She sounds like she's speaking British English with an Indian accent...
+Raider 2099 Ya because that's aaaalllll what Indians do!
Actually, we Indians are not at all English speaking community, as we were colonized by British that's why we developed their pronunciation. Actually in true sense we are not all related to English language at all.
She looks like a German rather than an Indian
We indians study and speak British english only here in india 👍
I understood where are you speaking from, you are from Bangladesh..Ami bujhechi..yeah i won the quiz
Hang on a minute. Minoo has very foreign British accent. Noone sounds like that on the street here in England!
It sounds like Minoo is speaking in Indian accent.
Mimoo's pronunciation is not what I would recognise as an Native English. I have looked at her channel and her voice is clearly not a native English speaker. She has a recognisable foreign accent.
It would be better to use a native speaker.
@@rattytattyratnett It's excellent British RP English - but the accent isn't quite there. I'm a native speaker (RP with substrates of West Country and Estuary English) and my pronunciation of "No" is actually closer to Rachel's.

Not being funny but they've got an Indian woman to represent the British accent, that's going to confuse a lot of people, she doesn't even sound British
I wouldn't know I'm an american
Josh Jensen Being a linguist doesn't mean that you HAVE to speak the dialect to study it.
Mr Anonymous First of all, let me just ask you one question. Are you a native British? I have studied in UK for quite a while and I can guarantee that the examples pronounced by the lady in the video sound at least 95% (if not 100%) native British accent to my ears. I agree that most of her speaking does not sound like a native British's but I have nothing against her accuracy of pronouncing the examples. Maybe she just doesn't want to speak the Brit accent for her own personal reasons and I think it is something we should respect about others. Next time please just consider your thought thoroughly before voicing your opinion.
Mr Anonymous - Then instead of cursing others upload video of you teaching British English.
+Mr Anonymous She can't speak English like a proper English person? How would you know that? Have you ever had a conversation with her? You could at least show some respect to someone who's been living in the UK for over 30 years, teaching the language. For the record, she sounds exactly like the English Phonetics and Phonology books by British authors I have here. And I haven't seen anywhere she's trying to interpret upper class here, just one of the many varieties of British English, which is not the only English in the world.

Yara's Violin that's why my phonetics professors were sometimes mad at me - my pronunciation began to settle while I was in high school, when I mostly watched British TV shows and picked up some traits and spoke pretty much exclusively to a girl who spent 10 months in Iowa, and that gave me a lot of American traits. Funny thing, now when I ask native speakers, they can't say where I'm from... and I'm Russian :D

minoo isn't a good representation of a British accent.
she has another accent besides the British one. she sound Indian
For example, she pronounces the word WORST as WAAST instead of WEST.
Dayron Why would the stereotypical british accent pronounce the word WORST as WEST? WORST is pronounced WURST. WEST is pronounced WEST.
sakura_rain You don't get my point. She pronounced WORST as WAAAAST instead of WEEEEEEST which is how Britons pronounce this word. Of course, an American would say WURST.
Dayron British people do say WURST.
I am british, we all say WURST

I'm a British English teacher and have been teaching English for many years. I am also a great advocate of American English and genuinely believe it is easier to learn for non native speakers; for pronunciation, areas of grammar and vocabulary. Over the years I have often used jazz chants (Carolyn Graham) and these are so much more effective with American English pronunciation However, I simply have to point out that Minoo is not a native English speaker. I am sure she is a fantastic teacher of English but feel it is important that people are at least aware of this (having read some of the negative comments). Moreover, there are many wonderful teachers who are not native teachers of the language they are teaching.
I'm Dutch and in my past I was taught British English by a fantastic teacher in terms of the way he did. I always tend to pronounce words as it is done in American English because the majority of influences from outside education is in American English, but my teacher was quite strict in how words should be pronounced. He may have been a non-native British English speaker, but usually I could hear whether someone was a native speaker or not, which was not the case with him. In 1997 I was in London as member of a group of students on a cultural school trip and he was one of the teachers who went along with us. During travels by metro, when he spoke English, people around us asked him where in England he came from. They clearly thought he was a native speaker and were very surprised that he was not. His method of explaining the pronunciation of the different vowels (in particular the ones with the longer sounds) was 'splitting' the sound of the whole letter into the individual 'flat' fragments of that sound and pronouncing them separately. This makes it clear why most Dutch people would tend to speak in a more American kind of way, because it is harder to do it right in British English. And I can say that my teacher's O's had a lot more of layers in their sound and they sounded more similar to Rachel's O's, but his had even more 'depth'.
She definitely doesn't sound native, but tbh she sounds quite RP

