  • On May 25, 2011, Rhythm ventured to London to interview The Professor, Rush's Neil Peart, for a forthcoming issue of the magazine.
In addition to the interview we also headed to the stage of the O2 Arena for an exclusive tour of Neil's phenomenal Time Machine kit with his long-time tech Lorne Wheaton. Join us on stage for a AAA look at one of the greatest drum set-ups on the planet!
Our thanks to Lorne for the tour and to Chris from Sabian for helping us set this up.

Sarah, the human brain, in all its incredible functions of life & conscious thought, operates on constant electrical impulses. Electricity is energy. Energy can not be destroyed. Energy exists forever because it has no boundaries of time nor constrictive parameters of such. Therefore, the energy which fueled the electricity for the brain and life does not cease at the moment of death ~~~
it exists still, and always and truly evermore will, as the energy of The Universe of all time that has ever existed or will ever exist and can not be measured because measurement can not constrain infinity ~~~

I have always felt strongly that Neil Peart had Asperger's.
His very Introverted/Highly Sensitive nature and his love of space, time and math fits perfectly with being an Aspie. His need for solitude and deep inner thoughts fits well with Asperger's.

Lest we forget Bonham's bionic right foot...and we mustn't forget extreme talent and skill in all other limbs, i could add soooo much praise, talk about his play on "Moby Dick", and on and on....but one word(name) quiets most rational argument...BONZO.
Evan, of the Sin City Disciples(forget his last name, if anyone knows) played with such precision and power, yet he looks effortless, almost as if it were pure leisure. Since they disbanded, he has done the clinic stuff, and still does from time to time, but he has project bands that he just does things with, when opportunity knocks
Keith Moon, (though looking as if he was falling thru his drum kit), was one of, if not the most melodic, creative drummers ever. Its is hard to imagine what in the world is he doing this, and how exactly did he learn to play...and that's just from listening. Then, you see him play, and its even more baffling
Stewart Copeland plays like he is trying to destroy the kit and his health, they keep 2 extra of every stick drum in the kit because he blasts thru dome drum heads in performance....plays with such intensity, but can blend styles, and seamlessly go from a Reggae beat to Punk, Jazz, you name it....i would love to see him in a band where he has more autonomy, less history and hysteria also would be a good thing for him....i'd love to see him host a clinic nearby.
Unknown to far, far too many, J.R. Robinson is the greatest session drummer ever. His drums are on some of the biggest hits, and great LPs in our lifetimes. Most importantly, Robinson laid the disco-rock-funk-pop concrete of Michael Jackson's tectonic-shifting Off the Wall. He played for the likes of Chaka Khan, Steve Winwood, all the way to some work with Daft Punk......There are so many, living and not, that i know Mr. Peart would not place himself above, but as for myself, he stands equal with any list that is an Honest Top 20 or an even lower number....Top 10, i'd say is fair, considering the history.

Your watching it up close right now. That's the whole point, its used for press and photo shoots. This drum set was obviously in a few magazine covers. They will print out centerfolds, posters, and internet media.
I still remember Peart's custom DW kit on the cover of Drum! magazine from almost 10yrs ago. Its was black w/ gold hardware and pentagrams and diagrams on it. I bought that magazine as a kid just to read about them. These over the top drum kits generate effective advertising.

Every detail, from the etchings on the cymbals and "gauges" on the cymbal tilters go along with the time-machine theme. Awesome.

Wouldn't it be cool if they had a replica of that set that drummers could give a go? It'd be fun to feel what it's like behind the mans famous kit. Hell, how about kits plural: the Neal Peart Experience. I'm happy to say that I got to see the man live and in person in the early 80's, and what a show it was. I will always remember that show, always.

Is there any questions to who the greatest drummer of all time's is? I've been following this man's career since 1974 when I wad 13. There will never be another master at thier craft the way the PROFESSOR the GOATIEST of all GOAT'S will ever be. May you rest in peace Mr. Peart the legendary.

Anybody know what the little pad just north of the snare drum is for? 3:22 I've never seen any video of him using it. An electronic FX snare perhaps??

I think it's trigger pad...you can see him hit a gong sound...the very last note if you watch his live from Frankfurt drum solo.
