  • This whole job is out of kilter due to the crack being previously fixed and remaining solid. I explain in this video the steps taken in the order they normally should be as apposed to the way I'm doing it here. Nevertheless the crack is now secure and sealed and will never be a problem again. Thanks for watching!

    Should you not have taken those little blocks out before gluing the back?
    Then re block it inside under sideways strap tension?

    Hey Randy, I recently bought an Epiphone Recording B which I believe is a 1928 vintage. She has a crack the length of the spruce top. The previous owner started to restore the instrument and refinished the guitar. I found your video on crack repair very informative. My question is, you state that humidifing the guitar will return it to original shape, is that true for top braces as well? I have a couple of ends on one and one end on another that have pulled away from the top a small amount. I know l need to reglue the ends but will humidifing help ? I have checked the humidity inside the guitar and it was around 40%.

    • @RandySchartiger
      @RandySchartiger  7 років тому +2

      Yes it will help the braces too, but keep in mind it's possible what you are seeing (the braces pulled away from the top) are the braces relaxed and in their normal position without a load or force being applied to them. Many guitar builders shape the braces in a way it has to be forced and clamped in until the glue dries, if the glue ever does come loose the braces return to their normal position or relaxed because what they were designed to hold has broken away. I hope that makes sense. I feel like I'm not explaining it very well.

    • @jeffkellogg76
      @jeffkellogg76 7 років тому

      Randy Schartiger Thanks for the quick reply, and you are making perfect sense. I have purchased a scissor jack from StewMac for pushing the brace into place. I am going to buy some bar clamps to stabilize the body and prevent the pressure of the jack holding the braces up while the glue dries doesn't push the guitar apart at the seams. I recently opened a repair shop and named it "GONZO'S GUITAR GARAGE ", using Jeff Beck's GUITAR SHOP album cover as inspiration for the name. I have since found out about your UA-cam channel as well as one from Argentina. I hope you are not offended by my use of GUITAR GARAGE in my shops name. Thanks again for your assistance as well as a informative and interesting channel.

      Not offended at all! :) After I started using that name I found another guy on UA-cam using it, he's been cool about it so the least I can do is be cool about it too. I've in fact been thinking about changing to something else for a title. Good to hear you have the repair under way. Good luck and happy repairs! :)

    I think it is time for a quick tip on those special tools you use. I went into the MacStewMart and they had a special sale on them. It was a Black Thursday sale. From the regular low price of $28.99 a piece they had two for $51.99 and free shipping. I couldn't resist, I got me one for acoustics and one special for classics. Although the classic one was so small it would fall through the crack. But the acoustic one was OK.
    You never know when they may discontinue those special tools (rubber glue squeegee thinghy) and I can't think of anything else that would get the job done,
    OK, back to playing psychedelic music, enough of guitar fixing science.

      I almost forgot, the Black Thursday sale is only for black tools, I can't wait for the purple Tuesday Sale next week!

      You must be reading my mind I'm planning on doing a video pretty soon about tools and several that can easily be made at home for very low cost, yet very accurate tools. Thanks for the tip, I'll definitely check it out right now. If you can get anything low from StewJack we better get on it quick.

    Hey Randy, what is the finish on the back of this guitar? Is it some type of Poly? I have a Yamaha 12-string that is wonderful but I have dragged it from one part of this earth to another and back. Italy, Japan, England and all over the US too. It has finally gotten more scratches and scrapes over its 40 year life and I want to refinish it. It looks like what you have there. The only thing I know for certain is that it isn't a nitro finish. Thank you Sir...

    • @RandySchartiger
      @RandySchartiger  7 років тому

      This guitar is finished with nitrocellulose lacquer, it's badly chipped and shattered all over the back, possibly contributing to it's good sound. I'm not sure what Yamaha uses I think depending on the guitar they used several different finishes, some of them were lacquer.

    Hi Randy, nice work as always. I live in a very humid area; would i still have to humidify?

    • @RandySchartiger
      @RandySchartiger  6 років тому +2

      probably not, get you a hygrometer and see what the humidity level is, 45-55% you won't have any trouble.

    Could you tape over the string holes and use a shop vac hose sealed with a spong in the sound hole to pull a negative pressure inside the guitar body while squeezing the glue and let the air pressure pull the glue into crack?

    • @RandySchartiger
      @RandySchartiger  7 років тому

      That seems like a good idea and probably would work for getting the glue into the crack, it still would need a ban clamp around the body once glue was in place to pull the crack together as tightly as possible but yes I think that would work.

    I bought a new Blueridge BR160. the top behind the bridge does not feel flat, I can feel the bracing through the top. feels a little wavy. is this something I should return the guitar for? any help is appreciated. Great videos!

    • @RandySchartiger
      @RandySchartiger  7 років тому +1

      I thought I remembered answering this question before but can't find it if I did lol Blueridge sands their tops really thin, that's one of the reasons they sound so good. I've seen guitars like you're describing and there shouldn't be a problem as long as all the braces are holding. You can tap around on the top with the tip of your finger and if braces are loose you usually can hear them rattle as you tap. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

    Can one put wood dust w/ glue to hide the crack ??O_O???

    • @RandySchartiger
      @RandySchartiger  7 років тому

      They are very hard to make completely invisible unless the entire back is stripped and re-finished, instruments with a lot of color (black, red) are easier than bare wood grain to hide a crack if it's a small one.