I think American more easy than British. Thanks for your videos :D
You're welcome!
American is just lazy, sloppy British English...
actually the US pronunciation is closer to Shakespeare's English. The "poshy" British pronunciation as we know it today, evolved during the 18-19. centuries.
Brittish always falls your tongue and mouth easier. But you never quite say words like they are spelled. Brittish is the superior language in my opinion since you basically could say everything faster with less chance of failing a pronunciation even if you go fast.
AWESOME ! I can hear perfectly the difference between British and American English to be totally honest both are precious. I do love both of them.
Glad to hear that @ingridmarianarodriguez8539!
@@rachelsenglish Hi ! How are you ? Well , I've been able to develop American English and I'm really proud of myself. And when someone criticize the way I speak English cause I sound like an American native speaker and they add you should study or practice British English , mmmmm I always reply " English is a super beautiful language it doesn't matter if it's British or America" , and there are a huge number of places around the world and the phonetics changes all the time.. Our language means our identity. My mother tongue is Spanish but I've adopted English like my second language. Anyway here in Argentina where I live, Spanish sounds different in the north or in the south.
To finish I adore you Rachel. You always make my day. Please keep the good job up.
Minoo sounds way too posh and formal... doesn’t sound like how we actually speak. Her words sound too shortened e.g. the way she says worst and girl sound weird af.
Normally, when we pronounce words, if a word ends with an ‘L’ sound or ‘t’ sound we don’t pronounce it. Or if a word has an ‘r’ sound in between, we don’t pronounce as well.
She really didn't say first/worst/girl right it's bugging me lol seems like they are cutting the footage before she even says the word fully or she's just shortening the sounds.

we dont actually pronounce the r and l in "girl" but its not pronounced as "gi"... its hard to write it the way how we pronounce it.

When will people learn that the "British accent" doesn't exist. 3 nations don't have 1 accent.
even the Indonesian in the comments below gets it correct in saying English uk not British accent so why cant Americans (citizens of the usa for the picky people) or even some British.
hoshikou don't frustrate yourself ;)
yeah, she speaks a little bit different than other british people. there is really something about her accent.
hoshikou
When people say British, they are talking only about England. I think people say it like that cause it's mostly only the English that call themselves British. I've never heard a scotsman say he's British. The English use the word British a lot more than the others from Britain.
shinmusashi44 but still biritsh accent doesnt exist. i know they mean english but they should say that, cus if you said british accent to a scotsman he would knock you out. its mostly americans iv heard say british accent when they are referring to the london one.

You could have found a better British accent than that! Minoo has an odd pronunciation, something foreign to it. But perhaps it is because she is trying to over enunciate the words for the purpose of the video. For example, when Minoo says "First" it sounds like "Fast". I am British with a neutral accent and I can assure you that both "First" and "Fast" sound different in British English. I don't recommend this video... it could be confusing.
oh man your last words make feel confused jajaja
;-)
yeah your right men....now its a little bit confusing now....hard to tell the differences anymore :)
A neutral accent? What does that sound like in a British accent?
We have a wide range of accents in the UK railway going from Northern, Geordie, Scouse Southern and Brummie. A neutral accent will be the kind of accent you hear on TV.
Ohhh, now I can hear the differents!😄 (I'm french) Thank you so much for this video!

