my light crashes and splashes to my left.
good for fucking you, what do you want a freakin medal
Stefan Turton So if his pro decided to crank everything as tight as possible, by you words, Tico should be cool with that.
Stefan Turton It sounds like Tico is a bit of an idiot and doesn’t know much about drums, tuning, or anything. He gives dude carte blanche for tuning (odd), only likes DW9000 pedals because other pedals are too smooth (wtf), and he needs oxygen hits to play Bon Jovi songs (unless he’s sick, that’s hilarious). Sounds like he cares way more about the look of his kit than anything else. I thought he was a clown when I was a kid and they became big in 87’. 31 years later I realize, I wasn’t wrong. 🤡
Stefan Turton Big difference between working with a tech and giving said tech carte blanche. I’ve read your other comments on this video. It sounds like you want to service Tico. 🤮
it's just for the look, like guitar players with 5164 amps. who needs that many amps?
Whoa whoa whoa whoa...PAYSTE??? Really??
No, Paiste
**QUESTION FOR TICO** Actually Jon Bon Jovi **SERIOUSLY** I have a Brother in-law (Kurt 62) who claims to be Jon's Cousin (Mothers were Sisters) and as children to teens hung out together and shit until Jon started a Band and claims he hasn't seen him since!! I have my Doubts, but you never Know.
Oxygen??????? Really? Is the kind of drumming Tico does really that demanding that he cant breathe?
Its a joke?
Max Weinberg is in his 60's and Bruce Springsteen plays a longer show with a ton of songs strung together and I never see him sucking oxygen. This guy is way to hung up on being a rock star. Maybe hit the gym in your down time Tico.
Tico Torres playing keep the faith @ bon jovi paris bercy 2010
Pretty sure Tico smokes. Last two tours I saw I was probably 20 feet from the stage and pretty sure I saw him taking a drag once in a while. So, hard habit to break... offsetting it with oxygen?
Best way to get yourself straight from a hangover...Pure oxygen.
people
Nothing about the shells, i.e. what type of wood, thickness, number of plys, or the shell sizes. But lots of talk about the cosmetics. Rhythm Magazine sucks.
Do not tip Bon Jovi. 🤣🤣
Great. A drum tech who can't pronounce "Paiste" right....what has the world come too?
As if his mispronunciation has anything to do with his ability to do his job and support Tico well.
Dw drums are low and dead sounding, Sonor Tama Pearl make better drums. my opinion.
...until those made with Purpleheart Wood, more dense than maplewood, harder wood, lots of more resonance, have you heard them?
Also Ludwig and Yamaha.
I hate DW as a company... their pedal are shit dont know why people use them so damn often, their hardware In general isnt anything to write home about and their bars are still round on their racks, meaning now matter if you weld the mounts on the rack they'll eventually move due to gravity and force.... and on their drums, snares are filled to the brim with overtones, kick drums sound like free triggers off the app store and toms unless tuned right sound like cardboard fucking boxes... Pearl is my brand of choice and forever will be my drums of choice... Ludwig, Sonor, Pearl, Yamaha, Tama, some of these custom companies make better drums than dw could ever hope to...
This dude is as remedial as it gets when it comes to playing drums. Just give him a 3 piece and call it a day.
PY-stee not PA-stee!
dont want to hear this guy i wanna listen to tico!!!
Hello, how are you doing today? Nice meeting you here.
JD not the happiest of chappie. you lookd depressed working for denie carmassy. years before!!.
he is marginal at best...
Are you kidding me?? The fucker needs random hits of oxygen?? If it was Neil Peart I could understand but Tico Torres?? C’mon.
Dude calls himself a drum tech and doesn't even know that Paiste is pronounced "pie-stee" not "pay-stee"
so true haha, what a jackass
If your going to correct people for saying it that way, you gonna need to correct A LOT more.. cymbal genius..
elway0798 my last name is Pai, pronounced pie, i've had to correct countless people through my life, you're right about that, i appreciate people getting it right, regardless, Paiste cymbals are the best
rollergoalie16 pangis
+rollergoalie16 I used to just call it paste
lame show off
C'mon, no one listens to bon jovi lol
What a boring drum tech. This video could’ve been much more interesting
Hello, how are you doing today? Nice meeting you here.
Tico Torres is terrible drummer , he just had lucky to met BJ .... not creative , not great groove (considering that is the 90% Of his “contribution” for the band) , a lot of mistakes on live shows , uses a drum which is too much him ..... just a lucky guy
daniel madariaga valdes yeah and many people were inspired by his drumming so, you suck.
@@ronieldcdomingo5460 I cant imagine why... also can you point out any songs where he uses that second kick drum please...
Jack Wilczynski Keep The Faith.
@@ronieldcdomingo5460 just listened to it... not a hint of double bass in there, single kick and quite repative I might add
Jack Wilczynski oh ok. I forgot to tell you about the live version, if you didn't listen to the live version.
I don't think Tico Torres is that good of a player and he (and the rest of the band) take themselves WAY too seriously. This so-called drum tech should go back to being a bartender or working at "Minute Lube", or wherever he came from.