Forgive me, but to my ears, Minoo does not sound like she's a native English speaker. She obviously has a more British accent than American, but there is something else playing in there....some other foreign accent over the English.
I'm from the UK, and it sounds like it has some Middle Eastern influence to me too.
+Emre that's an interesting point. So, which part of England would you say she was from (where most of the residents speak with the same accent, and do not have a foreign language as their first)? In America, we can usually tell if a person is from the southern or the northern states, for example. Then, even more precisely from particular areas, such as New York, New Jersey, or Boston. However, many people in New York learn a different language before English....they may be American born, but have learned to speak Spanish, Chinese, etc. first, and it clearly comes across as an accent for us. I'm not saying that Minoo isn't British, just that it doesn't sound like she learned to speak English first. :)
I am not native English speaker but minoo sounds iranian..

William Trotter Well said :)
lmaooo yeah she was terrible at the end!!
2:01 The difference of vowel sound coming in the words like - Hot, Honest, Mom, Doctor, Colleague etc. starts from here...Someone here from India please note that particularly if there is a difference in the vowel sound of the word, go with the British pronunciation (that demonstrated by Minoo), it is commonly followed here and is easy for us.
Hi, I'm Brazilian and I'm learning a lot with this channel
You should tell about the difference in letter "L" in British and American English - it's the biggest difference that stands out to my untrained ears.
+Вероника Столетняя Thanks for the suggestion!
+Вероника Столетняя L is not a vowl, is it?
you should talk about or you should've mention ... tell is wrong in the sentence
Well L is not a vowel, this video is about vowel sounds.
The problem here is that neither one of them have very strong "American" or "English" accents. Especially the English woman has no hint of dialect in her voice and in fact doesn't even sound like she's speaking the Queen's English. The American woman appears to be speaking with a general American accent.
Nina Luongo I believe they're both teaching the STANDARD English pronunciations for both languages. it won't include dialectic/ regional influences
Nina Luongo of course the american women is speaking general american, because most of the country speaks with general american, of course their is a couple parts a little different, like some of the south speaks 'southern', and some up in Minnesota sound a little more canadian.
Nina Luongo You have no idea what you're talking about.
The US has so many regional dialects and accents that even Americans will generalize the differences. For example, if someone outside of Wisconsin tries to imitate the accent, they might do an accent that more closely resembles North Dakota or northern Minnesota (see the SNL skit taking place in Fond du Lac). Another common thing is to mistake it for a Canadian accent. Canadians are more likely to pronounce 'about' as 'aboot', not a Wisconsinite.
Likewise, northerners have a tendency to lump the southerners into one group and will imitate an accent to cover all the southern states. However, the accent is very different depending on the specific state and even the region within one state.
How can an American accent be strong?
Thanks! EXACTLY what i wanted to hear ... different pronunciation of VOWEL sounds by Brits & Americans. Perfect video👍Loved it!
Omg thank you very much, I have an English exam next week and the most English I know is American, but I have to speak in British there and this helped me a lot!

THANK YOU so much for such an informative video.
"Hi! Since English is not a phonetic language, our alphabet is not a great representation of the pronunciation of words. In fact, we have 5 vowel letters, and well over 10 vowel and diphthong sounds! Here is a sound chart that I created that you may find useful. Then, you can use my ""videos"" tab on my website to watch as many videos on specific sounds as you can!

American English is absolutely easier
It's also incorrect
People are hella salty! Chill out its only an opinion
I'm learning British English in my school but I always use American accent (Also I'm the person who talk most in the class when it comes to English) but other people in my class don't even try to sound like their first language is English. They are using the classic "European R" and when they read word "know" they read the K with it... please kill me...
"Incorrect" you mean simplified? Salty brits.
To me it's confusing more than anything...
3:12 In American-Engliah without the cot-caught merger, coffee is pronounced /ˈkɔfi/
3:26 This varies *hugely* between dialects. Some Americans don't raise /æ/ at all, some Americans (Great Lakes) raise /æ/ all the time.
4:01 The raised /æ/ diphthong is /eə/.
5:11 In my accent and in many Americans' accents the diphthong is /æi/ to distinguish from the long a.
As a New Englander, I have never once raised æ.
cot-caught merger exists only on US west coast
Really great tips, Thank you Rachel
